CARITAS TO RELEASE ITS SEVENTH STATE OF THE ENVIRONMENT REPORT WITH AN ONLINE WEBINAR On Friday 2nd October, Caritas will release its annual ‘State of the Environment for Oceania’ report titled “Towards new horizons,” ahead of the feast day of St Francis of Assisi on 4 October. To mark the event, members of Caritas Oceania across the Pacific will host an online webinar discussing how key environmental issues have been impacting the wellbeing of communities. This year, the COVID-19 crisis has underscored our mutual vulnerability, interconnectedness and solidarity. For those already living with the climate emergency, it has added another layer of stress and complication. Caritas staff and partners will discuss the impact on people and communities of: coastal erosion and sea level rise; food and water; extreme weather; offshore mining and drilling; and access to climate finance. Panellists include report lead writer Martin de Jong and Caritas Tonga Director Amelia Ma’afu, along with For more information about the webinar Ursula Rakova of Tulele Peisa, Carteret Islands, Papua or the report please send us an email at New Guinea, and Kositatino Tikomaibolatagane of caritas@caritas.org.nz, or call us on Caritas Fiji. CARITAS GIFTS CHEQUED OUT From late last year, Kiwibank stopped issuing new HOPE LIFE PEACE LEARNING cheque books, and in February this year, they ended the processing of cheques. This was an early signal of changes afoot in the banking sector. With a gradual phasing out from early next year, other banks are following suit. By late 2021 cheques will be a thing of the past. We recognise that many of our donors use this method to support our work. Caritas, along with others in the charity sector are looking at how we can help our valued supporters to make this transition. We are in discussion with the banks and the banking association to see how we can make this fast and hassle-free for you. Some of the initiatives being rolled out include free digital banking courses, digital education hubs and other less tech-centric options such as easier phone banking and printed guidance. Be assured, we will stay in touch with you regularly on this new development and are committed to ensuring this change is as painless as possible.
