General Resume Guidelines Layout Format • Unique action verbs at the • Standard font, size 10-12 beginning of each bullet point • Dates on right side • Numbers to quantify results • Demarcation of sections • No personal pronouns • Consistent spacing, styling, and • Only topics you understand wording • STAR method for each bullet • One page only • Clean, reasonable margins, and easy to skim x
Resume Sections 1. Education 3. Skills and Interests What you did, how you did it, Include only content you can result, why it matters; demonstrate or discuss responsibilities and quantified coherently; be yourself (non- results; location generic interests) x

Header & Contact Information 1 2 • Bold your name and make it a larger font so it stands out • Include your Cornell email address, physical address, and phone number • LinkedIn custom URL or personal website are optional x
Education & Relevant Coursework 1 2 • Get rid of high school by sophomore year! You can still include SAT/ACT scores if they are impressively high (next to GPA) • Separate Cornell University and the name of your school from your majors/minors; bold Cornell and italicize majors/minors • It is optional to list your relevant coursework but limit it to one line if you are looking to save space • You can list a TA position under coursework, as its own experience, or in the skills/activities section (bottom of resume) • Always list your GPA! • Include academic honors/scholarships • Make your formatting unique. You can choose to bold GPA and relevant coursework, italicize, or underline x
Professional Experience • Keep your format consistent; locations and company names are usually bolded, while positions and dates are italicized • Each bullet should include what you did, how you did it, and the impact of your work (STAR Method) • Quantify and be as specific as possible • Have 3-4 bullets for each experience in past tense • If you have a position you haven’t started, always put it at the top with the word “incoming” preceding the job title. Include the dates of the job/internship and have at least one bullet either describing the firm or what you will be doing (if you know) x
Leadership & Extracurriculars • Apply the same guidelines for the “Professional Experience” section to your extracurriculars/clubs/teams, etc • Consistent, clear formatting is always important (include dates, locations, positions, etc. and stay consistent throughout) • Start with strong action verbs & try not to repeat verbs • Each bullet should include what you did, how you did it, and the impact of your work (STAR Method) – focus on transferable skills x
Skills & Interests 1 2 • Use the bottom space to list any skills, languages, campus involvements, etc. that are not covered already • Only list a language if you are FLUENT • Give specific, unique interests that might make your application more interesting x
