Issue # 10 JUN 2018 “Linking Learning to Life” As June arrives we turn our attention to Grade 8 and Kindergarten graduations. School staff are working hard to make these celebrations special for our students and their families. These celebrations are a time to reflect upon all the hard work that students have put forth and celebrate the successes that they have earned along the way. Special thanks to our SCC for their financial support of the grade 8 grad. On Wednesday June 13th at 1 pm a photographer from Lifetouch will be coming to Lakewoods to take a photograph of the entire school. We are asking students to wear Blue, Green or White on this day. Our Volunteer Tea will be at 1:30 pm in the library on that day. All volunteers and any- one interested in volunteering is welcome to join us. Boomerang Lunch The Durham District School Board encourages our schools to reduce food and food-related waste by imple- menting a waste-free or boomerang lunch program. This summer get your items ready for September! Waste-free lunch contains no throwaway packaging and produces no food waste. Food and drinks are packed in reusable containers within a reusable lunchbag. This allows leftover food and drink to be saved for later. Boomerang lunch means that any uneaten food and any waste material produced is returned home and is not added to the schools waste collection. All items are to be placed in the resealable container to ensure that lunch bags/backpacks/lockers remain clean! Label your reusable containers Use reseal able drink containers to avoid waste and allow flexibility Cut your fruit and vegetables for lunch and keep leftovers in container for snacks Pack and refrigerate lunches the night before School Community Council Upcoming FREEZIE Fridays. Safe Arrival Update for 2018-2019 School Year At the Durham District School Board, one of our greatest priorities is ensuring that all our students arrive safely to school each day. In 2016, Safe Arrival was implemented with our parent community. The system allowed parents to report their child’s absence quickly and conveniently. The Durham District School Board is moving to the latest release of the Safe Arrival software for next school year. The new absence reporting system, SchoolMessenger, will start on the first day of the 2018-2019 school year. Information will be emailed to parents this summer with instructions on how to create a new account and download the mobile app (available for Android and iOS). This system change requires Parents to create NEW accounts to report absences online. Please note: Parents can continue to report absences through the automated telephone system by dialing 1-844-350-2646 without creating an account. Summer School—Getting Ready for High School This program is open to all students entering grade 9 in Fall 2018 and provides them with a brief introduction to the grade 9 English and mathematics curriculum, as well as study skills, time management, and steps to success. The program also allows students to become familiar with their new school and prepares them for the transition from elementary school to second- ary school. It is especially helpful for students who are experiencing some anxiety related to the upcoming transition. The program runs Monday August 20, 2018 to Thursday August 23, 2018 from 8:30 am to 1:30pm @ GL Roberts CVI. www.dce.ca/programs/summerschool/gettingreadyforhighschool/pages The Cypher Conference @ Durham College, May 24 2018 On May 24th, Mr. Yellapa escorted some Grade 8 Boys to the the Black Male Empowerment Confer- ence at Durham College. The boys learned about leadership and listened to strong and inspirational speakers. The boys said they learned, “There is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs!” Great learning boys! Lakewoods School Rules Rules help us know what to do and how to act with each other. The rules that we have in place at Lakewoods also help to ensure student safety throughout the day. Our school rules are clearly outline in our Code of Conduct that can be found in the front of every agenda. Please take time to review the rules with your child. Regular reminders from home about the importance of following school rules make for more positive and successful interactions with other students, staff and community members. Zones of Regulation Self -Regulation continues to be a big focus for us here at Lakewoods. Students were taught about the different zones and which zone they need to be in to be ready to learn. We will continue to work with the different strategies over the coming months to enable students to be better able to self-regulate their emotions.
