WORLD AIDS DAY PAGE 3 01 DECEMBER ABOUT THE WORLD AIDS DAY 2019 WORLD AIDS DAY, 1 DECEMBER 2019 1. Background World AIDS Day is commemorated each year on the 1st of December and is an opportunity for every community to unite in the fight against HIV, show support for people living with HIV and remember those who have passed away. 2. International Theme for World AIDS Day 2019 The International Theme for this year’s World AIDS Day 2019 is “Communities make the Difference”. This is an important opportunity to recognize the essential role that communities have played and continue to play in the AIDS response at the international, national and local levels. Communities contribute to the AIDS response in many different ways. Their leadership and advocacy ensure that the response remains relevant and grounded, keeping people at the centre and leaving no one behind. Communities include peer educators, networks of people living with or affected by HIV, such as gay men and other men who have sex with men, people who inject drugs and sex workers, women and young people, counsellors, community health workers, door-to-door service providers, civil society organizations and grass-roots activists. World AIDS Day offers an important platform to highlight the role of communities at a time when reduced funding and a shrinking space for civil society are putting the sustainability of services and advocacy efforts in jeopardy. Greater mobilization of communities is urgently required to address the barriers that stop communities delivering services, including restrictions on registration and an absence of social contracting modalities. The strong advocacy role played by communities is needed more than ever to ensure that AIDS remains on the political agenda, that human rights are respected and that decision-makers and implementers are held accountable.
WORLD AIDS DAY PAGE 4 01 DECEMBER ABOUT THE WORLD AIDS DAY 2019 3. Launch of the UNAIDS Global AIDS Update in South Africa On 16 July 2019 UNAIDS launched its Global Report in South Africa, in part to affirm South Africa’s leadership and continued progress in the Fast-Track targets through community action. UNAIDS was encouraged by news from Eshowe in KwaZuluNatal that, despite high HIV prevalence, the community was already able to reach and surpass the 90-90-90 target set for 2020. Communities play an important role in the national AIDS response and South Africa provides international leadership in this field. The Deputy President and UNAIDS acting Executive Director GunillaCarlsson launched this new report internationally from Eshowe 4. South Africa’s Theme for World AIDS Day 2019 In line with the international theme, South Africa issues a theme that speaks to the prevalent topical issues in response to HIV and AIDS in order to create a unified World AIDS Day campaign that is contextualised. Proposed theme: • Recognizing Community Driven Programmes and Interventions • Resilient Communities for a Strengthened National Response • Nothing About Communities Without Communities • Communities At Work – Reaching the 90/90/90 Targets
WORLD AIDS DAY PAGE 5 01 DECEMBER ABOUT THE WORLD AIDS DAY 2019 5. Approach for the World AIDS Day 2019 Campaign The approach and focus of the 2019 World AIDS Day campaign will be premised on four pillars of the National Strategic Plan on HIV, TB and STIs (NSP) 2017 – 2022. • Pillar 1: NSP Goal 3 The build-up programme as well as the Policy in Action and Cheka Impilo outreach programme on the day will focus on reaching key and vulnerable populations with customised and targeted interventions • Pillar 2: NSP Goal 4 The build-up programme as well as the Policy in Action and Cheka Impilo outreach programme on the day will focus on addressing social and structural drivers of HIV, TB and STIs • Pillar 3: NSP Goal 5 Stigma and Discrimination remains a challenge, and this issues has been highlighted by the focus given to it in the Global Fund, UNAIDS Global Report 2019 as well as the Durban Declaration that was the outcome of the SA AIDS Conference 2019. Efforts being made in other NSP Goals require a line of sight on addressing stigma and discrimination to embed and deepen human rights based approach in the various innovations being implemented in South Africa. • Pillar 4: NSP Goal 6 Re-launch of the North West Provincial Council on AIDS on 1st December as part of promoting leadership and shared accountability for a sustainable response to HIV, TB and STIs at provincial, district and local levels • Pillar 5: NSP Goal 8 Launch of the NSP Mid-Term Review on 1st December, looking at progress, successes, gaps and challenges

WORLD AIDS DAY PAGE 12 01 DECEMBER WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR WORLD AIDS DAY 2019 The South African National AIDS Council encourages organizations to observe the World AIDS Day on 1 December 2019, under the theme, ‘Cheka Impilo - K now your status!’. The hastags will be the following: #ChekaImpilo #KnowYourStatus #WAD 2019 Let’s make this year’s World AIDS Day the biggest ever yet! These tips will help you and your organization to plan and implement events. You know your community best, and you know what messages it most needs to hear. Use the ideas below to tailor your plans to meet your community’s needs. GETTING STARTED Consider these questions and ideas as you decide to plan an event: • How can you raise awareness in your community in a way that reaches those most at risk and affected by HIV and TB? What type of event would interest your target audience? • How can the unique voices in your community add meaning to your plans? How can you incorporate the knowledge, skills, and interests of diverse voices? • Don’t reinvent the wheel. Use the national theme to reinforce common messages. • Research what’s happening. Identify past local events, get advice and learn about new plans. • Reach out beyond traditional partners. Large employers, faith-based or ganizations, schools and others may want to get involved. • Consider how local media can help you reach your target audience.
