PET CHIT DOD’S MILITARY-PET FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM Dogs on Deployment’s financial assistance program, currently known as the “Pet Chit Financial Assistance Program” or “PCFAP,” was started to help military and veteran pet owners with pet care emergencies. As military officers, Alisa and Shawn recognized that LEARN MORE AT our junior enlisted often struggle with financial burdens made worst www.bit.ly/dod-petchit when unexpected life challenges arise, one such challenge being pet care. When a homeless veteran reached out to Alisa in 2012 in desperation to save his sick dogs that he did not have the funds for, Alisa knew she had to help. She began fundraising to help care for his dogs and went further by helping the homeless veteran be accepted to a domicile and care facility. The Pet Chit Financial Assistance Program was born. Since then, Alisa has personally granted nearly $800,000 to help military and veteran pet owners. Grants have covered everything from helping sick pets receive medical treatment, to surgery after accidental injury, to long-term chemotherapy assistance, to basic care, such as vaccinations, and spay and neuter. Dogs on Deployment also largely assists active-duty troops bring their dogs with them to their new overseas posts or returning home. Unfortunately, the military does not generally pay for pets to be shipped during a Permanent Change of Station (PCS). The cost burden is placed on the military family, and depending on the length of the trip, time of year, and size of pet, the costs can range from $2,000 – upwards of $10,000 per pet! Dogs on Deployment aims to grant $150,000 in grants in 2021. However, due to a disrupted fundraising year in 2020 based on the effects of the pandemic on corporate and personal giving, Dogs on Deployment does not currently have that budget in place for 2021. We are actively seeking support for our grants program, so we can widely assist the military and veteran pet owners that seek our help. Buster, owned by a US Army family, received a grant to PCS. IN MEMORY RENAMING IN MEMORY OF RICH SETZER Dogs on Deployment’s will be changing the name of the Pet Chit Financial Assistance Program. In December 2020, long- time supporter, volunteer and friend to Dogs on Deployment, Rich Setzer passed away from complications due to contracting COVID-19. Rich poured his heart and soul into this program, and after his passing, we knew we had to do something to honor and memorialize his memory and contributions to Dogs on Deployment. With his family’s blessing, we will be renaming our Pet Chit Financial Assistance to the Rich Setzer Memorial Grant. This small gesture is the least we can do for Rich’s memory. He was a man who was truly dedicated to Dogs on Deployment’s mission, and he is deeply missed by all those that knew him. WORLD SPAY DAY WORLD SPAY DAY TO HONOR RICH Rich’s hard work in helping build the partnership with San Diego Spay & Neuter Action Project, or MIL-SNAP, highlights Rich’s dedication to seeing healthy pets and his work to promote responsible, life-long pet ownership. He knew the importance of spay and neuter in the pet community, and all the benefits associated with ensuring every companion pet is spayed or neutered at an appropriate age. World Spay Day is a national awareness day highlighting the benefits of spaying and neutering your companion pets and giving an opportunity for animal organizations around the world to campaign to get local pets altered for their protection. The day falls on February 23, 2021 this year. Based on Rich’s dedication to this cause, we intend to announce the new program’s name, the Rich Setzer Memorial Grant, on February 23rd, in conjunction with an awareness campaign and goal to get 100 military-owned cats and dogs spayed and neutered. To do this, we must fundraise $15,000 before February 16th specifically to support this initiative. With this funding, we will be able to set up a campaign to honor Rich by announcing our DoD World Spay Day initiative through video and story-telling and approve up to 100 eligible military and veteran pet owners to receive free spay and neuter surgeries across the country. OUR GOAL IS TO RAISE $15,000 TO GET 100 MILITARY AND VETERAN OWNED PETS SPAYED AND NEUTERED DURING WORLD SPAY DAY 2021 IN HONOR OF RICH. CAMPAIGN THE CAMPAIGN PLAN Planning for an initiative this large takes coordination with partners, which are already underway. 1. Partnering with local veterinary offices in high density military markets. We have relationships with many veterinary offices and low-cost spay and neuter clinics across the nation. We are sending out our initiative plans to our partners so that they may advertise the campaign to their military and veteran clients prior to the campaign, so that they may apply early. 2. A strong social media campaign targeting military and veteran pet owners. We have over 20,000 military and veteran pet owners in our network. Using this audience, we will target a look-alike campaign on social media to reach military and veteran pet owners nationwide to apply for free spay and neuter through our program. 3. Local news distribution. By partnering with local veterinary clinics, we will reach out to local news channels with a press releasing announcing our initiative in order to reach local communities. 4. Storytelling. We intend to interview past grant recipients who have had their pets spayed or neutered through the MIL-SNAP partnership to get their perspective on how Dogs on Deployment’s assistance helped them. Pairing this with Rich Setzer’s story of dedication to Dogs on Deployment’s mission, the creation of the MIL-SNAP partnership, and how his legacy will live on through the Rich Setzer Memorial Grant, will create an engaging and heartfelt story to encourage support for the program nationally. 5. Processing applications. The first 100 eligible applications will be processed for approval for up to $150 per pet from the date of announcement of the initiative, approximately February 16, 2021, through March 2, 2021. CEO'S NOTE Thank you for your consideration of supporting Dogs on Deployment, the newly named Rich Setzer Memorial Grant, and the first-ever initiative for DoD World Spay Day. Last year was challenging for all of us, our non-profit included. Through struggling to fundraise through the most challenging moments of the pandemic, the worst outcome of that was the inability to effectively help military families that desperately sought our assistance. We did our best, and considering all the challenges, in 2020, we are proud that we still managed to provide $55,391 to help 56 military and veteran families in need. The hardest part of 2020 was the loss of Rich Setzer. He was more than a volunteer to me. He was a friend and extended family member. We first met because he wanted to make paracord dog collars to help fundraise for Dogs on Deployment in 2014. Immediately feeling a deep connection with him, and living just a few miles from each other, our families became intertwined. The last time I saw Rich, we discussed new projects he wanted to start with Dogs on Deployment, and we dreamed of better days when the pandemic would be over. I never imagined that would be the last time Rich and I would see each other. His memory must live on, and all he did for the military community. This effort to start a nation DoD World Spay Day initiative is just one small way to carry on his legacy through something he helped build single-handily in San Diego. I hope to be able to count on your support, for Rich’s memory, for all the military and veteran families we help, and for all the pets out there. Sincerely, and with gratitude, Alisa Johnson CEO & Co-Founder Dogs on Deployment Rich presented the Volunteer of the Quarter Award by Alisa and Shawn Johnson. Dogs on Deployment | 10
