What a year we are having at camp Arrowhead! Despite still dealing with the Covid pandemic, our children are thriving in the outdoors and it is so wonderful to see! After a year, (again!), like no other, camp has been just what our wonderful kids have needed. It brings all of us at Arrowhead great joy and pride working with your precious children every day. The pandemic has been a challenge for all of us, but especially our children. They have endured months of lockdowns, remote learning, social distancing and masking for months. Coming to camp has been such a great release for all of them and a great break from the pandemic. It has been an amazing summer for our campers, staff and I. Every day we see new challenges being met and new accomplishments achieved. There is nothing better than watching your children grow up right in front of our eyes daily. Their laughter and smiles are the best sights and sounds that we get to see and hear at Arrowhead. We want to thank all of our staff, campers and parents that have helped make this summer so special. We are not back to a total “normal” Arrowhead summer, but we are getting close! Hopefully by 2022, Covid will be in the rear view mirror, and we can all have a total stress free summer. Until then study hard, play hard and we cannot wait to see everyone next summer! Yours for better camping, Uncle Brian 2
JUNIOR CAMP What a difference a year makes! All the Arrowhead Junior campers, counselors, JC’s, and CIT’s have been enjoying all fun activities and events this summer. One of the activities that we could not do last summer, but we can this summer, is Culinary Arts. Junior Campers have enjoyed making pizza sushi, indoor s’mores, and fruit filled pastries. I know a lot of Junior Campers have been making these same recipes at home with their family! Bunk on bunk activities are back in full swing as well, at Junior Athletic Field, the arena, and kickball. This summer we were able to have our Special Friday Shows back. The Junior Campers especially enjoyed Puppets Pizzazz, Silly Joe, and Jungle John. It’s been especially nice to see our Junior campers have some milestones, such as catching their first fish, going down the zip-line for the first time, or getting their first hole in one. Over the last few weeks we have enjoyed special events, such as Halloween Day, Pajama Day, and the Junior Olympics. The final weeks of camp will bring even more special events, like the Road Runner Race, the Awards Ceremony, the Land and Sea Carnivals. This summer wouldn’t the same without our incredible CIT’s, Junior Counselors, and Senior Counselors. They work so hard to make sure all of our campers are happy and safe. I know the next few weeks will bring even more smiles, laughter, and joy. Aunt Carrie Chaitt – Junior Camp Director INTERMEDIATE CAMP At ARROWHEAD we were so excited to get the season of summer 2021 up and running. While the summer of 2020 was a huge success, we couldn’t wait for a fresh start with the promise of 2021. This summer has not disappointed. While we are wearing masks for transportation and indoor activities, nothing has slowed us down. We have opened up even more of our amazing activities (including Club Day, the Camp Show, and Color War) and the Intermediate Campers have jumped right back into the swing of things. They loved being involved in all parts of the ARROWHEAD day, as they ran, swam, and played with friends all day long. The summer would not have been such a great success if it weren’t for our amazing staff. A special shout out goes to Mor, Anna, Morgan, Jenna, Erica, Abbie, Evan, Chris H., David, Chris Q, Aaron, Keith, and Lucas. Thank you everyone and I look forward to seeing you all during the summer of 2022! Aunt Kristen Cheney – Intermediate Camp Director SENIOR CAMP The summer of 2021 has been a great rebound summer. Last year covid restrictions put a stop to almost everything we tried to do. This year, despite some restrictions still in place, we managed to get back to some of the activities that make Arrowhead great. The return of leagues, Club Day, Pentathlon and MTV Day has excited both the kids and the staff. We have slowly gotten back to the way things should be, and I couldn’t be happier! Leagues have been competitive and tense. It’s great to see the campers spirit of competition and sportsmanship return. Club Day is allowing the campers to revisit activities they love or get to activities they usually don’t get a chance to go to. It’s just fantastic to see everyone enjoying themselves. We couldn’t do any of this without our amazing staff and campers. A special thanks to Aunts Jen, Bella, Morgan and Angie and Uncles Chris, Jerry, Shane, Scott and Mike for your tremendous dedication to both the camp and campers. One again this has been a difficult year and your love for the kids and desire to make Arrowhead the best camp around is evident. Finally, a special thank you to the campers! YOU are the reason we do this and your smiles and joy show how great this all is when we all work together!! Uncle Randy Straff- Senior Camp Director 3
