Types of Student Accommodation ‐ Furnished rooms
This document will inform you on the different types of student accommodation available. All rooms
offered in this document are fully furnished. With this document we will guide you in choosing the right
accommodation for you. First, we give you some criteria to think about (page 1‐3). Secondly, we will show
you pictures of the rooms, the prices and, if available, a link to a video in which students show their room.

VUNET OPTIONS
In VUnet you will need select a top 3. In the description below you will see specified which type of
accommodation is available for which type of student. You can recognize the options by the housing
corporations name. For instance the DUWO Short Stay rooms in VUnet are called ‘DUWO: all properties
short stay furnished’. So for DUWO Short Stay rooms you cannot book a specific location yet via VUnet, this
will be possible in a later stage in the process.
BUDGET
The price of accommodation varies between €340 and € 900 per month. Utilities (water/ electricity/
internet) are included in the price. When you choose a room with a low rent, you will have to share your
facilities (kitchen and/or bathroom). A flexible attitude is desirable when sharing a bathroom and/ or
kitchen.
SOCIAL
In case you would like to meet many students, have dinners and/or drinks together, we advise you to
choose for a room with a shared kitchen and/or bathroom. If you are more reserved and if it is important
to you to be by yourself, we suggest to select a private, self‐contained room.
FACILITIES
As a student in the Netherlands, it is very common to have your own bedroom while sharing your facilities
(kitchen and/or bathroom). We have a wide range of options available in terms of shared facilities. Below
your can find a quick overview (when facilities are shared, the number in the figure below depicts the total
number, including yourself).

LOCATION
We have student accommodation available in different locations in the Amsterdam region. Although you
might be dreaming of living in the city center with its canals and tall houses, you may wish to reconsider
since it is mostly wealthy Dutch people or tourists staying there. In contrast to the city center, Uilenstede is
located in a very green area, in between two parks and close to the Amsterdam forest. Eerste
Ringdijkstraat is located in genuine Amsterdam area; mixed population and close to a supermarket and
public transport. Bijlmer Towers is located in the East, close to public transport hub Amstel station.
You will easily find out more about the different locations by using Google Maps. Just a quick overview in

STATE OF THE BUILDING
Some students prefer a modern, clean and fresh building, if this is the case, we advise you to choose for
accommodation at the following locations: Hotel Jansen or The Student Hotel. For the buildings at
Uilenstede and Bijlmer Towers it is important to note that they were built in the seventies. It is old
fashioned and outdated and suitable for students who are looking for budget accommodation.
COUPLES
We have very limited rooms available for couples. The couples rooms are all part of DUWO Short Stay and
are located at Eerste Ringdijkstraat. We will assign couples accommodation also on first come first serve
basis determined by the application date. You will need to let us know via studentaccommodation@vu.nl
that you want to book a couples room.
So, based on these criteria and your priorities, you should be able to decide which room will meet your

O BIJLMER TOWERS
Starting fall semester of coming academic year, a new type of accommodation will be added to our housing
selection. 150 Student rooms will be made available only for exchange students at Bijlmer Towers. The
towers have quite a colorful history, as they served as a prison up until last year. Nowadays, crime rates in
the Netherlands are dropping, and the remaining detention facilities are being re‐located to areas outside
of city centers. This gives you the opportunity to stay in an unconventional location, with the benefits of
being well connected to our university campus ánd the city center. The rooms are centered around a
pavilion and there are many opportunities to meet up with each other in the spacious hallways. As the
towers still have a distinctive prison‐like look and feel, we suggest this type of accommodation for the
social and adventurous kind of student.

O THE STUDENT HOTEL
For the first semester we have reserved rooms at The Student Hotel Amsterdam‐West. The Student Hotel
offers fully‐serviced, state‐of‐the‐art accommodation just as if you were staying in a hotel. This includes: A
personal bike, cleaning and change of bed‐linen, 24 hours reception & security and use of the gym, study
room, game room, library and other common areas. Optional services: Meal plan, room cleaning service,
bed linen, kitchen utensils sets. The room reserved for you is a ‘Standard room’.

Hotel Jansen is an all‐inclusive Short Stay Hotel for students and young proffessionals. We have arranged a
special deal for the upcoming semester: A room at Hotel Jansen from August till end of December/January
for €775 per month. Extra fees: €200 Administration costs. This includes a Linen pack. Optional services:
Room pack, Cleaning service, Kitchen pack, Laundromat.

O OUTGOING EXCHANGE ROOM Just like you, students from Vrije Universiteit are going abroad for their studies. Some of them will leave their room and are willing to sublet their room to an incoming exchange student for 1 semester. This is a unique opportunity to live just like a local, in a room from a VU student. This can be a room in a student complex or student house . If this type of accommodation is available for you, the International Office will assign you a room and bring you into contact with the student subletting the room. You will have to make all the arrangements (regarding arrival, rent payment, etc) with the student yourself. The rent for rooms may vary from €350 to €750 per month. Often, one month's rent must be paid in advance as a deposit. The deposit will be returned to you at the end of your stay if the room is found to be in a satisfactory condition, and all bills have been paid. The International Office will do its utmost to find a good match between the incoming and outgoing student. In case you would like to meet fellow Dutch students, this would be a good option for you!
