www. t hu r gar to n. o rg.u k Thurgarton People This is the 51st edition of Thurgarton People…… ……which means that I forgot to mark the occasion of the 50th one! Edition 46 was only 4 pages long, just over a year ago and was sent out primarily to highlight the formation of TAAC at the start of the first lockdown; therefore, I’m counting this one as the “proper” 50th edition. Well done to all who have contributed over the years and in particular to Linda Morgan and Toria Parker who moulded it into it’s current format with David Waine all those years ago. It is with great sadness that the death of David was announced on 24 January. David had always been involved in TP from it’s new beginnings, bringing his wisdom and experience from many years as a journalist to our village magazine. Latterly he took over the role of treasurer and always helped me with editing and different ways of reporting news; he was incredibly encouraging and supportive and I will miss his frequent help and advice and of course, his lovely smile. David Waine of Thurston House, Thurgarton sadly passed away on Sunday David Waine 1944-2021 24 January at Kings Mill Hospital in Mansfield. His death was unexpected yet, due to the wonderful dedication and care of friends, nurses, and doctors he left us peacefully. When David and his wife, Liz, moved to the East Midlands in 2005, David This piece was written for was determined to live in Thurgarton. He recognised the sense of TP by Nicky, David and Liz’s community enjoyed by the residents and wanted to reconnect with life in a daughter friendly village. David wished to help enhance and promote the values of the supportive, cohesive community he had experienced as a child after the Second World War. Having settled into their home, David quickly joined the Parish Council. He also became a valuable member of the Thurgarton communication group which oversees the village email service, the ‘Thurgarton People’ magazine and the community website. His professional journalistic background made these ventures a natural choice and, indeed, he helped to sustain the sense of community that he first spotted in Thurgarton. As a family, we would like to thank the people of Thurgarton for all their love, help and messages of support at this time. We hope that David will be remembered by the community as a kind, caring man, with a lovely smile who always strove to do right in a reassuring and calm manner. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He will be sadly missed. Due to the pandemic David’s funeral will be held privately at the family home on the 24 February. After a small family service David will be taken to Gedling crematorium. The family hope that those who would like to pay their last respects might join them along Southwell Road at approximately 11am, when the hearse will travel slowly through the village. More People What’s keeping us busy in lockdown…. TAKE THE LIBERTY - THAT’s NOT AN INSTRUCTION TaketheLiberty is the name of my little shop on Etsy. In case you haven’t heard ETSY is a global on line market place where people come together to make, sell, buy and collect unique items. It was founded in June 2005 in Brooklyn, New York. I have been selling on Etsy since 2018 and at the time of writing I have made 87 sales with 5* reviews so you see I am very much a bijou enterprise. More of a hobby not a business. I only ever use Liberty Tana Lawn and my very favourite place to visit is Liberty on Great Marlborough Street in London. I can stroll around their fabric department for hours so I always make sure I go alone. Whilst travelling the plains of East Africa in the 1920s Liberty’s buyer William Hayes Dorell discovered some curious cotton fibres close to Lake Tana in Ethiopia. Over 100 years on Tana Lawn has come to be recognised as a unique part of the Liberty heritage. The bolts of fabric in Liberty’s London store are a product of a bespoke production process, hand drawn by the in- house design team and screen printed in a factory near Lake Como. My first love using Tana Lawn has always been making handkerchiefs. I can still remember my mother calling after me (never shouting) when I left the house to ensure that I had a clean hanky. Tissues weren’t allowed and still aren’t mainly because I tend to leave hankies in pockets. They don’t make a mess but tissues do! One of my eldest friends, Delphine, we started drinking together in the Salutation Nottingham when we were 16, worked on the handkerchief counter at Jessops, the old John Lewis Store on King Street in Nottingham so I bought a hanky when her supervisor was hanging around so we could have a chat. I built up quite a collection. At the very start of the first lockdown I jumped on the band waggon and started making face masks but there are so many different designs, mass produced and so much cheaper on the market that I now only make for friends and family. When I first started selling on Etsy I needed a logo and packaging so who better to ask than a 10 year old. My granddaughter Eva, designed and ordered my stickers. I gave her a budget of £20. 