Water Aerobics Exercise Classes (Aquacise) It’s not just for old ladies!! Seriously! If you like being in the water but get bored swimming up and down the lanes, or just want to vary your routine, consider pool exercise classes. Water exercise can be safer and more comfortable for pregnant women or for those who are overweight, recovering from surgery, or suffer from arthritis, back pain or muscle or joint problems. Since your weight is partially supported and your movements slowed down, you are much less likely to injure yourself. All classes are one hour long unless noted. Bring a bottle of water poolside to keep your body hydrated. New participants and questions are welcome. Ages 12-15 are welcome to join classes but need an adult in class as well. Classes are drop in, so come any time! Tips for Water Exercisers • A doctor’s guidance is advised before you start an exercise program. • Before your first class, let your instructor know about any special conditions that might affect your workout. • Keep yourself hydrated before, during and after your workout by drinking plenty of water. • For maximum, resistance the water depth should be about chest height. • Wearing water shoes can improve your footing and protect your feet in shallow water. • Touching your heel to the floor each time your foot lands promotes correct form. • Use the “Talk Test” to determine your exertion level. You should be able to talk with another person during your workout. If you can’t, then you are working too hard and should slow down. Winter Outdoor Recreation Ice Rinks: The Parks Department works hard to provide you the best outdoor winter recreation possible when weather permits. In the past we have been able to provide a standard rectangle ice rink at Old Settlers Park (the green space by the Aquatic and Fitness Center Parking Lot) and a figure 8 skating rink at the Streets Garage Sled Hill. Ice Rinks take many cold days and nights and it must be below 32 degrees morning, day and night for the ice to set properly. Water needs to be frozen in multiple layers over several days. So as excited as we are to see you out there using it, we do ask that you have patience in the process to make good solid ice. Do not go on the ice until we have officially opened the rinks. You will see an announcement on our Facebook page, our website and it will be posted on our digital sign outside of the Municipal Building across from Festival Foods. Sled Hill: A muncipal sled hill is located across from the boat launch (at the Parks and Streets Garage) on Wolf River Avenue. This sled hill has a warming shelter. There are times when there are bare spots or unfavorable conditions so we do close it due to these reasons. Please watch our Facebook page, our website and it will be posted on our digital sign outside of the Municipal Building across from Festival Foods. Cross Country Trails: The Parks Department has the equipment to develop Cross Country trails, but there are many factors that contribute to that, including man power and perfect weather conditions. We hope to provide the service for you, and like the sled hill and the ice rinks we post those as open when we are able to. These trails are located behind the Floral Hill Cemetary and in Hatten Park. More Winter Info. from the Street/Parks Dept. Winter Parking There is no on-street parking from November 1 - March 31 between the hours of 3am and 6am. Shoveling: You are responsible for shoveling the walk in front of your property in the winter and removing accumulated ice. If you have a corner lot with sidewalk, you need to shovel out the curb ramp going to the street. State law requires that the City do these things, if you do not. Charges for such services are billed to you and placed on your property taxes, if unpaid. It is cheaper for you to hire this work done than to ignore it and wait for a complaint to be made and the City to follow through. The Department of Public Works has a list of persons you may call to hire this work done. Municipal Ordinance 8.06 (3) SNOW NOT TO BE DEPOSITED IN STREETS. No person shall deposit or cause to be deposited any snow or ice taken and removed from his premises or elsewhere upon any sidewalk, alley, parkway, public place or street in the City. This does not apply to sidewalk removal on North Water and Pearl Streets in the downtown business area. Sump Pumps: Please make sure that you discharge your sump pump hoses away from the street and sidewalks in order to prevent slippery street and sidewalk conditions. They should discharge onto the side or back of your house if possible. If you have any questions regarding proper placement, call the Public Works Department at 982-8516.
