FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear Colleagues, Fall classes went by quickly and soon it will be time to register for the winter session. If you are new to the OLLI at ISU program, the winter session is only four weeks in length and classes are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. It is a short session, but filled with several great learning opportunities. Regarding the weather, I’m thinking positively that we will have nicer weather than last year. Some favorites from last year are being repeated: Understanding Global Climate Change, Streamliners on the Overland Route (expanded to four weeks), Railroads in Story County (expanded to four weeks), Privacy When Using the Internet, and Home Computer Security. Current Issues in Public K-12 Education has been a very popular class and will continue during the winter session. There are several new classes: What’s in the Water, Learning to Play the Native American Flute (each person gets their own flute), Eugenics, Making It Right – Downsizing for Seniors, and three one-day presentations by Ron Palumbo, just to name a few. This program could not be possible without the instructors and the OLLI members who serve on the committees to make the winter session possible. If you would like to help by being a class assistant or a first-day greeter, please let me know. I hope you find several classes that will fit into your schedule. I’ll see you at the Winter 2020 open house on Thursday, Dec. 12 from 1:30 – 2:30 PM. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS TUESDAY #1 – Privacy When Using the Internet Tuesday 9:00 – 10:30 AM One day, Jan. 14 Cost: $16 Horton Multipurpose Conference Room - ISU Alumni Center Class limit 25 Twenty-nine years ago, Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web. Quoting Berners-Lee a year ago, “selling private citizens’ browsing data is disgusting.” We have become the product and not the customer. We are being stalked. There are dossiers on each of us—name, contact information, spending habits, income level, mortgages, and a whole lot more. This class will help you regain some privacy and anonymity when using the internet. Sam Wormley is a retired associate scientist and principal investigator, CNDE/IPRT/ AL at Iowa State and taught as an adjunct professor of astronomy at Marshalltown Community College for 17 years. Wormley regularly teaches science and technology classes for OLLI at Iowa State. #2 – Current Issues in Public K-12 Education Tuesday 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM Four weeks, Jan. 14 – Feb. 4 Cost: $44 Horton Multipurpose Conference Room - ISU Alumni Center Class limit 25 This course is designed to examine current issues and concerns in education that could affect teaching, student learning, curriculum, families, students, teachers, administration, school policy, and school law. We will look at the many complex issues and challenges that schools face each day. Topics to be covered will be determined by unfolding events and class desires. Chuck Achter has been a public school educator for 50 years. Achter spent six years as a social studies teacher and coach; 32 years as a high school principal in Chaska, Minn., Ames, and Coon Rapids, Minn.; and 10 years as an ISU professor where he taught foundations of American education, educational methods, and school and community. Achter spent the last two years consulting on school culture. 12 O L L I W I N T E R C ATA L O G 2 0 2 0
#3 – Functions of the Brain Tuesday 1:00 – 2:30 PM Four weeks, Jan. 14 – Feb. 4 Cost: $44 Horton Multipurpose Conference Room - ISU Alumni Center Class limit 28 Many of the functions that a person performs, ranging from turning the knob on a door to playing a hand of bridge, are orchestrated by the brain. The purpose of this course is to explore the materials and the machinery that the brain uses to perform these functions. We will talk about how the brain works and how malfunctions can lead to diseases of the brain. We will use video clips of experts discussing these functions, and we will discuss background information to help the student under- stand what the experts are saying. Sources will include Antonio Damasio’s book “Self Comes to Mind” as a source for the basic models, and video clips from many sources including the Charlie Rose Brain Series. The diseases to be discussed are autism, Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease as well as a discussion about the healthy brain. Douglas Finnemore is a distinguished professor emeritus in the ISU Department of Physics and Astronomy with research experience in the physics of