1,000 stamp sized stickers with ‘Take the Liberty’ on duly arrived. I make, hankies, scarves, handcrafted cards with hankies inside, tea cosies and anything else that takes my fancy. My little business has kept me sane during this horrible pandemic and on a really bad day with all the depressing news I can just shut myself away and stroke my beautiful fabrics. Parish Council Parish Council update Thurgarton Parish Council Meeting 28th January update Precept…. is the tax that we all pay as a contribution to Thurgarton Parish through our Council Tax. Next year, 2021/22, after careful consideration of the budget for this year and next, it was decided to increase the precept by 15%. The increase was deemed necessary to add to the disposable income to be spent on the Parish for additional Village maintenance costs. This year the Parish Council received a total precept of £9125 and next year this will be increased to £10,495. This equates approximately to an increase in each village household from £42p.a. last year up to £48p.a. next year. This makes the monthly precept charge, on average, approximately £4 per household. Near Flooding in Thurgarton…. with so much rain having fallen lately, and the fields around the village being completely waterlogged, we have had a few close calls recently. The monitor in the Beck has, once again, proved to be invaluable, providing water level information on the Thurgarton web site for all to easily see, whatever the weather; and sending SMS messages to those who pay for the Beck monitor alarm service so that even in the middle of the night a text will let you know when the Beck has started to rise, and again when it has reached dangerous levels. Thurgarton Emergency Plan (TEP) …. we are planning a complete overhaul of the process, probably using more technology like WhatsApp groups rather than having to telephone individuals. For the TEP to work well we also need more volunteers, so please do volunteer to join the TEP team, there are a variety of roles that might suit you and will be relevant to all ages and all levels of fitness. 40 mph Consultation.... you may have noticed the consultation letter that was sent by email last recently, this was a public advert requesting parishioners give their feedback to proposed changes in speed limits by February 19th. Thurgarton Parish Council, in response to speeding issues in the village, have been working with Notts County Council (NCC) Highways or Via over the last few years. The result is the proposal to reduce the speed limit from 60 mph / 50mph to 40mph on the 3 entry roads into Thurgarton – Nottingham Rd, Southwell Rd and Bleasby Rd. The proposed 40mph speed limit will act as a buffer, encouraging drivers to reduce their speed before encountering the 30mph speed limit at the boundaries to the village. Thanks are extended to Charles Day and Steve Edkins, 2 retired Parish Councillors who had worked on this means of reducing speeding in the village, which has been an important issue and key objective for the village for some years. (see below the advert posted in the village and on email) Strategy Meeting…. was held on 7th December when all Councillors agreed their roles for next year 2021/22 (please see below), discussed the PC objectives for the year, discussed in principle all finance matters including the precept and budgets for each strategic area, and the review of the Neighbourhood Plan, which is due this year as it is 5 years since its inception. Councillor Strategy Roles were agreed as: - • Emergency Measures – Natalie Robinson • Highways / Speeding – Mike Frettsome • Village Hall – David Lewis • Communication – Tina Tsoukatos & Katie Chan • Environment – Denise Bryant • Planning – Roger Foster Objectives for next year are still being worked upon and these will be agreed and published at the February PC meeting. If there are any particular matters that you would wish to see on this list of objectives, then please let me know. Village Hall.... delighted to report that another grant of £7,239 has been secured for Village Hall. Quotations are being sought to update the toilet facilities. Newark and Sherwood District Council (NSDC).... funds are still available for small businesses who have suffered a loss of income due to COVID, please refer to the NSDC website for more details TP 51 : February 2021 to March 2021 7

Date of Next Meeting.... the next meeting of Thurgarton Parish Council will be on Thursday, 25th February at 7.30 pm, this will be a public virtual meeting, members of the public who would like to join the meeting should send their details to clerk@thurgarton.org.uk Tina Tsoukatos, Chair, Thurgarton Parish Council Volunteers needed! Thurgarton Emergency Plan The Thurgarton Emergency Plan (TEP) was established 8 years ago to enable us to be more self-reliant as a village and to ensure the welfare of the people who live in the village and their homes and businesses. The Plan covers all types of emergency - major transport accidents (rail/road/air), severe weather (storm/flooding) and health (disease/flu). We are about to work through an overhaul of the Plan to make sure it is still fit for purpose which includes recruiting new volunteers to join the TEP team. There are a variety of roles that might suit including co- ordinator for a designated area of the village, putting up road signage in event of an emergency or contacting people within the village to make sure the TEP database is up to date. We are also looking for a Base - the role of Base is to be the central communication point of the Plan - they are responsible for communication both with designated co-ordinators within the village as well as external agencies (emergency services, Council), decision making and incident reporting during an emergency. Full training is provided, and all work undertaken has been risk assessed and is COVID safe If you're interested in joining the team or want to help review the plan and it's processes please contact clerk@thurgarton.org.uk Natalie Robinson, Parish Councillor, Emergency Measures, Thurgarton Parish Council TP 51 : February 2021 to March 2021 8

Linda is learning how to make art using ProCreate (really) on an iPad - no paint, no mess, and very little art. - Learn something new: We’ve been researching one British bird each day, just in time for the RSPB Bird Count. We didn’t know that the yellowness of the feathers on a blue tit’s chest depends on the number of yellow-green caterpillars in its diet, nor that the surprising Latin name for the wren family is Troglodyte. Linda has been learning Welsh on Duolingo; the Welsh for a wren is dryw, and troglodyte is - troglodyte. Thanks Linda!! TP 51 : February 2021 to March 2021 12
