SEPTEMBER 2018 VOLUME 12 ISSUE 12 UNM COACH & CONDUCTOR TO TALK ABOUT JENŮFA THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 5:30 TO 7:00PM SANTA FE WOMAN’S CLUB 1616 OLD PECOS TRAIL FREE FOR MEMBERS, $10 FOR NON-MEMBERS Dr. Kristin Ditlow, on faculty at UNM as the Assistant Professor of Vocal Coaching, made a splash at the Opera Guild’s Salon last November when she moderated a discussion about the art of conducting. She will help us get ready for The Santa Fe Opera’s 2019 season with a talk about Jenůfa, an opera that will be making its company premiere. Dr. Ditlow is particularly qualified to talk about this opera. She has coached and been music director for scenes from the opera while in residence in Prague in 2006. This time in the Czech Republic was also the start of her study in Czech Language and Diction. Her talk will be illustrated with musical examples, including some played on the piano. We hope you can join us on Thursday, September 13, beginning at 5:30PM, at the Santa Fe Woman’s Club for her talk. An accomplished concert pianist, vocal coach, accompanist, and conductor, Dr. Ditlow boasts an impressive resume that includes appearances at the San Francisco Opera, the Spoleto Festival USA, and Carnegie Hall. She has worked with many world-famous artists including Frederica Von Stade, Dawn Upshaw, Stephanie Blythe, Sir Thomas Allen, and Itzhak Perlman. She is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory and earned her doctorate from the Eastman School of Music. In the operatic world, she has assisted the following conductors: Marin Alsop, Maurizio Barbacini, Michael Borowitz, Stephen Byess, Roger Cantrell, Thomas Cunningham, Sir Colin Davis, Brian DeMaris, Joseph Flummerfelt, Douglas Kinney Frost, Benton Hess, Warren Jackson, Andrew Megill, Paolo Paroni, Corrado Rovaris, Robert Spano, and Michael Spierman. Dr. Ditlow’s passion for chamber music and entrepreneurial focus has led to her founding of two chamber ensembles, the Lukens Piano Trio (her current ensemble) and the Mühlenberg Piano Quartet. Dr. Ditlow is devoted to promoting new music, as well as instrumental and vocal chamber music. Her innovative programming includes a variety of vocal chamber music and cross-genre projects. Be sure to join us for the event on September 13 at 5:30PM. We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Ditlow to the podium at the Santa Fe Opera Guild.
SAVE THE DATE FOR LA BOHÈME: PUCCINI VS. LEONCAVALLO LA BOHÈME SMACKDOWN TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9, 5:30 - 7:00PM THE SANTA FE WOMAN’S CLUB 1616 OLD PECOS TRAIL FREE FOR MEMBERS, NON-MEMBERS $10 Get ready for the “Bohème Smackdown” when Mark Tiarks compares and contrasts Leoncavallo’s and Puccini’s versions of the work that will kick off The Santa Fe Opera’s 2019 season. What was happening in the cut-throat Italian opera world during the 1890s? How did audiences react to each composer’s work? How did Puccini’s version come to be a perennial favorite, with Leoncavallo’s rendition now seldom performed? Mr. Tiarks will illustrate his talk with musical examples. This speaker delighted Santa Fe Opera Guild audiences in the 2017/2018 season with an examination of how opera music was used in aminated cartoons and his presentation about Bernstein’s Candide and West Side Story. His impressive background includes work with The Santa Fe Opera, Chicago Opera Theatre, and Opera Theatre of St. Louis. In his multi-faceted role as Director of Planning and Marketing with The Santa Fe Opera, he was responsible for editing the annual program book, presenting Prelude talks in Stieren Hall, producing community performances featuring the Mark Tiarks Apprentice Singers, and inaugurating the company’s season preview radio broadcasts. 2018 MEET THE DIVO Kevin Burdette and Bill Madison treated Santa Fe Opera Guild members and guests to a delightful 2018 Meet the Divo. Burdette’s portrayals of Voltaire/Pangloss/Cacambo/Martin in Candide and the Major-Domo in Ariadne auf Naxos have drawn upon his talent as an actor as well as a musician. He pointed out that it isn’t easy to play a speaking role in opera because the performer is not miked. Mr. Burdette amused and amazed the audience with a sample of elocution exercises that have helped him master the verbal challenges of this summer’s roles. Mr. Burdette also related how he helped differentiate his five characters with distinctly different accents. He and Mr. Madison explored Burdette’s background as an attorney, with a law degree from Columbia University and experience with a leading New York law firm, as well as the profound impact that fatherhood has had on his artistic interpretations. The Santa Fe Opera Guild extends its deep appreciation for the time and talent that Kevin Burdette