LAKE RIDGE ACADEMY 2020 SUMMER PROGRAMS / JUNE 8 – JULY 17 A diverse and dynamic program offering full and half day experiences open to all area students! Come join us to explore, experience, create, think and have fun! Program Length We offer six weeks of summer program options from June 8 – INSIDE July 17, 2020. Camps and classes are offered in one to five 2020 Summer Program Details 2–3 week blocks. Discovery Camps (Full & Half Day, K* – 4th) 4 Daily Schedule Fine Arts & Technology Camps 5–7 The day includes half (9:00 am – 12:00 pm, 1:00 pm – 4:00 Chess Camp (USA Chess) 7 pm) and full day (9:00 am – 4:00 pm) sessions, before and Environmental & Experiential Camps 8–9 after-school care, and a supervised lunch. Online Registration Process We are excited to offer online registration for our Summer Program. Please note some vendor programs require online registration on their organization’s website (check course description). 1. V isit www.lakeridgeacademy.org/summer to access the online registration link. You will also be able to access links to our vendor camps. 2. View the course offerings and make your selections. 3. You will be asked to set up an account with our provider, Active Network. 4. Complete the Medical Authorization, Photo Authorization, and Waivers. 5. Pay by credit card or echeck. 6. Y ou will receive an automated email that your registration has been received. Any additional information will be emailed prior to the start of the course. Tuition and Cancellation/Withdrawal Class Size All tuition payments are made online during registration. DISCOVERY CAMPS K*–4TH Discovery Camps are multi-disciplinary day camps designed to provide children with an enriching, and rewarding learning experience in an environment of summer fun. Campers will encounter a variety of hands- on learning experiences each week, and they will try new things, visit new places, and meet new people all under the guidance of experienced, caring, Lake Ridge Academy faculty and staff. Discovery Camps are led by Ms. Regan Pore, Mrs. Rachel Reighley, Mrs. Kristy Rodriguez, Ms. Lauren Thome, and other Lake Ridge Academy faculty. Teachers are assisted by camp counselors, consisting of both Upper School and college students. Week One: June 8-12 All For One and One For All! Gather your suit of armor and prepare for a tournament of knights! Laugh and joke at the Jester’s court, create a wizard wand, and craft a coat of arms. Live your favorite fairytale and end the week with a Masquerade and Renaissance Faire, Discovery Camp style! Week Two: June 15-19 Under the Sea Put on your swimsuit, goggles, and don’t forget your imagination! We are headed below deck to explore life under the sea! We will look at the water cycle, water transportation, animals and their aquatic habitats, and see if we can reach the ocean floor by the end of the week. Come join us as we understand the importance of water to people and animals alike. Week Three: June 22-26 … And the Winner Is Take your place on the podium for an Olympic week of winning! Get ready for a week of games and a look at this ancient tradition of honoring athletes and sport from around the world! Week Six: July 13-17 Curtain Up! Students will dance, KAPOW! WHAM! POW! Calling all Superheroes – grab your sing, perform in group theater games, and explore theatrical capes, masks, and your sidekick. FINE ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY CAMPS Oberlin Choristers’ World of Music Camp 2020: A Nordic Adventure! Come with us into the mystical Nordic lands of Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, and Norway. In this week-long day camp for singers in grades 3-8, we will explore the music and cultures of Northern Europe through song, dance, instruments, and even a smorgasbord! This fun and interactive week will conclude with a finale concert to showcase the highlights of the week. Activities include choral music and singing games, instrumental music and dancing, fun and games outdoors, art and culture, food inspired by Nordic cuisine and time spent building friendships! We will also be exploring 2 dimensional techniques including painting on canvas, collage, and drawing in their sketchbooks. Fiber art will also be explored with tie dye t-shirts, and the choice to create a tote bag or pillow! Students will have fun creating pieces that they can display and use every day! Students will begin with a generic EV3 robot and learn to program it to move using the Mindstorms software, which is GUI based programming. During the week they will have the opportunity to build accessories on their robot to accomplish tasks and challenges on a custom game board. The final day will host an official competition where a winning team will be determined. Creating in 3 Dimensions Have you ever had an idea that you wished you could bring to life? Ever drawn a sketch and thought how cool it would be to have your design created in 3 dimensions? Are you interested in the world of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and 3D printing? Consider joining this class where you will utilize Sketchup to create objects in virtual space and then see them printed on one of Lake Ridge Academy’s 3D printers. Examples have included airfoil test sections, various chess pieces, and even the ancient Greek Temple of Venus. Nature Photography Enjoy a summer’s week on our beautiful campus, Sandy Ridge, and Indian Hollow capturing the essence of nature through a lens. ACADEMIC Providing in-field, hands-on instruction in digital camera use, composition and elements of design along with the fundamentals of digital darkroom, this course is an introduction to the art of CAMPS nature and photography. Campers will look at a range of films that cover broad topics of American history and will examine the accuracy of these films and why sometimes Hollywood changes the details to make a better story. ATHLETIC CAMPS Tennis Camp Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned player, the LRA Tennis camp is the place to learn basic skills and strategy all while having fun learning a game that can be played your whole life. LRA coaches will lead athletes through all strokes and give individualized instruction throughout each session. Classes are held Monday- Thursday. This is a six-week camp.
