2021 Virtual Conference - Kentucky Public Library Association A Common Ground A Common Good: Reboot
Message from the Conference Planning
Committee Chair

                        to the Kentucky Public Library
Association’s first virtual conference – A Common Good, A
Common Ground: Reboot. Our Conference Planning
Committee is so proud to bring this innovative, affordable,
and socially distant professional development experience
to our public library community.

As you plan the sessions you’ll attend, the colleagues you’ll network with, and the ways you
will engage in the virtual conference experience, we would like to give a deeply felt
recognition to 2020-21 KPLA Chair Jessica Powell and the 2020 Conference Planning
Committee. So much of what we present to you at KPLA 2021 Virtual is borne out of the
hard work that Jessica and last year’s committee devoted to planning a conference that
unfortunately had to be cancelled in the last days leading up to the outbreak of COVID-19.
Thus, we borrowed last year’s conference theme and simply, as you can guess, rebooted it!

The last year has presented many challenges, but if we look close enough, we can surely see
some incredible triumphs. Adapting programs, pivoting to curbside, and going virtual in
every sense of the term, Kentucky’s public libraries have risen to the occasion. We have
much to celebrate and we hope this conference serves as such a reminder.

Until we can see you in-person next year, the Conference Planning Committee and I wish you
a fantastic KPLA 2021 Virtual!

Lindsey B. Westerfield

Led by Kentucky Department of Libraries & Archives

Having a fully trained, well qualified board of trustees is a goal to which every Kentucky public
library should aspire! The KPLA 2021 Virtual Conference is excited once again to offer a pre-
conference just for trustees in which they will complete the Kentucky Public Library Trustee
Certification Program. Led by the professionals at the Kentucky Department of Libraries &
Archives, this one-day event covers training on trustee and director roles, conducting a library
board meeting, fiscal responsibility, strategic planning and library advocacy, and governance.
Attending this training will allow trustees to complete all five classes needed for certification in a
                   single day.

Library Administration Pandemics and Personnel Policies: How to Make Policy for the Next Pandemic
Contemporary Issues Louis Kelly, Commonwealth Attorney, 54th Circuit, Office of the Commonwealth Attorney

Many library directors and managers struggled with understanding how to make policies for their
staff during the COVID-19 epidemic. Guidance from government agencies could be confusing,
conflicting, or contradictory to previous guidance that many employers (and employees) had
come to rely upon. Louis Kelly will help give you some ideas on making permanent policies that
will help guide you and your staff during the next pandemic...which we all hope never comes.

                         Experience
Colin Drake, Principal Architect, JRA Architects

Borne of all that 2020 did to disrupt life, libraries remained leaders in finding creative ways to
connect with their communities. Learn how our team was inspired to see the potential of your
properties playing a part, even while the buildings remained closed. By capitalizing on fields,
overgrown side yards, and even parking lots, we've created temporary mazes that engage
patrons of every age and found ways to imbue the process with creativity and purpose.

Library Administration Documenting Library Work: Lessons We Can Learn From Technical Writers
Emily Nimsakont, Cataloging and Metadata Trainer, Amigos Library Services

Have you ever tried to write a how-to manual or other documentation for your library? Have you
gotten overwhelmed trying to figure out where to start, or too busy keeping up with your day-to-
day work to take a step back and document it? Most of us know that documentation is important
to continuity of processes in library work, but it’s an easy thing to write off as too hard, or to set
aside for later. Lessons from the field of technical writing can help prioritize these important
                         tasks.

Collections Collection Deselection: Creating a Sustainable and Responsive Plan for your Library
Kinzie Gaunce, Library Director, Cynthiana-Harrison County Public Library

Deselection can be the biggest hurdle in creating a fresh useful collection. This session will help
you learn how to weed your collection effectively and involve your co-workers in the process. We
will discuss creating an easy-to-understand Deselection Policy, training your staff, and the
importance of discarding discretely and sustainably. Learn the pitfalls of an outdated weeding
plan and the importance of creating one specific to your library that can evolve with your
                         community.

