World Youth Day 2016 Krakow, Poland “Blessed are the merciful: they shall have mercy shown them” (Mt 5:7) Risen Christ Catholic Parish
What is World Youth Day 2016? World Youth Day is a bi-annual youth Celebration that was started by St. John Paul II as a way to inspire the youth and encourage them in living the teachings of Christ. The young people, from many countries and nations around the globe, come together showing the universality of, and diversity within, the Catholic Church. It is a time for the youth to share their faith and be rejuvenated to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ in their homelands. It is also a way to come to understand other cultures and spread peace and under- standing throughout the world. As they wave their countries' and region's flags with pride, the youth unite as one in their walk of faith. During the week leading up to the final mass with Pope Francis, the youth gather in catechesis to learn the teachings of the faith and celebrate in other festivities. The graces flow and the fruits are abundant because it is truly a pilgrimage in which self- sacrifice is an intricate part. Some save and prepare for years to attend. Others sacri- fice by traveling a great distance. What is a pilgrimage? A pilgrimage is a journey a pilgrim makes to a sacred place for the purpose of venerating it or to ask for heavenly aid, and ultimately to come to know God better. Christian pilgrimages were first made to sites connected with the birth, life, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Shortly after, pilgrimages started being made to Rome and other sites associated with the Apostles, Saints and Christian martyrs, as well as places where there had been apparitions of the Virgin Mary. In the past, pil- grims would leave their homes, families, and comforts to walk for hundreds of miles with nothing but what they could carry on their backs. Just as the pilgrims from the ear- ly centuries, we modern pilgrims also leave our homes, families and comforts in order to journey to sacred places. When is World Youth Day 2016? WYD will take place Tuesday, July 26th to Sunday, July 31st, 2016. We have decided to make a pilgrim- age BEFORE the World Youth Day events to differ- ent cities in Poland from Thursday, July 21st to Monday July 26th, 2016. “Blessed are the merciful: they shall have mercy shown them” (Mt 5:7)
Who can attend? We will take pilgrims who are 16 – 25 years old at the time of the pilgrimage. This trip is for teens and college age students. Every pilgrim attending WYD with the Archdio- cese of Denver will be asked to sign a Code of Behavior and complete a Liability and Medical Form. What will I need to bring? You will receive a packing list as we get closer to departure. You will need a Passport to travel to Poland. Passport applications are available at select post offices. A registration reservation requires a completed registration form and a first payment of $300 due to the Parish Office by September 15, 2014. We have set deadlines for all other payments. What is the cost? The cost is $5,000 per pilgrim. Our Experience, Passion and Faithfulness in our Mission to the Youth sets us apart.” Risen Christ has worked with JMJ in the past and has been impressed with their experience of WYDs, their efficient communication, best price, and their strong Catholic identity. Why are we taking a pre-trip pilgrimage to Poland? Poland is filled with incredible history and a beautiful culture. More importantly, the founder of WYD, St. John Paul II, was from Poland. We also will learn about other saints such as St. Maximillian Kolbe and St. Faustina. This is a great opportunity to experience our Catholic faith through the lives of the saints. “Blessed are the merciful: they shall have mercy shown them” (Mt 5:7)