and Bill Madison brought to this special event, and to The Santa Fe Opera for its generous support of our programming. Many volunteers made 2018’s Meet the Divo possible. Barbara Anderson- Kevin Burdette Acosta and Emma Suarez put together a lovely reception, complete with a bunch of yummy cookies baked by Carol Toobin. Jill Harrington arranged the flowers and lent us her beautiful tablecloths to give the reception extra style and flair. Joyce Blalock, Mim Chapman, Judy Costlow, Ken Hunt, Steve Kerchoff, Veronica Reed, Leslie Veditz, and Eileen Woodbury arrived early to help with check-in and greeting. And behind the scenes, Lucinda Surber helped us manage the online registration, and Rebecca Jensen coordinated a dynamite publicity program. A big thank you to everyone! Bill Madison

THE SANTA FE OPERA JOINS NEW CONSORTIUM Opera for All Voices was born out of the need for works with outstanding artistic quality that can still reach all audiences via both accessibility of subject material and manageable budgets. The project also addresses the serious need to bring new audiences to opera by commissioning important works that speak to all voices, designed with modern attention spans in mind, and aimed at breaking down pre-conceived notions that opera is antiquated or elitist. The Opera for All Voices (OFAV) consortium companies include the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Minnesota Opera, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, The Santa Fe Opera, San Francisco Opera, Sarasota Opera, and Seattle Opera. The teams behind the first two commissions were selected via a rigorous process with feedback from all participating companies. Both teams embody the spirit of the initiative in their previous works, telling stories with purpose through music. Augusta Read Thomas, composer of the first commission, boasts a prolific collection of orchestral, chamber, choral and vocal works. Librettist Leslie Dunton-Downer, author of the Essential Shakespeare Handbook, among other publications, joins Augusta on this project. The music behind the second commission comes from Laura Kaminsky, a composer of opera, orchestra, chamber, vocal and choral music who’s scores often address social-political issues such as sustainability, war, and human rights. Librettist Kimberly Reed, a frequent opera collaborator with Kaminsky, joins her for this project. What if we fail? What if we succeed? What if we keep imagining? These and other questions guide the consortium through the ups and downs of a new initiative called Opera for All Voices. Listen in as Andrea Fellows Walters and Brandon Neal of the Santa Fe Opera discuss these and other questions in this engaging podcast. Scroll down on the page and click on Key Change logo.

VIVACE BOOK GROUP MONDAYS, SEPTEMBER 10, NOVEMBER 12 AT 6:15PM - 7:30PM PRE-DISCUSSION SOCIAL 5:45PM COLLECTED WORKS 202 GALISTEO STREET, SANTA FE COMPLIMENTARY FOR GUILD MEMBERS; NON-MEMBERS $5 Monday, September 10: Hallelujah Junction, by John Adams. This memoir, written by the famed American composer, promises to deepen appreciation of Doctor Atomic. With inspirations that ranged from Mozart to the Grateful Dead to Miles Davis, Adams brings the reader on a creative odyssey, illuminating the mysterious process of composition while exploring the social history that helped to shape his music and life. Publishers Weekly praised the book, saying, “Adams' searingly introspective autobiography reveals the workings of a brilliant musical mind responsible for some of contemporary America's most inventive and original music.” Another reviewer noted that, “Adams writes candidly of his compositions and those of his contemporaries in language accessible to the lay reader.” Monday, November 12: Dinner with Lenny: The Last Long Conversation with Leonard Bernstein by Jonathan Cott. Leonard Bernstein was the first American-born-and-trained conductor of the New York Philharmonic and made his spectacular, unrehearsed debut from the podium in 1943. Not only an historic and celebrated conductor, Bernstein was also a pianist, composer, lecturer, and teacher – he did all with unforgettable élan. He is without a doubt the reigning American classical-music giant and genius of the 20th-century. Who among the baby-boom generation, for instance, does not cherish some memories of his 14 years of televised Young People’s Concerts? This series, launched in 1958, won every award for educational television there was to be had. Says reviewer Ray Olson of this volume, “Music and the love that informs it and animates its performance are the great themes of this talk that scarcely touches anything nonmusical.” (Nota bene: There is no abridged version of this book, contrary to some misinformation book buyers may see online.)