Community Engagement Connecting with Older Adults
Phyllis Goodman, Retired Adult Services Librarian and Author,
The pandemic of 2020 has hit every age group but the hardest hit has been the older adult
population. As libraries reopen many in this age group are worried about going to public places or
may not able to visit due to physical and cognitive issues. Many living in senior facilities are not
visited by their local library. This session is geared to public librarians who work with older adults
and provide outreach programming. The session includes an overview of who the older adult
population is, will talk about connecting with older adults during programs, will share
programming ideas that have been presented in senior centers and facilitie, and willl share what
some libraries are doing for senior outreach during the pandemic.

Peter Keung, Managing Director & Co-Founder, Mugo Web

The Oldham County Public Library wanted to improve its website to better reflect its expanding
events programming and physical facilities. OCPL chose Mugo Web as its development partner,
and its new site went live in November 2020 – on time, on budget, and to a welcome reception
by the library’s board, staff and patrons. This session will detail the process of budgeting,
planning and executing the successful launch.

Youth Services Resources to Support Social & Emotional Learning in K12
Enid Wohlstein, Senior Fellow, Kentucky Virtual Library
Judi Vanderhaar, Program Consultant, Kentucky Department of Education

Public and school librarians have partnered for years to support our K12 students in their learning
and leisure pursuits. Understanding social and emotional capacities and learning can enhance
these partnerships. Our session will cover resources available from the Kentucky Department for
Education and the Kentucky Virtual Library for gaining an understanding of how we can
incorporate SEL into the educational experiences of K-12 students.

Library Administration Reserve Funds: From Boredom to Excitement!
Mark Adler, Library Director, Paris-Bourbon County Library
Lisa Rice, Library Director, Warren County Public Library
Chris Bischoff, Library Regional Consultant, KDLA
Chip Sutherland, Managing Director Public Finance, Baird

Public libraries have a responsibility for appropriately generating revenue and managing public
funds. Join Chris Bischoff (KDLA), Lisa Rice (Warren County Public Library), Chip Sutherland
(Baird), and Mark Adler (Paris-Bourbon County Library) for a riveting discussion about one
methodology for setting up reserve funds that are transparent and just plain make sense.

Community Engagement Reinvention from Top to Bottom: Building a Crown Jewel in Rural Appalachia
Library Administration Carlie Pelfrey, Library Director, Lawrence County Public Library
Toby Olsen, Project Architect, OPN Architects

The Lawrence County Public Library asked a simple question: Why can’t we be the benchmark for
future libraries? By articulating a bold vision and finding the ideal design partner, we are proving
a flexible and modern library thrives anywhere. This case study of our process and newly
completed renovation shows how creating a destination and community epicenter is not your
typical library remodel. It can be done on a tight budget, with joy, and aspirational results. We’d
                         like to show you how.

Community Engagement Adult Education and Libraries: A Natural Collaboration for GED® Testing
Natalie Cummins, GED Administrator, Kentucky Skills U, Office of Adult Education

The public library is a hub in communities across Kentucky. The natural alignment between the
missions of adult education and public libraries lends itself to deep collaboration. One of the
manifestations of this partnership is GED® Testing Centers based in public libraries. Participants in
the session will learn the benefits of hosting a GED® Testing Center and will receive clear
information on the process of making such a center a reality for their patrons.

Collections Browsing Without Entering - Reader's Advisory in the Covid-19 Era
Contemporary Issues Logan Rains, Public Services Coordinator, Kenton County Public Library
Jessica Slone, Patron Experience Librarian, Kenton County Public Library
Janice Shepherd, Patron Experience Librarian, Kenton County Public Library
Christy Shepherd, Outreach Services Associate, Kenton County Public Library

How do we provide a browsing experience to patrons that cannot come into our buildings to
browse themselves? Staff at the Kenton County Public Library convened to brainstorm new ways
to get books into our patron’s hands despite the closure of our branches. Our goal was to tackle
reader’s advisory in the COVID-19 era and beyond. The result has been an ongoing experiment in
RA that has seen multiple projects grow from the “idea” stage to reality – with varying degrees of
                         success.

