MILANG RAINFALL THE STICKY BEAKS For December 2019 2019 8.0 (as at 27th) On the 17th of December the Stickys headed off for the last outing of the year, the Christmas lunch. 2018 29.8 In a vote held at the last trip ,it was decided to go to the Wellington Hotel. The weather 2017 33.0 being very hot the decision to stick to air conditioned bus, car and venues had some appeal 2016 55.8 and thanks to George for taking his car. 2015 9.4 The morning tea break was had at Sturt Reserve Murray Bridge, a table to ourselves under the shelter shed and gums by the river before the temp climbed too high. Thanks to Trevor 2014 14.2 for a great fruit cake. 2013 35.6 After our break we headed up to the Murray Bridge Regional Gallery to soak up some 2012 9.8 culture, the exhibition was titled Mallee Routes. Mallee Routes is an ongoing, collective project that explores the South Australian and Victorian Mallee landscapes. Five photo- 2011 30.4 based artists look at the ways in which photography offers insights into the ways that we 2010 83.0 perceive and understand the Mallee’s history and culture. An often stark look at some of SA's oldest Mallee towns which have seen better days, a slice of history stood still in the 2009 26.6 dust. We decided to cross the river past where the historic Bridgeport hotel once proudly Mean 21.2 stood guarding the gateway to the west side of the river. Now a gaping hole in the ground awaiting the $45M redevelopment expected to be completed in the first half of 2021. Lowest 0.0 (1897 & 1904) The development will feature a modern six storey Hotel building with contemporary Highest 105.6 (1992) exterior, complimented by an inspired organic interior. The first floor will house a dedicated conference room designed to cater for large scale events and TOTAL RAINFALL FOR THE YEAR AT END functions. As a modern building it will never replace the historic charm of the century old OF DECEMBER original. Travelling on the old Princess Highway we pulled in at East Side Second-hand, to 2019 266.6 (as at 27th) check for bargains, none. Down to Tailem Bend then across the river to the Wellington Hotel. We were able to choose our meal from the great value seniors menu or the regular 2018 281.5 one. Good food and a chat about the year gone, we headed back to Murray Bridge through 2017 455.1 Jervios for cherries and an ice cream. George, Gerry and Quinny made a detour to the Green Temple. We arrived home in good time for others to attend still more Christmas 2016 572.4 parties. And so it has been a good year for the Sticky's, the highlight probably the overnight 2015 428.0 trip to the Paskerville Field Days, they were all good times out. Something different every outing. 2014 337.7 Next year will start with a planning meeting on January 21st at 10am at MOSH. with a new 2013 484.5 co-ordinator, I am retiring from the job, but it has been an honour and a privilege to have 2012 479.9 had so many memorable times and adventures with the Blokes, I still hope to go on the odd trip but for now Merry, Happy and Safe Christmas to all the Sticky's and their families. 2011 410.0 Cheers JB. 2010 582.8 Groceries Hamburgers Tourist Information Fresh Meat Hot Dogs Telco recharge Fruit & Veg Espresso Coffee iTunes vouchers Take-A-Way Cakes & Pastries Friendly Staff Ph 8537 0801 Shop 9, 10-17 Daranda Terrace Milang Mini Mart Page 11 Milang Community News January 2020

by Bryce Clark (Rev.) Tripping through the Western Plains of Ethiopia Placing my predicaments in an Historical Context Prior to my first three trips to Ethiopia, Sudan had been engulfed in a civil war for over twenty five years leaving millions of people dead, injured and homeless. Kenya and Ethiopia had opened various refugee camps to accommodate the mass influx of humanity across their borders. Each camp housing several thousand people. Some of these people ended up in Australia and some even settled in the little congregation of St Paul’s Ferryden Park in the wester suburbs of Adelaide. These new arrivals asked me to visit their families in the refugee camps, particularly Sherekole, Pignudu and Bonga in the Western Plains of Ethiopia. The Ethopian government and the UNHCR officials had decided to open a new refugee camp in the middle of Anyaak country. About three weeks before I arrived they appeared to inspect their preferred