BAILEY BRIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT Student Athlete Handbook Welcome to Bailey Bridge Middle School. There are 7 interscholastic athletic teams offered in 5 sports for the more serious minded and dedicated athletes. We have an outstanding staff that is committed to excellence in academics and athletics. Bailey Bridge coaches seek to provide each athlete the opportunity to develop his or her individual talents to the fullest within the framework of the team. The welfare of each student athlete and the rules of good sportsmanship are of primary concern in the daily conduct of our athletic program. The purpose of this handbook is to provide you with some of the major rules and regulations under which we operate and to provide you with other useful information concerning your participation in the athletic program. Parents and student athletes - please read this handbook carefully and electronically sign the acknowledgement form listed on the last page. This must be on file with the completed student athlete’s VHSL Physical Examination Form and Concussion Form before participation is permitted. The Bailey Bridge Middle School Athletic Department operates under the auspices of the Middle School Athletic Manual created by the Middle School Athletic Council. Most Often Asked Questions Q: How do we find out about try-out dates, contest schedules, etc.? A: BBMS will make announcements regarding the sports. Listen carefully to morning announcements and announcements made during lunch. Also, please visit the BBMS website for athletic information. Q: How big of a commitment is participating in interscholastic athletics? A: BIG! Teams will practice or compete each day. You can count on a 5 day a week commitment. Q: If my son or daughter is ill and at home during the day can he/she come to school just for practice or a game? A: No. If a student is too ill to come to school, then it is not appropriate for him/her to be at practice or a competition. Q: If my son or daughter is injured and cannot participate, is he/she expected to be at practice/contests? A: Yes. They are a part of the team. There is always something to be learned from attending, and though injured, the student has a role and responsibility with the team. Q: Who do I contact if I have any questions? A: Contact the coach for specific sport questions. Contact the Athletic Director, Colin Innes Student Athlete Handbook Revised September 2018 Page 2

Any student who strikes an opponent, coach or spectator during or following an athletic contest may be declared ineligible for a specified period of time, up to one year, depending on the seriousness of the act. ● Any player ejected from a contest for unsportsmanlike conduct shall be ineligible for the team’s next contest. A player ejected for fighting shall be ineligible for the team’s next two contests. ● Any student, or his/her parents, who give false information, either written or verbal, that affects his/her eligibility, shall become ineligible at any middle school for a period of one year. BBMS Athletic Department Regulations and Policies School Attendance: All athletes must attend school for at least two consecutive blocks of the day to be able to play or practice that day. Any athlete arriving to school after the start of the third block or leaves before the second block will not be allowed to practice or play. The above statement pertains to illness. There are exceptions which must be approved by the administration. Transportation: If transportation for an athletic event is provided by the school, all team members must ride with the team both to and from the contest. Exceptions to this are provided for in the case of an emergency. Athletes may ride home with their parents if a parent signature is obtained at the site. Additionally, all parents/guardians must arrange for the student-athlete to be picked up no later than 15 minutes after the end of designated practice time. Failure to be picked up three times after a practice or game will result in automatic dismissal from the team. Equipment: Each athlete will be responsible for all equipment that is issued to him/her by the school. No athletic awards will be issued, nor will the athlete be able to participate in another sport, if equipment is not turned in. Athletes will be charged for all equipment that is not returned or that is damaged through negligence or abuse. Discipline: In the event an athlete is assigned in-school detention, administrative detention, or out-of-school suspension, he/she may not participate in practice or contest that day. Student-athletes assigned to detention for part of the day will need to meet with the Athletic Director to determine eligibility for the practice/contest.
