The Impact of COVID-19: What Happens Next? @sparqs_Scotland #sparqsNEON
Where did this information come from? • Student Officers • National Education Officers’ Network (NEON) • COVID-19 All-Officer Catch Ups • Students • COVID-19 National Events • PGR Students, Student Parents & Carers, Apprentices, and Healthcare Students @sparqs_Scotland #sparqsNEON
Key Topics @sparqs_Scotland #sparqsNEON
Assessment • In some cases the pandemic has led to a ‘bunching’ of assessments, particularly in practical courses. • Some students are now being asked to complete practical assessments in-person after a year online. • Students on some practical courses feel concerned about having little or no portfolio work to take with them into the workplace in order to demonstrate their skills and ability. @sparqs_Scotland #sparqsNEON
Curriculum • For some students, completing placements and significant work-based learning components has not been possible. • Students on performance-based courses have struggled with the lack of opportunity to work on in- person, live events. • Students have been impressed by innovative use of digital opportunities to allow students to complete their curriculum. @sparqs_Scotland #sparqsNEON
Learning and Teaching Process • Some students have enjoyed the flexibility that learning online has allowed them, whilst others have found the move more challenging. • Some students feel that their learning had been more ‘passive’. Concerns remain about how to balance the desire for engagement with the need to allow students to choose whether to show their home environments. • Looking forward, students have emphasised the need for flexible approaches, as students studying on-campus may suddenly need to self-isolate or there may be further lockdowns. Any learning and teaching processes in the next academic year will therefore need to remain agile. @sparqs_Scotland #sparqsNEON
Student Progression and Achievement • Some students remain concerned about whether they will be able to complete their courses and progress on to the next year of study or to a new course. • Most students will have had a large period of time away from in-person academic study. There is a need to support students as they move from online teaching back to in-person delivery. Officers recommended introducing additional support for softer skills development, such as study skills, writing essays and exam preparation. @sparqs_Scotland #sparqsNEON
Student Progression and Achievement • Some report a lack of confidence in their skill level and a feeling of ‘imposter syndrome’ over the next stage of their academic journey. • Some students who are planning to go into the workplace also report feeling that there are gaps in their knowledge/skills or worry that employers will perceive them as being less competent and proficient than previous cohorts. @sparqs_Scotland #sparqsNEON
Discussion • What student learning experience issues are still outstanding from this year? • What key topics will need to be in focus for institutions and students’ associations as we move into the 2021/22 academic year? • Specifically regarding the theme of transitions, is this an area of focus for you within your institution/association? If so, what initiatives are you considering putting in place to support students? @sparqs_Scotland #sparqsNEON

SFC Review Megan Brown, Development Consultant, sparqs @sparqs_Scotland #sparqsNEON
Background • In light of the pandemic, Scottish Ministers invited SFC to undertake a review of how to secure the ‘coherent provision and sustainability’ of colleges and universities. • There have been two phases of the review so far and we are now entering the third (and final) stage of the review. @sparqs_Scotland #sparqsNEON
The direction of the review Priorities have been grouped under three areas: • Emergency Years • Ongoing Policy Development • Developing Future Frameworks @sparqs_Scotland #sparqsNEON
Student Engagement in the Review • sparqs and NUS Scotland have continued to meet regularly with SFC through the Student Engagement Advisory Group (SEAG). • sparqs have created a second SFC Review briefing note for student officers. This briefing note follows on from the first briefing note sent to student officers in December 2020. • sparqs and NUS Scotland will continue to update and engage with officers on the review at NEON and All- Officer Catch Ups. @sparqs_Scotland #sparqsNEON
Student Representation on Review Groups Stakeholder Reference Groups: • The Accountability Framework • The Funding Model • Research and Innovation Student Roundtable on ‘how the “digital revolution” is supported for learners @sparqs_Scotland #sparqsNEON
What next? • The SFC is collating all of the feedback collected so far. • Recommendations will be made to ministers at the end of June. • sparqs is exploring how we can continue to engage students in the review, including through sessions at That’s Quality. • SFC remain interested in gathering a picture of students’ views on the future use of digital in learning and teaching. @sparqs_Scotland #sparqsNEON
