BARCOO BANTER JANUARY 2021 | VOLUME 3 BARCOO SHIRE’S AUSTRALIA DAY CITIZEN OF THE YEAR 2021 Australia Day was celebrated across the shire with a range of sports, novelty events, BBQs, games and prizes in Windorah, Jundah and Stonehenge. Many thanks to the community groups and individuals who worked to make the events a success. Council was pleased to support the events financially, and to provide some promotional materials and memorabilia. This year’s theme for Australia Day was reflect, respect and celebrate. Across the country, and in our shire too, we paid respect to the selfless and courageous service of frontline workers and volunteers who have helped us through the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and natural disasters. In the Barcoo Shire, we recognise a story which has particularly shone out, a person who has strengthened our community during such challenges. The Barcoo Shire’s Australia Day Citizen of the Year for 2021 is Corey Kempthorne, Principal of Stonehenge State School. Corey was presented with his award on Australia Day by Cr Roger Batt at Stonehenge. Corey’s story illustrates the Australian spirit of giving one’s best, determination, looking out for others, taking initiative and fostering teamwork. Recently, the school was in danger of closing due to a lack of enrolments. Corey put his all into promoting the school and building relationships with local families. As a result, he was able to secure more enrolments from students on neighbouring properties. He made it possible for these students to enrol at the school by organising a daily school bus. This past year Stonehenge School has had a total of 11 students. This is a significant increase from the anticipated number, and the highest number of enrolments at Stonehenge for many years. His dedication has had a significant impact on the students, staff, families and the community. Students and parents have formed friendships and bonds with one another and there has been increased community participation. In addition, the school has never looked better due to the improvements Corey has initiated, creating a sense of pride in the school. Corey has gained the respect of students, staff and families. He puts no less than 100% into everything he strives to achieve for the school. Every day the students are watching and learning from their teacher as he displays this invaluable quality. A wonderful Australian story. . Congratulations Corey! Barcoo Shire Australia Day Award recipient Corey Kempthorne and Cr Roger Batt PAGE 6
BARCOO BANTER JANUARY 2021 | VOLUME 3 AUSTRALIA DAY WINDORAH The Windorah community celebrated this Australia Day with a Meet and Greet at the Tennis Courts. The Windorah Development Board's new inflatable waterslide was a big hit with the kids young and old, though the policeman may have broken his wife's rib in an overenthusiastic attempt. Sixty people attended throughout the afternoon, with many taking to the cricket pitch to relive their glory days. Brogan Geiger was best on field, while Nurse 'Warnie' Shelley produced some solid form. Umpiring the proceedings on the field was Mrs Narelle Boland from Charleville. It was great to welcome families from Mt Leonard, Tenham and Raymore stations. Australian trivia kicked in before the BBQ (thanks Necie!) and the prize was narrowly taken out by the APA team. Bingo (thanks Victoria!) was held with ice cream. The kids all went home with a tattoo, face paint and sore legs! Thanks to the community for another great day out! Dads on patrol! Amanda, Rellie, Kate, Rob and kids having a ball! Cricket match in full swing! Above: Joe Tully goes for a big hit! Winning trivia team! Right: Victoria Edwards hosts Trivia PAGE 7
BARCOO BANTER JANUARY 2021 | VOLUME 3 AUSTRALIA DAY GOLF REPORT - WINDORAH A light breeze and warm conditions presented for the inaugural Australia Day Golf Day at Windorah. Rob Edwards led the charge with a handicap of right handed clubs, for a left handed player, and Tony Geiger hadn’t played since he was a young single bloke. Mr Patrick Collins, course veteran, has been out of the game for “at least 20 years” but performed amazingly well for an old fella. Highlights on the difficult, often overgrown course, included Patty and Tony’s par on the fourth. Had there been a scorecard, George Walker would have taken out the title, though may have been seen leaving early as his performance faded on the last hole. Will Geiger, 6 years old, thought he was signing up to putt putt but persisted with the 6 hole course and is still waiting for his prize at the end. Harry came along for the ride too, and enjoyed laughing at the antics. An excellent morning was had by all, and we are looking forward to our next golfing outing when the weather cools. A big thank you to Rob Edwards for organising the morning. Tony Geiger George Walker Paddy Collins The golf crew. L-R Paddy Collins, Tony Geiger, Will Geiger, Harry Lock and Rob Edwards. PAGE 8