materials. Finnemore has facilitated the Great Decisions course many times and has previously taught courses related to diseases of the brain. #4 – What’s in the Water? Tuesday 3:00 – 4:30 PM Four weeks, Jan. 14 – Feb. 4 Cost: $44 Horton Multipurpose Conference Room - ISU Alumni Center Class limit 28 How’s the water quality in my local river, lake, or aquifer? This course will provide you with the tools and the context to find out. Each session will include examples and step-by-step exercises to help you find and interpret information on an Iowa water body of your choice, using publicly available websites and apps. We will also discuss Prairie Rivers of Iowa’s conservation efforts in the Squaw Creek and South Skunk River watersheds. Dan Haug is the watershed educator with Prairie Rivers of Iowa, an Ames-based nonprofit that promotes economic development through the restoration and conservation of Iowa’s cultural and natural resources. Haug has an M.S. in water resources management from the University of Wisconsin. O L L I W I N T E R C ATA L O G 2 0 2 0 13
WEDNESDAY #5 – Understanding Global Climate Change Wednesday 9:00 – 10:30 AM Four weeks, Jan. 15 – Feb. 5 Cost: $44 Horton Multipurpose Conference Room - ISU Alumni Center Class limit 25 Understanding global climate change provides an overview of what climatologists have learned about our changing climate. We avoid the political rhetoric and look at what the science says. The goal is for each of us to better understand what is happening to climate, why, and how we will live with the changes. #6 – The “Big Five” Personality Traits - What are They? Wednesday 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM One day, Jan. 15 Cost: $16 Horton Multipurpose Conference Room - ISU Alumni Center Class limit 25 The “Big Five” refers to the five-factor model of personality. Today most psycholo- gists agree that personality can be described usefully in terms of five broad traits: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. This presentation offers an overview of the roots of trait theory, a brief history of the development of the “Big Five” model, and definitions and examples of each of these five traits. Ron Palumbo is a retired teacher and social worker. Palumbo has taught many OLLI courses, including, “Introvert or Extrovert - What’s the difference?” 14 O L L I W I N T E R C ATA L O G 2 0 2 0
#7 – Sociopath or Psychopath - What’s the Difference? Wednesday 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM One day, Jan. 22 Cost: $16 Horton Multipurpose Conference Room - ISU Alumni Center Class limit 25 Thanks to crime novels and thrillers, both “sociopath” and “psychopath” have become familiar terms in popular culture. Yet their meanings remain vague and neither term is part of medical or psychiatric terminology. This presentation offers a brief history of these concepts, the difference between them and their relationship to the mental health diagnosis of Antisocial Personality Disorder (APD), and an introduction to the psychological research into psychopathy. Ron Palumbo is a retired teacher and social worker. Palumbo has taught many OLLI courses, including “Introvert or Extrovert - What’s the difference?” #8 – Understanding Stockholm Syndrome Wednesday 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM One day, Jan. 29 Cost: $16 Horton Multipurpose Conference Room - ISU Alumni Center Class limit 25 “Stockholm Syndrome” is a psychological response to a situation in which an individual feels intense fear of physical harm and believes that all control is in the hands of their tormentor. This response is a survival strategy most likely to develop while being held hostage. This presentation offers an explanation of the origins of the term, examples of three famous cases, and an introduction to the inverse of this paradoxical disorder, Lima Syndrome. Ron Palumbo is a retired teacher and social worker. Palumbo has taught many OLLI courses, including “Introvert or Extrovert - What’s the difference?” O L L I W I N T E R C ATA L O G 2 0 2 0 15
