Hengwrt Gallery, until 8.12.18 Whether it’s your first visit, or you’ve been here before, you’re assured of a warm welcome. The National Library of Wales acquired an initial tranche of manuscripts from Mostyn Hall, All our exhibitions are free and families are welcome. Flintshire in 1918. To mark the centenary of this notable acquisition, the Library are showcasing some of its most valuable Mostyn treasures this season, side-by-side with a few choice items which are still retained at Mostyn Hall. This is a rare opportunity to view items which are seldom seen by the public, including the Silver Harp of the Caerwys Eisteddfodau of 1523 and 1567 – Wales’ earliest eisteddfod trophy, and watercolours by Flintshire-based artist Moses Griffith (1747–1819). #Mostyn100 Image: NLW MS 3026 p.26 Jack Lowe - The Lifeboat Station Project Upper Central Hall, until 09.03.19 A unique selection of images of Welsh lifeboat stations which form part of Jack’s mission to photograph the 238 RNLI lifeboat stations around the UK and Ireland. The photographs are produced using Wet Plate Collodion, a Victorian process that captures stunning images on glass. There are many questions which can now be answered: Who were the suspected witches? What were they accused of? Who were the accusers? What happened to the suspects? The talk on Hallowe’en night draws on the National Library’s magnificent Court of Great Sessions archive. The evidence is now published in a new book by Richard Suggett, Welsh Witches: Narratives of Witchcraft and Magic from Sixteenth - and Seventeenth-century Wales (Atramentous Press, 2018). Ben Rees After winning the 1945 General Election, Clement Attlee decided to choose Aneurin Bevan, one of his harshest critics, as Minister of Health. Although he had never taken any responsibility in Government or Opposition, he became one of the most successful Cabinet ministers. This lecture will trace his relationship with the Tredegar Medical Aid Society which gave him a socialist vision to create a National Health Service.