CITs This year’s CITs are fantastic. Your ability to work with the kids and grow and mature in the face of a pandemic is just awesome. We had the opportunity to get to all of our scheduled trips this year and that was great. You handled your bunks beautifully and I watched you become better JCs and more importantly, better people. Many of you were immediately put into positions of authority and you did such a great job with that. Your counselors loved you and your campers adored you. I was so impressed at how you all picked up the job and ran with it. We had the opportunity to do some training but most of the positive results were because of your dedication and love of Arrowhead. I am confident that when you all come back as JCs next year you will be tremendously prepared for the job. Good luck to all of you this school year and see y’all in the summer of 2022!! Uncle Randy Straff- CIT Director JUNIOR OLYMPICS The fifth annual Junior Olympics were held on July 26th and July 27th of this year. The timing couldn’t be any better with the real Olympic games happening at the same time in Tokyo. On the first day, campers participated in the Opening Ceremonies, which included the passing of Olympic torch occupied by Olympic music. On the second day, campers represented the countries of England, Finland, Switzerland, Morocco, Israel, Scotland, Japan, Ireland, Poland, France, Germany, and Italy as they competed in relay races. After a long day of competition, the campers watched as the Olympic Torch was extinguished. All campers received Olympic medals for their efforts and spirit. The two days were exciting and fun for all campers and counselors. ARROWHEAD 2021 Bunk Picture Update It was a terrific day when all Arrowheaders received their new ARROWHEAD t-shirts and brought their brightest smiles with them for picture day. We are currently developing all photographs. Watch your mail in mid-September, as all Arrowheaders who were in attendance that day will be receiving their 2021 8X10 glossy bunk picture. Here’s to memories in the making! PROPER FOOTWEAR AT CAMP We are informing all of our parents that sneakers and sneakers only are the appropriate footwear for your children to wear during our camp day. Any types of sandals, flip-flops, pool shoes etc. are not only inappropriate, but also dangerous. Our campers are engaged in various activities including running, jumping, climbing, etc. and sneakers are for these endeavors. Parents, we ask you to please follow our advice for the safety of your children. Thank you. SOMETHING SERIOUS- SOMETHING SWEET! Many campers at ARROWHEAD have severe food and bee sting allergies. Due to the increasing amount of campers who enjoy celebrating their birthdays at camp we have to be extra cautious. We are asking that treats be sent in for special occasions only. A popular suggestion is Munchkins from Dunkin Donuts or Soft Pretzels. We are also insisting that all food of any kind be eaten inside the air-conditioned Mess Hall. This will enable us to monitor the bees, allergies and clean-up more safely. Thank you. 4
ARCHERY This 2021 archery season has been amazing! So many campers have been learning the skills of archery and are excelling at firing high scores! This is my 12th year at Arrowhead and I am impressed with the sportsmanship, camaraderie and support that the campers have in rooting for their bunk mates! Campers are shooting arrows with long bows, re-curve bows and compound bows! Even the junior bunks are getting in on the fun and shooting very well. I look forward to many more years here at arrowhead and I’m excited to see the campers enjoying themselves on the archery field. Uncle Joel MARKSMANSHIP What a great start to this camp season at Arrowhead. This is my third year as marksmanship specialist and I still get a great feeling being part of this wonderful staff and getting to see our campers transform from not knowing how to hold or for some what a pellet gun was, to learning the safety and fundamentals of how to operate one. Over these last five weeks I’ve gotten a chance to see our campers transform from not being able to hit the paper the target is on to placing 10 of their 12 shots on target and scoring high points for their bunk and with that I am looking forward to tournament week to see just how much each camper has grown. This year we’ve also added a new dimension of marksmanship in an old tradition of slingshots. The kids are finding it to be a bit challenging but are enjoying it nevertheless. I am looking forward to the rest of the summer with them and many, many, more summers here with our campers and a great staff at Arrowhead Uncle Rob BOATING The 2021 season has been a busy one down at the docks! As of the end of the 5th week of Camp, 207 ARROWHEADERS have earned their CANOE LICENSES, an additional 21 have mastered our Rowboats, “Big Bertha” and “The Bathtub”, to earn their ROWBOAT LICENSES, and 15 have gone the “Extra (Nautical) Mile” to get BOTH LICENSES! The Junior Campers are doing a wonderful job propelling themselves across the surface in our “Duckie-Boats,” while the Intermediate and Senior Campers take advantage of our paddle boats, as well as the canoes and rowboats. All boaters enjoy getting to take in the wonderful views from the observation deck on “Île de la Tour.” LAKE ARROWHEAD