Collections Managing, Budgeting & Planning Ematerials Collections
Library Administration Patty Clark, Digital Services Librarian, Oldham County Public Library

Katie Justice, KLU Consortium Coordinator and Digital Services Librarian, Boone County Public Library

Are there best practices for Kentucky public libraries to manage, budget and plan for increasing
demand, rising costs and pricing changes of ematerials? What criteria are most useful for
purchase decisions, specifically in terms of Advantage copies? What ways can libraries assess our
ematerials collections and their use to provide useful data? We encourage you to actively engage
in this discussion as the conversation provides an opportunity to share information, gather and
address concerns and determine efficient ways to purchase and manage ematerials.

Community Engagement Programming in the Time of COVID
Contemporary Issues Morgan Mullins, Art & Technology Specialist, Rowan County Public Library

A showcase of library programming and collection tactics that have proven successful for our
library during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This session is intended to honor the dedication
of library staff during these harrowing times, to highlight technical challenges in programming
and collections development, and to share ideas that have been effective for us. Hopefully our
struggles and victories will help other libraries, so please feel free to steal our methods!

Youth Services Creating Mindful Moments at the Library

mindfulness into youth services--specifically through a mindfulness story time. These story times
capture the best parts of the library--books, resources, and community--while providing a space
to introduce children to breathing exercises, gratitude, and more. This session will talk about best
                          resources, best practices, and demonstrations.

thoughts about revisions to be made to the Standards process and evaluation to make this
instrument a useful tool for all Kentucky libraries to complete as a part of planning and advocacy

what is involved in joining a consortium and what lessons we have learned from this project so
far. The audience for this would be anyone interested in joining KTECH, starting their own
consortium, or planning a large project coordinated between multiple libraries.

ideas are disposable. This session will take that fundamental truth straight into the library. We
will explore insecurity in the workplace, avoiding toxicity in systemic hierarchy, healthy
brainstorming, and creating a culture of confident workers who bring ingenuity and life to the

                          Can Help)
Carrie Green, User Education Librarian, Jessamine County Public Library

Librarian Carrie Green’s book "Studies of Familiar Birds: Poems" (Able Muse Press, 2020) uses
research from books, archives, and digital libraries to tell the story of Virginia and Genevieve
Jones, authors of "Illustrations of the Nests and Eggs of Birds of Ohio" (1886). In this session,
Green will read poems to a slideshow of egg-and-nest illustrations, describing her research
process for each poem. She will also share ways that libraries can support creative writers in their
                          research.

Advocacy & Development Is it Time to Make Some Friends?
Wayne Onkst, President, Friends of Kentucky Libraries

With decreasing revenue but increasing demands for service, you may need a new stream of
revenue to fund programs or meet other needs. Or you may need a dedicated group to advocate
for your library or volunteer. If so, you can join about 40 Kentucky libraries that have formed

Concurrent Session Block 3

Collections Restoring History: Designing an African American Research Database
Contemporary Issues Jennifer Gregory, Cataloging and Collection Services Manager, Boone County Public Library
Bridget Striker, Local History Coordinator, Boone County Public Library

Since 2013, BCPL's Local History Department has gathered thousands of bits of data relating to
African American history in Boone County. In 2019, the library used an opensource platform built
on linked data standards to create a comprehensive online database of all enslavement data,
illuminating the complex relationships between people, organizations, and events. More than a
year later, the database continues to evolve, incorporating new research in post-war racial
                          violence and mass migrations.

Community Engagement Public Libraries, Passports and Profits
Ruth Thomas, Reference Librarian, Pulaski County Public Library
Brooke Bowers, Assistant Children's Librarian, Pulaski County Public Library

Are you interested in making your library a Passport Acceptance Facility? We will discuss how to
get started, the basics of the process, the costs involved, the profit potential, and the information
and resources needed to get started.

Advocacy & Development Creating a Great Library Board of Trustees
Library Administration Georgia de Araujo, Library Director, Boyle County Public Library
Lonnie Harp, President, Danville Library, Inc.
Margaret Young Levi, Member, Boyle County Library District
We all know how challenging it is to find five community members who are interested, willing,
and qualified to serve as library trustees. The Boyle County Public Library's unique structure, with
its public library district working together with a century-old private library, requires 17 trustees.
Find out how Boyle County works to recruit and train a strong library board that supports the role
of the library in the community.