#9 – Making it “Right” - Downsizing for Seniors Wednesday 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM One day, Feb. 5 Cost: $16 Horton Multipurpose Conference Room - ISU Alumni Center Class limit 28 Let’s take a look at a lifetime’s worth of belongings and memories and why it can be challenging and overwhelming to make decisions about letting “stuff” go. Whether downsizing by choice or circumstance, we will discuss the difficulties and the opportunities that traveling lighter provides. We will share different philosophies and strategies seniors might employ as they deal with “stuff” as well as tips, tricks, and encouragement for getting started or continuing. Tisa Johnson has owned Senior Transitioning Services of Central Iowa since 2015. A former social worker, she recognizes the many factors involved in making a later-life move. Johnson and her team make transitions smooth by handling logistics such as the packing, unpacking, and setup of a new space, emptying a previous home, and innumerable other details. #10 – Eugenics Wednesday 1:00 – 2:30 PM Four weeks, Jan. 15 – Feb. 5 Cost: $44 Horton Multipurpose Conference Room - ISU Alumni Center Class limit 28 Eugenics is the science of improving the human population using genetic principles. First advocated by Sir Francis Galton in the late 1800s, it aimed to accomplish this goal by increasing favorable traits and eliminating unfavorable ones. It was highly influential in the first decades of the 20th century, influencing public policies, such as forced sterilization and immigration law, in the United States and elsewhere, particularly Nazi Germany. Barbara Pleasants is a long-time resident of Ames and recently retired from Iowa State, where she taught courses in biology and the Holocaust. Her interest in eugenics stems from its relevance to both of these subjects. Pleasants taught an OLLI class on the Holocaust in the spring of 2019. 16 O L L I W I N T E R C ATA L O G 2 0 2 0
#11 – Microelectronic and Evolving Artificial Intelligence Wednesday 3:00 – 4:30 PM Four weeks, Jan. 15 – Feb. 5 Cost: $44 Horton Multipurpose Conference Room - ISU Alumni Center Class limit 28 Recent events such as IBM’s “Watson” and “Blue Gene” or Google’s AlphaGo competitions, where machines have outperformed human experts, have resulted in considerable publicity about what has been termed “artificial intelligence.” The diminishing cost and increased complexity of microelectronics will continue to provide expanding applications of this nature. To put the notion of artificial intelligence in perspective, the manner in which brain cells store information and make decisions will be reviewed, and simple examples of how electronic circuits can mimic these functions will be examined in non-technical language. Art Pohm retired in 1991 after 32 years on the faculty in the ISU Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. Pohm is a Fellow of the IEEE and an emeritus distinguished professor of engineering. After retiring, he worked for a start-up company (NVE) for several years. Pohm has had a continuing interest in energy problems and has made an effort to keep abreast of important developments. #12 – Learning to Play the Native American Flute Wednesday 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM Four weeks, Jan. 15 – Feb. 5 Cost: $95 Green Hills Community Room Class limit 10 Have you ever heard the haunting sound of the Native American Flute (NAF) and wished you could play one? Well, now you can. No musical knowledge is required. If you can blow through a straw and tap your fingers on the table, you can learn to play the NAF. Each participant will receive a Jon Norris NAF in the key of G. Join us as we progress from playing our first notes to playing duets. Practice is required. Mary Lou Nosco is a retired Army officer and educator. She has a B.A. in history, and an Ed.D. in educational leadership. THURSDAY #13 – Steamliners on the Overland Route Thursday 9:00 – 10:30 AM Four weeks, Jan. 16 – Feb. 6 Cost: $44 Horton Multipurpose Conference Room - ISU Alumni Center Class limit 28 Circumstances converged in the 1930s to create a new era of American rail passenger service. The economic impact of the automobile and the Great Depression demanded a fresh start to attract passengers back to the rails. What manifested was the streamliner, an aerodynamically shaped, ultra-modern train that galvanized the public’s attention and inspired ridership. Union Pacific’s 1934 futuristic streamlined train spurred a design movement that developed into a fleet of renowned passenger trains on the legendary Overland Route. Ames native Stewart Buck is recognized as one of the nation’s foremost railroad artists and is a noted railroad historian. Buck taught high school art classes for 36 years and now devotes full time to his freelance art business Streamliner Studio. Others referred to it as “The American Scene.” The big three are Thomas Hart Benton, John Steuart Curry, and Grant Wood. Several works from each of these artists will be viewed and discussed. Audience members will be given opportunity to respond to each painting displayed. Phyllis Schrag is a retired educator, and an actor, singer, quilter, gardener, and reader.
