Willow Brook Christian Village Among Friends JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2022 Meet Your Neighbor Meet Lynn and Ted Aseltine. They moved to their twin single in June 2020. Prior to moving to Willow Brook, they spent the last 40 years in Westerville where they raised two sons. Ted comes from an academic family; both parents were Sociolo- gy professors. Every summer he and his brother, sister and parents traveled to visit relatives, visit land- marks and attend events like World Fairs. While in high school, Ted attended a summer science insti- tute where he was introduced to computers. He immediately knew that he wanted a career in the emerging computer industry. For the past 53 years Ted has used comput- ers in his career at Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies, Alliance Data Systems and McGraw Hill, as well as using computers at home for assistive technology, record keeping, pho- tography, and home automation. He currently works for McGraw Hill as a Senior Serv- er Engineer, providing the specifications for computers and operating systems that the company uses in datacenters and cloud environments. Lynn grew up in Indiana, and has one sister. Both girls were well schooled in the fiber arts of apparel construction, quilting and crafting. Their mother was a fine seam- stress and grandmother was a superb quilter. In 2019, the Indiana State Historical Mu- seum accepted two hexagon quilts made by Lynn's grandmother, and a third quilt was accepted by the Smithsonian Institute because of its unusual design and fine craftsman- ship. Lynn expresses her own creativity, craftiness and artistic abilities in multiple me- dia, including watercolor painting, sewing, and quilling and other paper arts. Ted and Lynn met at Indiana University in 1972, where Ted earned his masters de- gree in Computer Science and Lynn graduated from the School of Nursing. They were active in the Westerville Christian Church, both having major responsibilities in the an- nual "Night In Bethlehem" event each December. Lynn & Ted consider it a blessing to be part of the Willow Brook community and look forward to meeting more members of the community in the months ahead. The neighbors you meet in retirement will become your friends for life.
Page 2 A word from the CEO… Happy New Year! The slate is wiped clean, so let’s write a happy story for 2022. I’ll start by reflecting on some mighty happy stories from 2021. First, let me humbly thank you for your outpouring of love for the Wil- low Brook team with the resident-funded Staff Christmas Gift Fund. You and your fellow residents from all three Willow Brooks, along with many family members, gave an eye-popping $236,000! Willow Brook chipped in $50,000 to cover those wretched “payroll” taxes so your gifts would go to staff members and not Uncle Sam. It all divvied up to $860 apiece for all full- and part-time staffers. Let me tell you, when we announced this De- cember 10th at their virtual Christmas party, you put hundreds of smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes. In all, 589 individuals and couples gave gifts ranging from $25 to $10,000. You amaze me! I hope you are hearing many thank-yous from grateful Willow Brookers. And more good news. We announced in the staff Christmas party video the winners of the 2021 Second Mile Award. They are: Darshawn Eiland, nursing assistant from The Home Scott Folchert, bus driver/maintenance worker from The Village Kathleen Barnhart, transitional living aide from Delaware Run Every year at Christmastime we select one staff member from each campus whose service is deemed exceptional and beyond the ordinary. These three join an elite group whose names are en- graved on a plaque in the lobby at each campus. Be sure to offer a word of congratulations when you come across these three givers. As always, I want you to know that I consider it a high honor to serve you in my capacity as CEO of this precious ministry. I offer you my best wishes for a New Year full of wondrous things. Much love to all, Larry Harris News and Happenings PLEASE REMEMBER the posted speed limit in the Village is 20 miles per hour. Your cooper- ation in observing this is much appreciated. Due to Martin Luther King Day on January 17, trash collection for the twin-singles will be made Tuesday through Saturday of that week. Trash collection for the Garden Homes and Vil- lage Commons will be on Thursday as usual.
Page 3 The 2022 holiday refuse/recycling schedule for the City of Delaware is attached. Please note that this schedule pertains to only those living in the twin-singles. The front offices and the Courtyard restaurant will be closed on Monday, January 17, in ob- servance of Martin Luther King Day. If your supplemental insurance carrier changed at the first of the year, please bring your new card to the desk so we can copy and upload it to your records. Presidents’ Day is Monday, February 21. Most government offices will be closed, and there will be no mail delivery. However, the City of Delaware will operate on its regularly scheduled trash pickup for that week. Please call the front office at 740-369-0048 if you have any questions. SNOW REMOVAL for the entire Village this winter will be on a priority basis. However, if you have an appointment or need to get to work, please let us know, and your driveway will be put at the top of the list. If you will be leaving your home for a few months or weeks this winter, please stop by the front desk and fill out a form prior to your departure. This will help our maintenance team take proper care of your home during the cold months. If you live in a twin-single home, please do not attempt to venture out during dangerous weath- er (extreme cold, ice, etc.) to retrieve your mail. You may call the front desk and request that a member of the maintenance team assist you. Please be prepared for unexpected severe weather. We strongly suggest that you purchase flashlights and transistor/weather radios that run on batteries to keep on hand in your home. Willow Brook Christian Communities is a member of LeadingAge Ohio, an organization that ad- vocates for nonprofit services for older Ohioans. During the month of February, this organiza- tion will be conducting a search for exceptional non-supervisory staff members to recognize at the an- nual “Stars” Luncheon to be held in May. Watch for more information and nomination forms in the weeks to come. Beginning in February an AARP TAX-AIDE COORDINATOR and several IRS-trained coun- selors will help prepare income tax returns for individuals who need assistance. SourcePoint will begin scheduling appointments beginning in January and are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. To make an appointment, please call the tax hotline at 740-203-2423 and leave your name and phone number (including area code). Your call will be returned within 48 hours.

Page 6 From your Executive Director A sincere thank you for the generous donations to the 2021 resident-funded Staff Christmas Gift Fund. A total of 589 residents and family members from all three campuses gave an amazing $236,003! This exceeds last year’s record of $203,000. Willow Brook also contributed an additional $50,000 to help cover wage taxes, so it wouldn’t have to come out of your donations. Each eligible staff member (full time and part-time staff members) received a gift of $860!! Everyone was so thankful and surprised! As you may know, Chaplain Dana has retired. You may still see him around as he has agreed to volunteer and still lead some programs. He has given much to our Willow Brook ministry, and always with a good heart. We are hoping to have his replace- ment onboard sometime after the first of the year. Happy New Year, Nicole
