Closing date for entries: Friday 19th March 2020 WELCOME The 97th Festival of Music, Speech & Drama will take place from Monday 1st June to Friday 5th June 2020 The syllabus offers a wide range of classes for amateurs of all ages to perform competitively or non-competitively. It allows entrants to gain experience in a friendly environment, and to feel a sense of achievement. It also provides an opportunity to hear splendid performances, which in turn can be stimulating and in keeping with our motto - "Not to gain a prize or defeat a rival, but to pace one another on the r oad to excellence". All participants receive written comments from an expert adjudicator. From the more advanced classes, performers will be selected by the adjudicators to take part in the Vocal and Instrumental Challenge Recital in Mannofield Church on Friday 5th June. Our thanks to Kawai for their continued and much appreciated sponsorship of the Festival, and to the dedicated team of volunteers without whom the Festival could not function. We hope you will come along to support those taking part in classes throughout the week. No one wants to perform to an empty hall! The participants enjoy the benefits of performing to a live audience, and the audience will be in the presence of potential stars of the future. June Maclean, President Volunteering The charity depends on volunteers for its smooth running and success. If you would like to help out, if you have a little time, or a bit more, but not quite sure what you might do, please get in touch: email info@nespa.scot. There is a job for everyone. During festival week itself, much help is needed, most importantly stewards for 3 hour sessions, morning, afternoon and evening: 1. Cash stewards to man the entrance to the venues 2. Board stewards to help prepare the performers for each class 3. Adjudicators’ stewards to help organise the copies and paperwork If you are interested in becoming a steward, please email Anne stewards@nespa.scot

Closing date for entries: Friday 19th March 2020 INTRODUCTION TO THE 2020 SYLLABUS The festival enjoyed another successful year in 2019, with entries up by 10 per cent on the previous year, requiring more than 2 extra days adjudication time. Performers of all standards and ability took part, and the Festival Finale was a terrific display of talent. Aberdeen continues to be one of the three biggest competitive festivals in Scotland, and one of the oldest in the country. Particular successes in 2019, which we hope to build on in 2020, are: ▪ the Adult classes ▪ the split of Light Music classes between pre- and post- 1979. ▪ the Light Music final ▪ the introduction of graded classes. Based on feedback from performers and teachers, there are some tweaks to pricing and time limits this year, a bit of reorganisation within the syllabus, and the following fresh ideas have been introduced: ▪ revised reckonable date for age: 1 st June 2020, not end of February ▪ a Concerto Class ▪ repertoire classes in Strings and Winds have been renamed Recital classes ▪ the switch to non-competitive for Composition with opportunity for discussion ▪ the string beginners class, sponsored by ABRSM ▪ Jazz classes in the Woodwind Section ▪ the split in the solo Vocal Open classes between under & over age 18 ▪ the extension of the Guitar Classes to include any fretted instrument ▪ the new “Tell a Joke Class” in Speech & Drama ▪ the option to include a Voice in certain chamber classes ▪ the Light Music Chorus and A Capella Choir classes moved to V17X and V18X And finally, free entry to the renamed Music for Groups – if you can’t find a class elsewhere that suits you, your instrument or your ensemble, this section might be for you. The Local Interest class failed to attract any interest last year, and we are hoping that, particularly in the light of the Abzolutely Aberdeen initiative, this might attract some interest in 2020. This class is free to enter. Our generous sponsors have introduced a new trophy for Kawai Pianist of the Year, and prizes are being provided by Chapter & Verse (formerly Top Note) and ABRSM in the String Section. Although primarily a competitive festival, performers are reminded that they are welcome to take part in any class on a non-competitive basis. Teresa Boag, Chair Janette Hall, Festival Director 1
