President’s Message - Cindy Stewart January, 2021 This past year has been like no other in our history. We have learned words like pandemic, COVID, social distancing and Zoom. We have not been able to connect with our families and friends in ways we used to. The good news is there is now a vaccine which will hopefully be available to us sooner than later. Many of us have had struggles this year and we have all been affected in some way whether large or small. Keeping in touch is important to us as social creatures. We have plans for the New Year to do some more Zoom connecting, even if it is just having coffee/wine over the computer. I would like people to talk about what they have read or watched and give us ideas what you would participate in. Please send suggestions to Jonie. The ideas could be added to the newsletter as well. Jim and I wish all of you the best for 2021 and may we be together soon. 2
Meet the Board Members . . . Get to know me: Hello all. I've had a mobile life. Born in England, moved to Canada at an early age, and I have lived in 5 provinces. The last province has been Manitoba. This is where I realized I was a "prairie boy" and I have lived here since the 1970’s. I'm married and am (mostly) a retired psychologist. Since early October, we have been hunkered down, staying at home in our bubble, only going out for essentials, and attending the occasional New Horizons Board meetings. My normal interests are golf, photogra- phy, gardening, playing bridge, live theatre, birding/bird feeding, book/film club and social dancing. Stay safe out there and hopefully we can meet again when it is safe to do so. - Graham Watson (Publicity) All about me - Linda Shipman (Membership) I was raised on a farm in Neepawa. I participated in all sports and have played in the Lions Club band. I have worked at Agassiz Drive Inn, on a potato farm, as well as Sportmans Park in Clear Lake. I later became an LPN and fell in love with geriatrics at Deer Lodge Hospital I married Ron and we had 3 children - 2 sons and a daughter. We lived in St James and I was active in many committees and also with Deer Lodge CC. I was widowed in my thirties and worked as a Health Care Aid for 25 years. I met Will in the 90’s and remarried and moved to Sandy Hook. I then retired and took up golf. I love flowers, puzzles and all the wonderful people I have met and our New Horizons family. We have a blended family with 6 kids, 12 grandchildren and 2 great grand kids. Life is good and I am so lucky. 3
Meet the Board Members . . . Vera Ralke - Volunteers I was raised on a farm 6 miles north of Stonewall and I went to a 1 room school for grades 1 - 8. Yes I did walk 3 miles to school in summer and rode in a sledded caboose pulled by a team of horses in the winter. One thing I so fondly remember is rushing home from school on Fridays to the smell of freshly backed bread and cinnamon buns. I got married to Fred in 1954 and had 2 sons - Bob (1956) and Douglas (1959 but died in 1998). I have 4 grandchildren - Sara (38) Robyn (34) Dylan (34) & Cory (31). And 2 great grandchildren - Taylor (21) Epic (13). In 1991 after 38 years in Winnipeg with the Bank of Montreal I took early retirement. We sold our home in Winnipeg and moved out to the cottage in Arnes. We met so many residents who were all retiring and moving to Arnes. Our time was filled with bus gambling trips, dinners, card playing and just socializing. What a life!! In 2008 we moved to Gimli and once again we met so many wonderful people, especially when we joined Gimli New Horizons. Once again dinners, card playing, golfing, floor curling and volunteering was taking up our time. LOVED IT! Sadly Fred passed away in May 2019 - we would have been married 65 years in July 2019. But life goes on. Fortunately I am surrounded by the many friends we made since moving to Gimli. Fred and I considered ourselves so fortunate to enjoy 28 years of retirement - life can’t get any better than that! Stay safe everyone! 4

Holy Smokes - this email looks like it came from my email name (hilites) but when you look at the full email address it’s not me. Beware folks for something like this. It is always a good idea to scroll over the full email address. If you don’t recognize it DELETE IT or report as spam. This is what it should look like if it comes from me. Reminder . . . . The Centre has the following items available for sign-out: ● I-Pads ● Snowshoes 22
Please complete the entire form, sign and return to office 23
