Milestones
1961 On May 3rd, Gordon Reid, Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, opened his
first store as “Ottawa’s first self-serve discount centre” at 98 George Street in the
Byward Market. The business was launched with a $15,000 investment and first year
sales were $139,781.
1968 Another simple idea was incorporated in the Giant Tiger formula – franchising.
The first franchised store opened in Maniwaki, Quebec.
1971 10th Anniversary! 6 stores in total with a combined annual sales volume of $4,482,284.
1987 Tiger Trucking began operation, with the introduction of Giant Tiger trucks delivering
merchandise from a growing warehouse to 43 Giant Tiger stores.
1990 Giant Tiger established a clothing and footwear buying office in Montreal.
1996 Giant Tiger purchased and took possession of a 270,000 sq ft distribution centre.
Home offices were moved to our new home on Walkley Road in Ottawa. Giant Tiger
opens prototype store adjacent to new Home Office location.
2016 Giant Tiger turned 55!
2018 Giant Tiger opens a state-of-the-art distribution centre in Johnstown, Ontario.
The new facility covers approximately 600,000 sq ft and features the first
Symbotic system in Canada, the latest in shipping and warehousing technology.
2019 Giant Tiger opens its 250th store in Atholville, New Brunswick!
2021 Giant Tiger opens its latest new store in Ottawa, Ontario!

Giant Tiger location in Embrun. The
store is consistently stocked with items, carts
are always available and COVID-19 health
protocols are followed. The staff are always
pleasant, friendly and helpful – and this is all
staff including those on the floor, managing
the change rooms and cashiers – it is an
exceptionally well-managed store! As a client,
this particular store has earned my
loyalty and commitment. Thank you!
A really nice employee named Rose
helped my aunt who almost left with-
out something she paid for; and Rose was so
kind to run to her and make sure she got it. I
know it may seem like something so small but
I thought how amazing of her to do.

Just a quick note to say that Giant
Tiger has the best employees in all of
Steinbach. With everything that’s going on, it’s
so refreshing to shop at a place with courteous
staff that are always helpful (because you
don’t always get that at the competition!).
GT in Steinbach is a great place to shop
– thank you!
I would like to send a compliment to
Kylie H. at the North Bay, Ontario
Lakeshore store. First, she’s very friendly, she
always smiles, and she takes part in conversation
with customers. She has told many customers
(myself included) that she likes our facemasks
if we have special prints on them and genuinely
seems to enjoy what she’s doing! She has a very
positive energy, which is contagious to customers
and even when the store is busy with lineups, she
doesn’t seem stressed.
A lot of these qualities I’ve listed make up for
a much better shopping experience – I think
many people could learn just by watching her
work! Giant Tiger is lucky to have her on their
team, as any store would be! She’s the
real deal!
On November 29, an employee by
the name of Tia at the Giant Tiger in
Anjou (successfully!) helped me find a toy that
I had desperately been searching for. After a
few minutes of small talk, I noticed her bright
smile through her mask and can assure you
that I wasn’t the only one to feel her positivity.
She has an amazing energy! She was telling me
about how much she likes her job and that it’s
always such a respectful and profes-
sional environment. Great job, Tia!
