Dear colleagues At ELIS, we aim to enhance the professional growth of teachers and teacher leaders of English Language, Literature and English-medium subjects. We offer professional learning opportunities for them to reflect on their own beliefs and practice, learn collaboratively with one another in face-to-face or online sessions, and apply and extend their learning in the classroom. Whether through extended periods of learning experiences or shorter courses, participants can look forward to being supported in building both breadth and depth in their learning through dialogue and self-reflection. In this prospectus, you will find a range of professional learning programmes designed to enhance English Language and Literature teachers’ knowledge bases, develop teacher leadership and build collaborative learning communities to impact student outcomes. Teacher leaders of English Language and Literature can look forward to a range of professional growth programmes, zonal and cluster support for the implementation of the English Language Syllabus 2020 as well as a course aimed at building their research literacy through undertaking classroom-based inquiry. INTRODUCTION The English Language Pedagogy Team supports English Language (EL) and Literature (Lit) teachers and teacher leaders (TLs) through a suite of Professional Learning Programmes (PLPs) designed to: enhance their knowledge of learners of EL and Lit, subject content, pedagogy including assessment, curriculum and the use of ICT to more effectively teach EL and Lit; develop EL and Lit teacher leadership; and build vibrant EL and Lit learning communities. During our PLPs, participants will: engage in collaborative learning and joint practice development to co-construct understanding of the area(s) of learning; build shared understanding of how to systematically apply the learning to impact student outcomes; form learning communities to deepen knowledge, skills and practice in the area(s) of learning; and apply their learning from the Learning Modules in classroom practice. We also offer a range of Lead Teacher-Senior Teacher (LT-ST) Growth Programmes and cluster support for the implementation of the English Language Syllabus 2020 (ELS 2020). For LT-ST Professional Circle and Singapore Writing Institute, we collaborate with participants in Special Interest Groups to co-create a repertoire of ideas, practices and instructional resources. 4

How do I help my students see the value of learning grammar and its application in real- world contexts? What teaching approaches and learner strategies would enable my students to learn to use grammar meaningfully and in context? This learning programme will provide opportunities for you to explore the what and how of teaching grammar. You will also have the opportunity to apply the approaches and processes of teaching grammar in your classroom and enable your students to apply their knowledge of grammar to become discerning readers and empathetic communicators. PROFESSIONAL LEARNING PROGRAMMES (PLPs) TEACHING ORACY (PRIMARY) GROWING INQUIRERS THROUGH DIALOGUE What are ways I can teach my students the use of learner strategies and skills to improve oral communication and classroom interaction? How can I encourage student collaboration and knowledge construction through purposeful exploratory talk? What are the learner strategies in the areas of listening and viewing, speaking and representing, and oral interaction that my students should acquire to be empathetic communicators, discerning listeners and viewers as well as creative inquirers? This learning programme aims to provide you with deeper understanding of the processes of listening and viewing, and speaking and representing. You will be able to apply the knowledge of spoken grammar and vocabulary as well as to teach pronunciation, prosodic features and oral interaction skills more effectively. You will also learn how to use multimodal texts to teach oral communication skills. What do I need to do to plan and teach engaging and effective writing lessons that meet my students’ readiness to learn, interests and learning profiles? This learning programme aims to provide you with deeper understanding of the processes of writing and representing. You will have opportunities to explore, practise and reflect on how to teach writing and representing. Learning Programme Goals By the end of this learning programme, you will be able to: demonstrate knowledge and understanding of writing as a complex cognitive, linguistic and social process; scaffold the learning of writing and representing to meet the students’ readiness to learn, interests and learning profiles; teach writing and representing creatively and critically, exploring word choice and grammar with an awareness of purpose, audience, context and culture, using a range of print, non-print and digital networked learning resources; and use student writing as evidence to ascertain student progress and to inform decisions about teaching, learning and assessment. PROFESSIONAL LEARNING PROGRAMMES (PLPs) TEACHING GRAMMAR (SECONDARY) MEANINGFULLY RIGHT What are my personal beliefs about teaching grammar? How do I help my students acquire the learner strategies they need for them to be confident about their use of grammar for effective communication? Which grammatical items should I focus on when my students make so many grammatical errors? This learning programme will discuss different ways of teaching grammar so that the learning of grammar is meaningful to students. Discussions will connect the theory on the use of grammar in context with practical instructional strategies. Using sample texts, participants will explore how the teaching of grammar will enable students to read effectively and with discernment, and create a wide range of texts for various purposes. Learning Programme Goals By the end of this learning programme, you will be able to: demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles of teaching grammar; apply the principles of teaching grammar to design EL lessons that achieve the intended learning outcomes; in alignment with EL Syllabus 2020, select appropriate teaching approaches and design learning experiences that will enable students to use grammar accurately and appropriately when speaking, writing and representing for various purposes; and formatively assess students’ use of grammar to help them read with discernment and become effective communicators. INTRODUCTION ELIS promotes research into the teaching and learning of EL, Lit and effective communication across the curriculum, with the goal of creating better student learning experiences and outcomes. The ELIS Research Team supports teachers and TLs of EL and Lit who wish to conduct classroom-based inquiry into the teaching, learning and assessment of EL and Lit. Our support takes the form of professional learning which comprises face-to-face sessions and online resources that aim to help teachers and TLs build their capacity as reflective practitioners. 31
COURSE CLASSROOM INQUIRY FOR EL AND LIT TEACHERS How can I turn my curiosity and interest about my students’ learning and my classroom practice into a focused classroom inquiry? How do I design the inquiry to answer the questions I have? How do I review the relevant literature and enhance my understanding of the theory-practice nexus in my classroom practice? What are the ways to collect and analyse evidence? How can I present my findings to others? This course is designed as an introduction to classroom-based inquiry for teachers and TLs of EL and Lit interested in exploring ways of developing their pedagogical practices to improve student learning. Participants will have opportunities to apply their learning by designing and carrying out a classroom-based inquiry either during or after the course. Course Goals By the end of this course, you will have deeper understanding of inquiry in the context of the teaching, learning and assessment of EL and Lit. With such understanding, you will be able to design a classroom- based inquiry, review the relevant literature, collect and analyse evidence to answer your questions, and develop effective ways to communicate your findings.
