It was great to see so many different members of our community together once again enjoying some great food, drinks and live music. LIBERATION 77 Another sense of normality returning was the return of the much-loved Liberation events. A packed Town Hall for both the Liberation Day Breakfast and Afternoon Tea were the tribute to how much people have missed being together, and there was something incredibly moving about meeting so many Islanders who were here during the Occupation. It was great that the Parish was able to support the new ‘Lib in the Square’ event in the Royal Square, as well as Liberation becoming something for young people to look forward to as well. Due to the fact that the Island enjoyed a Royal visit for Liberation, the Earl nominate parishioners who were in Jersey and Countess of Wessex, there was an at the time of the Occupation to meet opportunity for all of the parishes to Prince Edward and Sophie. 06 | | JUNE 2022 PARISH NEWS HISTORIC ST HELIER, GERAINT JENNINGS: IT'S A WHITEWASH! Although the Parish Church of Saint Helier is now situated in the centre of Town, it was founded at the water's edge, with a direct view to the rocky islets where Elizabeth Castle now is. Parishioners would have been able to look across to the Hermitage, site of Helier's life in Jersey and martyrdom, and the Abbey, but the monastic services there would only have been accessible at low tide. The Parish Church therefore stood on the shore, as the most convenient place to worship, and was a prominent feature of the coastline of the bay. Before reclamation and the growth of Town around it, the church was also used as a navigation mark to help ships and boats negotiate the difficult entry to Saint Helier. But by the early 19th century The Assembly rejected the proposition. things were changing as Town grew But a few years later, when Saint Matthew's both inland and out into the tidal zone.
