Message from the President Welcome to the 2021 CCA Confluence Conference and our opportunity to highlight the exemplary academic work of our amazing students. Students - Congratulations to all of you for living the theme of the conference this past year. You have persisted! You have prevailed! And you are about to provoke! This cross disciplinary conference will showcase the work of CCA students in every pathway and across all disciplines at the college. It will highlight the ways that our students are realizing their potential; and that is no small feat in a year of constant challenge, uncertainty and disruption. Many thanks to all of the faculty and instructors who have mentored, supported, engaged and challenged these students on their academic journeys. You have believed in them and this conference is evidence that they also believe in themselves. This coming together, this confluence of learning, growth, confidence, and achievement is a result of your collective efforts and hard work. So, students, we are participating today to learn from you and to celebrate your scholarship and your success. Thanks for taking your own learning up a notch – and for being willing to share it with others. That is what creates a community of scholars and it’s one of the best aspects of higher education. Enjoy the conference! Dr. Betsy Oudenhoven 2

Particular emphasis was given to the Court’s tendency to either affirm or reverse the lower courts’ rulings; statutes, codes, and precedence found to play a determinative role in the court’s opinions; and any areas Christopher Ceglia of water law found to be particularly Law and Water subject to interpretation and litigation.” 3
“Colorado, Utah, and Nebraska voters have spoken and the exception or punishment clause have been removed from their constitution. This is a start, but the goal is simple, we need more citizens and politicians actively working to eliminate the disparities of Black and Brown people and repeal and replace the U.S. Constitution 13th Amendment.” Delina Lewis Amend the 13th “Acute stress can cause an increase in heart rate and stronger contractions of the heart muscles and hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. Also, the blood vessels that direct blood to the large muscles and the heart dilate, thus elevating blood pressure (APA, 2020). Experiencing this over long periods of time can take a toll on the body and increase the risk for hypertension, heart Taylor Ramirez attack, or stroke (APA, 2020).” The Biology of Stress 4
“When you deviate from the norm, it’s easy to feel as if society doesn’t have a place for you and like you don’t belong. Therefore, as a society, we need to make more of an effort to include women who do not have children. Whether they are childfree, childless, or temporarily childless, having a support group, or even just someone who understands that they have more to contribute than their wombs, could make the world of a difference to them. We need to get past Natalia Rincon thinking that a woman’s sole purpose The Strain of an Unfulfilled is to be a mother and instead, reinforce Gender Role the belief that a life without children is viable and that it can be a happy one, even if that is not what we’ve chosen.” “We connect different people, times, and places with sound. Throughout our day different sounds will come and go, but some waves will hold a special place in us. Always remember to listen.” Reid Sanders & Moses Herman The Ear 5
“The cardinal sin in our perception of homelessness, however, lies not in our perceptions but in how we generalize those ideas to an entire population. While modern society has begun— through the Civil Rights movement, Gay Rights movement, Black Lives Matter, and #metoo—to push back on the notion that all people of a specific group experience the world in the same way, we fail to apply these ideals to our homeless peers. We consider “homelessness” as a problem that can Burch Godwin be grouped and solved as one unit, Honors Project on rather than stratifying the problem to Homelessness uncover categorical differences.” 6