site. The Anyaak were incensed because they had already lost a huge percentage of their country and, once again, they were not consulted. About four days prior to my arrival, Anyaak militia killed six Ethiopian and UNHCR officials. The Government retaliated with brutal force and in a two day onslaught, hundreds of duols or tookles (circular mud and thatch dwellings), an estimated four hundred Anyaak civilians were slaughtered by helicopter gunships. Less than 48 hours later, I walked onto the Bole (pronounced Bowl-ay) airport tarmac, completely ignorant of the country’s upheaval. The nation was on high alert, with heavily armed security at every turn. Adelaide to ADDIS I departed from Adelaide and flew via Melbourne and Bangkok to arrive in Addis Ababa (the capital of Ethiopia) at about 2 am in the morning (Ethiopia works on a 12 hour clock system - the night time starts at our 6 pm so 7 pm becomes 1 o’clock at night and 6am becomes 12 o'clock at night). So my 2am arrival in Ethiopia was 8 o’clock at night Ethiopian time. Cleaner’s Mop and Kalashnikoff I had arrived at Addis Abba airport; a brand new international terminal stood before me but I felt as sick as a dog. I’m pretty sure that I picked up a bug on a stop over in New Delhi - Delhi Belly I think they call it. As soon as I got of the plane I desperately needed a loo. The problem was that I could not avoid the mandatory and deathly slow process of customs and immigration. I grunted and groaned buckled over and stiffened up - what ever it took to prevent a motion being passed in parliament (if you get my meaning). However, It seemed that I wasn’t the only one concerned about the risk of dirty bombs and gas warfare because at every bend in the pathway to the customs counter and around every corner in the airport complex, there was a soldier with a Kalashnikoff rifle held across the chest and at an instance call. I eventually cleared the customs queue and was desperate for the loo. Racing around looking at all the unfamiliar signs I happened upon one that was in either Amharic or Tigrayin - I couldn’t tell - but I was sure it was the Men’s. I threw the door open and was shocked by the demure and very attractive young woman standing between me and the 4 cubicles. It was the miss-match of Kalahsnikoff rifle slung over her shoulder and the mop and mop bucket that she was moving haphazardly over the floor. Stunned and confused I just stood there not knowing what to do. She looked at me ever so briefly and then nodded towards the first cubicle. I took the hint. Relief at last I thought but then as soon as I was appropriately positioned with my dignity down around my ankles the cubicle door - without the luxury of a lock I might add; was thrown open and in came the well armed mop lady. I couldn’t stand - I was in a mess, I couldn’t get out, she stood in the doorway, and anyway, she knocked my ankles with her mop to get me to lift my feet. The dear lady threw more water on the cubicle floor than the Nile River could carry away while I sat in the speaker’s chair trying to control a motion passed from the floor. In a few minutes we had both completed our duties and I reached for the paper dispenser; oh hell, it was empty. I looked at the pretty little lady pleadingly and all she did was shrug her shoulders and left me to my misery. I was frantic. A minute or two later she returned with a toilet brush and very politely left it with me as she closed the door behind her. This was my introduction to Bole airport’s new terminal. I stood up. Made myself respectable and pressed the flush button. Oh hell, the toilets blocked. I made a bee-line for fresh air and the outdoors hoping that I would never see that poor lady again. My next toilet stop was in the reeds down by the creek like most other people in poorer section of Addis Abba. The second instalment in February 2020. MILANG R-6 Campus Students from Milang campus went down to the foreshore in the last week of school to learn about the Latham Snipe, a migratory bird that flies from Japan to Milang each year. To celebrate the arrival of the Snipe, an Art installation will be constructed overlooking the wetlands. Each student decorated a wooden Snipe with their own individual design and we look forward to seeing them in the display. Page 22 Milang Community News January 2020
