MASTER’s CORNER Brethren, The life of the Lodge has slowly been returning to something approaching normalcy in the last few months. It’s hard to believe we’re already headed into the fall and there’s only a little more than three months left in the year. We have a busy fall ahead, as summarized in the last Trestle Board. This September, we will be having our annual chili cookoff at stated, which will also be our Past Masters’ night. The following day, September 11th, the Wardens and I are traveling to Norfolk Lodge No. 1 for the Grand Lodge Reunion Table Lodge…I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the 20th Anniversary of the terrorist attacks of that date, September 11, 2001, our brave troops who kept evil at bay for the past 20 years—among them many Brethren and members of our Lodge—and those left behind in Afghanistan. Today our world remains as dangerous as ever before, and we need the great teachings of our Fraternity more than ever before. September 18th will be a busy day. The Kinsale Area Ritual School is that day, and that evening at 6pm will be our Annual Table Lodge (see enclosed ad for details). The following day is the baseball game that has been organized by our own Rainbow Girls. Lastly, on Friday, September 24 th, will be the FMMA Golf Tournament at Meadows Farms Golf Courses in Locust Grove. Being owners of a historic Masonic Temple and Cemetery brings many funding challenges. We’re having to put significant work into the air conditioning system and are still evaluating the condition of the commercial roof. In addition to the Golf Tournament, we’re therefore going to hold a Sportsman’s Raffle this fall, with a drawing at the December stated. Looking ahead, we’re planning an evening out for our widows at Riverside Dinner Theatre in October or November, and we’re receiving the Grand Master at the annual meeting commemorating the initiation of Ill. Bro. George Washington on Monday, November 1st. Finally, the Lodge is planning to participate once again the Fredericksburg Christmas parade on December 4th. All bodies, particularly the youth, are invited to march alongside the Lodge. Please reach out to our Jr. Deacon, Bro. Mike Perry, who is coordinating. As you can see, we have a busy fall ahead. We had a great turnout for our pig roast on August 13th. Congratulations to the all-time champion of our Hawaiian shirt contest, Right Worshipful Bruce “Ziggy” Hollmann, on winning a Table Lodge ticket. The dues situation will be addressed in a separate correspondence. We plan to discuss this and a proposed resolution at the September stated meeting. As we move into the fall, I hope you will consider joining us for some of our upcoming meetings and events. The time has come to start putting this pandemic behind us and resume rebuilding our great Temple of Living Stones.
SECRETARY’s CORNER Just a reminder to those who have not paid your dues….Did you know that without a current dues card you can not sit in Lodge? If you are struggling to get your dues paid please let us know and arrangements can be made. FROM THE ARCHIVES September 1, 1752, marked the date of the earliest known meeting of the Lodge at Fredericksburgh (note original spelling). This has traditionally been described as ‘the first extant recorded meeting.’ Contrary to certain views, there is nothing in the Minutes of that meeting to suggest the constitution of a new Lodge, election of officers, or any other indication of being the date of its founding. How long it may have existed prior to this date is a matter of speculation. It is noted that the pages were loose and only bound into their current volume by Masons at the Government Printing Office in 1926. There are many theories of the Lodge’s origin, and this remains an area of fertile research.
Shown above is the cover of the Old Minute Book, which is housed at the Lodge (at left) and the page on which is recorded this earliest known meeting (at right). You will notice the record of Ill. Bro. Washington being initiated and passed starting about halfway down the page. COMMUNITY SERVICE The Lodge hosted its first community meal in well over a year on August 31, 2021. This first meal was done in tandem with Tabernacle United Methodist Church. Going forward, we look to welcome the meals resuming on the second Tuesdays of the month when enough participating churches resume their in-person meals. The Lodge itself will take on preparing the meals on months with a fifth Tuesday (next one will be on November 30th). We are also still pursuing participating in a Habitat for Humanity project. Reminder about the FMMA Golf Tournament for 2021, to be held on Friday, September 24, 2021, at Meadows Farms. Registration is now open at the website below. Website: FMMA Annual Golf Tournament (perfectgolfevent.com) Please consider sponsoring a hole, donating prizes, or registering a foursome. The Lodge Building and Cemetery are both in need of repair, so please consider helping out as well as enjoying a great day of fun and fellowship.
