FROM OUR RABBI DR. HESCHEL AND DR. KING By Rabbi Robert S. Pilavin T he first Shabbat of 2021 – January 2 - is Parashat Vayechi (18 Shevat). By coincidence, Rabbi Dr. Abraham Joshua Heschel passed away on that same Hebrew date – and on Shabbat as well. January 18 is the national observance of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In Selma, it was Dr. Heschel (far right) who marched with Dr. King in a now-iconic photo. Heschel and King enjoyed a great friendship. Heschel invited King to address the Rabbinical Assembly at their March 1968 convention. King was to have been Heschel’s Seder guest a few weeks later. Sadly, he ended up delivering a eulogy at King’s funeral one week before Pesach. While Heschel was a noted scholar and theologian, he is best remembered as a social activist. His most accessible work is The Insecurity of Freedom: Essays on Human Existence. Many of these 20 essays address the Jewish community; others display the wide range of his religious concerns. His 1964 address to the American Medical Association is entitled “The Patient as a Person.” He spoke to both the White House Conference on Children and Youth (1960) and the White House Conference on Aging (1961). He was highly regarded by Christians. “Sacred Image of Man” (1957) was given to the national convention of the Religious Education Association. His “Protestant Renewal: A Jewish View” (1963) was written at the invitation of the editor of the Christian Century. His “The Ecumenical Movement” (1963) was delivered at the dinner for Augustin Cardinal Bea and reprinted in the Catholic News. While he would go on to become an outspoken critic of the Vietnam War, Heschel first involved himself in the struggle for civil rights. For example, “The White Man is On Trial” (1964) was delivered at the Metropolitan Conference on Religion and Race. “Religion and Race” (1963) was the opening address at the National Conference on Religion and Race. The latter essay includes his defense of Dr. King from the clergy who opposed King’s efforts to advance racial equality. Heschel disapprovingly quotes a (white) preacher who claimed that “the job of the minister is to lead the souls of men to God, not to bring about confusion by getting tangled up in transitory social problems.” By contrast, Heschel insisted that the Hebrew prophets believed God was concerned about precisely these problems. In this essay, Heschel offers a famous definition: “A prophet is a person who holds God and men in one thought at one time, at all times.” Heschel continued, “our tragedy begins with the segregation of God, with the bifurcation of the secular and sacred.” Heschel acknowledges the fact that some Americans may have a spotless record where race relations are concerned. Nevertheless, “an honest estimation of the moral state of our society will disclose: Some are guilty, but all are responsible.” Rabbi, continued on page 15 WWW.SONSOFISRAEL.COM 3

Sisterhood Scoop By Mindy Fromm I hope that this newsletter finds you all safe and well. As Chanukah has just past, I hope that you all enjoyed your crispy latkes and donuts dripping with jelly. I sure did. Our Sisterhood Festival of Lights Chanukah Program was a huge success. We shared some treasured family recipes and wonderful heartwarming stories of traditions and memories that went along with them. We all enjoyed our Secret Sister gift exchange that was spearheaded and coordinated by Barbara Zagha and Michelle Fields. Thank you both so much for your efforts. Everyone enjoyed unwrapping a gift that was picked out for each of us from our secret sister. What fun!! And finally, lighting our menorahs together created a heartwarming and uplifting moment. As usual, it was wonderful sharing this with all of you. The ringing in of 2021 certainly will bring many sighs of relief that 2020 is in our past and now we look forward to positive changes in this new year ahead. I pray that the spirit and hopefulness of a new year will push forward and give us peace, health and joyful times. We certainly will have many stories to tell. We look forward to sharing other programs with you in the upcoming months. Some of our sisters are already planning and putting final touches on two special programs. Please watch your email for more information on those and also our upcoming book chats with Jane Goldstein. Our social chair Dorothy Jablonka will be continuing Daytime Social Club meetings. RITUAL NEWS TU B’SHEVAT (15 SHEVAT) IS WEDNESDAY NIGHT JANUARY 27 Tu B’Shevat is the New Year of the Trees. In Israel, the day is celebrated as an ecological awareness day, and trees are planted in celebration. On Tu B’Shevat 1890, Rabbi Ze'ev Yavetz, one of the founders of the Mizrachi movement, took his students to plant trees in the agricultural colony of Zichron Yaakov. This custom was adopted in 1908 by the Jewish Teachers Union and later by the Jewish National Fund. JANUARY 17 SESSION: WHEN ONE RABBI DEFENDED SLAVERY On the eve of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we mark the 160th anniversary of a famous pro- slavery sermon delivered by Rabbi Morris Jacob Raphall (1798-1868). This sermon was given in Congregation B’nai Jeshurun in New York during the period in between Lincoln’s election and