History lessons with Dan Snow Historian and broadcaster Dan Snow will host history lessons for children from Monday 4th May. At 4pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Dan will host a History Hit live on YouTube’s Timeline channel that will focus on a different aspect of the Second World War and aim to teach the public about the importance of VE Day. He has also created Dan Snow's VE Day Challenge to get your creativity flowing (entries due by 6th May!)
Make your own bunting You can make your own special VE day bunting to display at home. You can decorate your bunting with pictures of whatever inspires you, whether it’s those who fought on the frontline or worked hard on the Homefront, or whether it’s a celebration of enduring peace or your own personal hero. Hang your bunting with pride over the weekend of Friday 8 May - Sunday 10 May and make sure you share your pictures with us at Longdean and on social media using the hashtags #GreatBritishBunting, #VEDay75 and #BBCMakeaDifference
Posters Print your own VE Day Posters and colour them in or personalise them with a dedicated message and display them in your windows. Or how about colouring in one of these lego heroes? Why not take a photo of yourself making the famous ‘V for Victory’ sign as shown in the picture?
Hair and makeup Whilst you are joining in celebrations why not look the part? Try out this 1940's makeup tutorial or learn how to do your hair with this Victory rolls tutorial.

Nationwide Singalong The Queen will give a speech on TV to mark the occasion on Friday 8th May at 9pm (the same time that her father King George VI addressed the nation on VE Day 1945.) At the end of the speech she is asking everyone to open their doors and windows and sing along to “We’ll Meet Again” by Dame Vera Lynn. Learn the words and tune here.
Captain Tom Whilst we are celebrating VE Day it is worth remembering the Nation’s hero Captain Tom Moore who is a WW2 Veteran and recently raised over £30 million for NHS charities by walking 100 laps of his garden before his 100th Birthday.
1940s Games • During WW2, children played many different games, both in groups and individually. Children commonly played games like hop scotch, jump rope, chess together, as well as all types of ball games. • Young children loved to play marbles, play school and house, and played with cars or dolls. Kids in the neighbourhood loved playing games out on the street such as, "Red Light Green Light". • Board games were popular like Monopoly, Scrabble and Dominoes. • Cards were a really big hit like Rummy and Solitaire. • Turns out Miss Keith and Miss Elms’ favourite game Spoons was also really popular at this time!
1940s Dance Party like it’s 1945! Why not learn the Charleston, the Jitterbug or to Swing Dance? Or be inspired by this Strictly Come Dancing 1940s routine!