also provides our HAPPY CAMPERS with a wonderful wildlife habitat where they can observe Painted Turtles sunning themselves on “Turtle Rock,” Dragon Flies and Damsel Flies skimming across the water, Barn Swallows feeding mid-flight on small insects and occasionally getting drinks as they swoop and swerve just above the water, and our newest residents, a family of Green Herons (a mother and four young). With so much to see and do out on the water, it’s no wonder the Summer has flown by! From Uncle Steve, Uncle Nick, & Uncle Nick FISHING Welcome to Lake Arrowhead where the fish are big and the smiles are even bigger! Here at the lake, campers can find themselves reeling in some “sunnies” and might even come across the occasional bass! And who could forget the legendary snapping turtle, Tank? Fishers at Lake Arrowhead will earn their fishing licenses at the beginning of the season to ensure their fishing skills are safe and up to par. If campers don’t feel like fishing there is plenty of wildlife down at the lake waiting to be explored. The staff down at fishing is always eager to see all the happy campers and especially the excitement when they catch their first fish! Fishing is one of the most fun activities at Camp Arrowhead! Aunt Emily, Uncle Dawson, and Uncle Breyon 5
TENNIS It’s always an honor to be on the Arrowhead courts and instructing the kids how to play the wonderful sport of tennis. It has been a fantastic summer of 2021 thus far and we’re looking forward to completing the final three weeks in grand fashion. Under the direction of Uncle Andy and Aunt Courtney, the campers have been working on their forehands, backhands, forehand volleys and backhand volleys. Watching the improvement has been such a thrill!!! We are extremely proud of the campers! After instruction each day, the campers have been rewarded with popular games such as “Jailbreak” and “King of the Court.” Even during these fun games, the campers continue to work on their strokes and it’s a pleasure to see. Thank you so much to Uncle Brian and the entire Arrowhead staff for allowing us this platform to teach the campers the great game of tennis! Uncle Andy & Aunt Courtney ARTS & CRAFTS I It's been another fun summer outside at Art I. Junior campers have been busy practicing their cutting, gluing, and painting skills, making crowns, patriotic hats, fish bowls, and squish monsters. They love model magic clay and some are learning to rainbow loom on their fingers! Senior girls learned to finger knit, braid headbands, and embroider pendant flags. They designed their own resin pendant bracelets with fun paper, washi tape, and stickers. As always, gimp and beads are the senior camp favorite! Looking forward to all the art fun in these final weeks of camp! Aunt Macie GYM / PE After overcoming the obstacles of the Covid Pandemic, continuing my second year at Camp Arrowhead as its P.E./Gymnastics Specialist has been a welcome return to normalcy – which includes bringing back the highly anticipated gymnastics weeks. Campers of all ages have enjoyed exciting activities such as obstacle courses, and “slam the cheese” along with practicing on the balance beam, ring swings, and of course flips. For our junior campers, new games such as “Night at the Museum, Trash War, and Red Tails” have challenged their athletic skills and allowed them to release their pent-up energy once again from being indoors. Additionally, new games challenged our intermediate and senior campers to truly appreciate teamwork and communication through new variations of “Capture the Flag” and "Kick the Cone" along with the tailgate classic, “Corn Hole”. Honestly, I am pleased to say that all of our campers immediately hit the ground running with excitement, and participation for another fun year! Uncle David DRIVING RANGE The Driving Range at Arrowhead this summer has been a ton of fun! We start off every day by making sure we’re practicing our swing technique correctly, and just about every day we have time to hit a few as far as we can. Everybody has improved so much, even our friends who came in knowing a lot about golf already! Tournament week is a blast because our Extreme Golf Obstacle Course keeps everybody trying their best and having fun doing it all day long. My first summer at Arrowhead has been so much fun, I can’t wait for us all to finish the summer strong! Uncle Chris 6
ELECTRONIC POLICY One of the best, if not the best part, of summer camp is being able to enjoy the great outdoors. This is especially true with the winter we just had which trapped us indoors. Add to this that our children have spent so much time sitting in rows with pencil & paper and taking standardized tests, and they really need to be participating in all that ARROWHEAD has to offer so we respectfully request that all cell phones, mp3 players, tablets, etc. stay at home where they will be "safe & sound." UNCLAIMED CLOTHING Unclaimed clothing and other belongings left behind after camp ends will be on display from Saturday, August 14th through LABOR DAY in our Arena area in the playground. Please feel free to take a ride out anytime and browse through these items; you may find what you’ve been looking for! 7
