A Little Bit About Me... • I was born and raised in Sacramento. I graduated from Sacramento State. • I’ve been teaching for 30 years. I LOVE 2nd grade! • My family includes my husband Curtiss- a high school English teacher, my 20 year old son Alex- a student at Cal Poly, and my 18 year old daughter Ella - soon to be a first year student at Cal Poly. We will have alot of Distance Learning going on in my household too. • I enjoy family time, traveling, all types of exercise, cooking, and gardening.
Wonderful Griffins We...S.O.A.R WE are Safe, Open-minded, Accountable, and Resilient ★ At McGarvey we recognize behaviors that support learning. ★ Additionally I strive to set very clear limits and expectations for my students. This will be the foundation of our first few weeks of school. A good amount of time in our early weeks will also be spent on getting to know each other. ★ Our daily morning meetings and Social Emotional Learning lessons will focus on developing a growth mindset and will support our school expectations.
Our Classroom Platforms Activities and Announcements Daily Zoom Login, Weekly Plan, Learning Targets, Menus, Assignments, and (I am still learning - so this Activities won’t begin immediately)
Communication ★ Communication and relationship building is extremely important to me. Please share any questions or concerns as needed. We will figure this out together! ★ Email and use of the Google Classroom will be my primary forms of communication. ★ I will post the schedule for the week as well as monthly newsletters. ★ I will plan monthly parent Zoom meetings. ★ Individual Zoom conferences can be requested at any time.
DAILY EXPECTATIONS ● Be on time and ready for our Daily Zoom. School now begins at 8:00. ● Have your device charged and ready to go. ● Be prepared with all of your school supplies nearby. ● Have a Growth Mindset and be ready to learn! *Please be sure to watch the DISTANCE LEARNING EXPECTATIONS presentation together as a family.
nd 2 Grade Distance Learning Schedule 8:00 Morning Meeting 8:30 Math 9:40 Reading, Writing, Grammar 10:00 Snack Break 10:20 Work Work, Phonemic Awareness 11:00 Reading, Writing, Grammar 11:45 Social Emotional Learning, Social Studies, Science 12:15 Lunch 12:50 Independent Work Time: Assessments, Small Groups (Not all students will be expected to check back in each afternoon. 1:55 End of day (11:05 on monday) *Please note, brainbreaks will happen throughout the day as needed. This is a flexible schedule and changes will be made as needed.
Independent Work Time ★ Independent (asynchronous) work time will take place after lunch. ★ Students will have choice menus in various subject areas and interactive work assigned in the Google Classroom. ★ Various links and activities will be available for enrichment. ★ Assessments and small group instruction will take place during this time. Small groups of students may be asked to check in during this time on assigned days (1 - 2 days a week.)
nd 2 Grade Curriculum • Reading/Language Arts: Reading Wonders, Rooted in Reading(thematic program working on comprehension and language skills), Word Work, Writing Journal, Writing Prompts • Math: Go Math, Math Journals, Number Talks, Fast As a Flash (fact fluency practice) • Science: Mystery Science, Interactive Science Book • Social Studies: Impact California, Scholastic News • Physical Education: Mrs. Haynes, Go Noodle Activities • Character Education: SOAR traits, Wonder, and Social Emotional Learning • Computer Education: Mrs. Bolton :
Distance Learning Supplies *Learning supplies will be distributed on 8/19 from 8:30 - 10 in school parking lot *School supplies are used for school activities only *Keep all items in the container sent home or in a container of your choice *Always have supplies available in your designated learning space Additional supplies that are helpful: Additional Sharpened Pencils Colored Markers Whiter Drawing Paper Additional whiteboard markers Colored Pencils Black Sharpie(for directed drawing activities) Timer (for recess breaks) Several independent reading books Please see my Amazon Wish List if you are interested in contributing to our classroom.
Grading/Progress Reports/Report Cards •Progress Reports: First 6-7 weeks of each trimester •Conferences will be scheduled as needed, but can be requested at any time throughout the year. • Report cards will be sent home three times a year at the end of each trimester. •Letter grades will be given. I will not post grades in Synergy. •We are still awaiting more direction on grading and assessments. •My goal is to provide learning targets in each curricular area and criteria to meet those learning targets. .
Parent Faculty Organization (PFO) ★ Please sign up for a PFO membership. All funds raised go directly back to McGarvey! These funds make a big difference! ★ Parent volunteers will be needed for some school wide functions so please see me if you are interested in helping out.**