the official start of the Civil War. The Rabbi will provide excerpts of this sermon and the arguments used from Genesis 9 and 16, Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5 (the Ten Commandments) and elsewhere. The Rabbi will begin his “Zoom” talk at 7:30 PM Sunday January 17 and end before minyan. From My Perch By Maxine Pilavin Mending the Ties that Break I have recently reconnected with some of my large extended family. Our shared isolation and search for more human interaction likely sparked these renewed links. Cousins with whom I have not had contact in years, have been emailing and texting me. A cousin I phoned in Atlanta told me of her son’s recent marriage. Another cousin living in Israel now keeps me up to date on WhatsApp about happenings in Israel and her family. A cousin in Florida called and informed me of both the sad and the joyful news concerning her husband and son. It is wonderful to expand my list of contacts and fascinating to discover what has been happening in my family’s lives. Still, there was one cousin about whom I was unsure, one with whom I’d had a bumpy relationship many years ago. This cousin seemed to have an exaggerated view of my economic status and once registered a complaint about it. She appeared jealous somehow. Over the years, I contacted her on a couple of occasions, but she never called me. I suspect she never changed her views about me, even 40 years later. Nonetheless, I considered reaching out to her. I emailed, asked her how she was faring, told her what was happening with my family and me, and concluded that she should feel free to reply if she wished. She did not respond. I felt bad about my cousin’s unwillingness to rebuild a relationship. Thoughts surfaced not only about her envious feelings towards me, but also about envy’s destructive effects. In the Torah, we see many examples of this. Cain jealously murders his brother Abel because God preferred Abel’s offering. Joseph’s brothers become jealous of Joseph because he is the favored son. This causes the brothers to try to murder him and then sell him into slavery. Miriam, one of the three most powerful leaders in the Israelite community, speaks poorly of Moses to her brother Aaron. The siblings envy Moses’ special relationship with God, and God punishes Miriam for this. Envy causes a blindness in us. Envious people focus on others’ blessings and do not see their own, which, ironically, may be even more substantial. Jealous people, in emphasizing others’ blessings, are oblivious to others’ bad luck—luck which may actually outweigh their fortunes. Finally, envious people, unable to see beyond their jealousies, end up breaking off relationships with the people they envy, creating a rift in their friendships. Sadly, family members’ negative feelings for one another can last a long time, sometimes for a lifetime. At my wedding, we could not seat any of my grandfather’s seven brothers at the same table because of arguments that took place decades earlier. In my husband’s family, my father-in-law and his brother lived a mile apart from each other, yet neither they nor their families had any interaction for over 35 years. My husband advocates trying to mend the broken ties in our lives. He believes that with periodic attempts, we can chip away at the rotten part of the relationship to reestablish a fruitful one. True, it doesn’t always work, but it’s certainly worth a try. We can rejuvenate relationships and add to our arsenal of contacts. In the words of Marie Kondo, that would spark joy, especially in these isolating times. For any topics you would like addressed in future articles, please email me at: mpilavin@gmail.com. RABBI GEDALIA DOV SCHWARTZ SERVED CONGREGATION SONS OF ISRAEL Rabbi Schwartz, a longtime judge in Orthodox rabbinical courts and a leading authority in Jewish law, passed away December 10. He was 95. Rabbi Schwartz served as lead judge for the Beth Din of America, one of the major Jewish courts in the U.S., for nearly 30 years. He also led the court of the Chicago Rabbinical Council since moving there from Brooklyn in 1987. Prior to his post in Chicago, Schwartz held pulpits in Providence, Rhode Island; Englishtown, New Jersey; Philadelphia and Brooklyn. In announcing his death, the Orthodox Union described Rav Schwartz as “a universally recognized leader of American Jewry whose psak halacha (Jewish legal decisions) and wise counsel were sought by innumerable lay people, community leaders, and rabbis alike.” A native of Newark, NJ, he studied at Yeshiva College and was among the first American-born students to receive semicha (rabbinic ordination) from Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik. Over sixty years ago, his original work “Divrei Regesh” was endorsed by Rav Aaron Kotler of Lakewood. Our synagogue library includes a signed copy of this book given as a gift to Esther and Percy Bloom, of blessed memory, on 9 Elul 5720 (September 1, 1960). The back page of this Talmudic work acknowledges the publishing assistance of prominent members of Sons of Israel: Milton Berger, Jack Goldfine, Dr. Samuel Bar, Murray Yacknowitz, Jack Zackowitz, Anna Berger and Chevrat Lomday Chumash b’Englishtown (The Englishtown Society of Torah Students).
