‘The Hut’ Facilities - Our lodge on Whakapapa The Wanganui Ski Club Lodge (‘The Hut’) is situated at an altitude of 1792m - the highest ski club lodge on Mt Ruapehu and indeed New Zealand. Your first run of the day is down to the bottom of either the ‘Rangatira Express’ chairlift or the new ‘Sky Waka’ gondola. Kitchen Fully equipped large kitchen and pantry. Meals are communally cooked and shared – cooked breakfast and dinner. Lounge Complete with all the creature comforts you’d expect, as well as a dance floor and roaring fire. Dining room Dominated by one long wooden table - long to accommodate the whole hut at mealtimes. Ski Room and Ski Storage Our ski room provides convenient storage for skis while you are staying on the slopes, and there is storage for your gear during the off-season also. Drying Room Your gear might become wet on the slopes, but it won’t start the next day that way. Bunkroom Sleeps 28 people in a comfortable ‘community living’ triple section bunkroom. Two bunk rooms with 8 single bunks apiece, and one bunk room with 4 double bunks and 4 single bunks. Bathroom and Showers Each bathroom has 2 toilets and 2 showers. Cleaned every day – it’s one of the Hut chores… Established 1949 The first Wanganui Ski Club hut was built over 60 years ago. Since then countless families have called it home. Three major renovations have taken place since ’49. The Hut then, and still now, is well known for its all-ages friendly atmosphere, delicious hearty meals, and warm creature comforts high on the slopes.
Lodge Operation The Hut is run by its members. A club member is appointed ‘Hut Leader’ and he or she allocates essential daily chores such as meal preparation or vacuuming. Everyone gets a job, and it doesn’t take long to get the hut ship shape. We are a very friendly and family focused club with a long tradition of hospitality. We all pitch in, often we ski together and we remain friends outside of the club environment. The Hut does not have a TV – nor will it ever! The kids learn how to socialize amongst the many new friends and games provided. There is also a lot of quiet reading done by adults in front of the roaring log fire…. and a fair bit of wine consumed from time to time. We are welcoming new members every season who wish to share and contribute to our great club. For a stay at the Hut you will need to bring the following: ▪ Bed linen (sheets & pillow cases) or sleeping bag. The lodge is equipped with blankets and pillows. ▪ Your own mountain apparel. The Hut is situated in an environment that can at times experience extreme weather conditions, (hot and cold). It is important you bring appropriate outdoors snow-wear clothing, sunglasses / goggles, and sunscreen. ▪ Sturdy walking or snow boots are essential. Walking up in ‘sneaker’ shoes is discouraged. ▪ Light indoor apparel including shoes/slippers as après ski footwear inside the hut. ▪ Your own special refreshments. ▪ Any personal items and toiletries you may need
Access The Hut is just one chairlift ride away… Once you have parked in the Whakapapa ski field parking area (in Overnight parking, not the Day Parks), hop on the ‘Rangatira Express’ chairlift. This will take you to Hut Flat. There are three huts on Hut Flat situated close together. We are the highest hut of the three - a 5-minute walk from where you hop off the chairlift. If the lifts are not running, the walk up the Rock Garden to the Hut will take 30 – 45 minutes. Your Bags Unfortunately, your favorite wheelie bag will not cut the mustard when you visit the Hut! You will need to bring your gear in a carry bag at least, or best of all, a backpack – you can carry these on the chairlift with you.
