THE MAYOR’S MESSAGE Dear Residents: What better way to welcome winter than with an edition of Vivre à Laval where natural heritage and sustainable development are in the spotlight? In fact, the land use planning of our territory is based on this approach, which includes environmental, social, economic— and even cultural—aspects of our development. Revitalization projects are materializing, we continue to implement measures to protect our natural environments, and we are adopting best practices, for example, in managing waste materials. In fact, don’t hesitate to keep the special insert on this subject, where you will find full information on the implementation of black bins for the automated waste collection. Just like sustainable development, volunteering is another important value for Laval. However, this year, since all gatherings have been cancelled, we were unable to highlight the invaluable contribution of our volunteers, as we usually do, at the annual Hosia awards gala event. In order to honour the award recipients with some memorable moments, we nevertheless did have a few surprises in store for them and we are also presenting them to you on the following pages. Please join me in saying THANK YOU to them for their dedication, altruism and immense generosity, especially in this time of crisis where giving of oneself is all the more essential. Over the past few months, the COVID-19 pandemic situation has subjected the entire population to enormous stress and strain. Businesses and organizations, as well as each and every one of us, we have all had to adapt to the many challenges imposed by this very particular situation. Every gesture counts, and we must continue our efforts to comply Marc Demers with the measures that have been put in place. Let’s take care of our loved ones—from maire.laval.ca a distance or in virtual mode, if need be. Let’s keep well informed and, most importantly, Marc Demers, mayor of Laval let’s continue to keep smiling, behind our face covering. GOOD TO KNOW Major Renovations at City Hall Laval City Hall was constructed in 1963-1964. It is a building that is part of Laval’s urban heritage, as it represents a unique complex whose modern architectural concept led the designers to win the first architectural competition in Québec. The building has preserved many of its original features, which are now deteriorating or no longer meet current standards, so renovations have therefore become necessary. The work project will begin next year, will take about four years to complete and includes a decontamination phase, repairs and upgrading to meet standards, reconstruction of the building’s annex and all its components (the former fire station, the connecting passageway, the garage and the boiler room) as well as exterior improvements. During the work, the occupants of City Hall—including the offices of the Mayor, elected officials, independents and the Opposition, the City Manager’s Office, the registry and Ombudsman purchasing departments as well as the courier service—will be temporarily relocated to 3131 boulevard Saint-Martin Ouest.
