Wrangle Parish News published jointly by The parish church of St Mary & St Nicholas and Wrangle Parish Council Editorial & production Pearl Danby 01205 870613 Design & layout Mrs E Arnold 01205 270352 Email: wranglepc@aol.com Items for the parish news need to be sent to wranglepc@aol.com by the 14th of the previous month Well, we’re into spring, hedges and trees are coming into leaf and early blossoms brighten the outlook. The birds are in their best plumage and grass growth is improving, though the frequent frosts and cold north east winds are doing their best to slow it down. The Covid 19 vaccine is being rolled out at an amazing pace and infection rates are coming down. Now, with the lockdown restrictions easing, there is an air of optimism for the approaching summer. All the above is good news but, sadly, tempered by the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip. Our flag on the church is flying at half mast, the first time I can remember. We are hearing a lot, in the many tributes to Prince Philip, about his life and the enormous amount of work and effort he has put into his role as consort to the Queen. He has been a wonderful ambassador with amazing foresight, which we are now learning about. His speeches, some many years ago, regarding the loss of habitats, threats to our wildlife, and changes necessary to put things right were way in advance of the experts’ advice only recently brought to the fore. I am sure that we all, at Wrangle, offer our sincere condolences to Her Majesty the Queen and to all the Royal Family at their sad loss. We all know of people who have benefitted greatly from taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. Now, I saw my first swallow, at the sea bank on 30th March, three more at our lake on 1st April and five there the following day. A single house martin on 5th April – not many flies for them yet! Do let’s be careful and stick to the guidelines. The future is up to everyone. Let us enjoy it wisely. George Danby

People then discovered that life would not be the same again. There is now a new way of life and a new hope. After the restrictions of the Pandemic this season, we are finding that we cannot go back to the old ways but that we can look forward to a better future by discovering new ways to live. Our prime concern is not ourselves but the wellbeing and safety of others. It is interesting that right from the 2nd book in the bible we are encouraged to love one another so that all will go well with the people. That same Ancient maxim is still true day as we discover how to adjust the way we live for a better future. This doesn’t just apply to the pandemic but also to our love and care for the earth and its creatures, the love and care for those we work with and also our friends and family. So as we slowly move forward let us remember to love one another and use our God given creativity to make life better in the future with an eye on some wisdom and experience of the past to help us. God Bless You, Andrew J Higginson

Fly-Tipping – A costly blight on the landscape Witham Fourth District IDB, together with other local IDBs and councils contribute to the £32,000 annual budget of FLYSWAT, a local initiative using Vans and North Sea Camp inmates to collect tipped rubbish. According to Boston Borough Council, compared to June 2019 when there were 68 fly-tips reported, June 2020 saw near 4-fold increase to 254. From March to June 2019 there were 342 incidents whereas the same period in 2020 there were 798, more than double the incidents. This figure has gone up since June 2020 owing to the pandemic and the recent restrictions in place at the local recycling centres. Unfortunately, irresponsible people also dump litter into the local drainage network managed by Witham Fourth IDB, which we recover as it is too dangerous for FlySwat operatives to enter into our drains: I would urge local residents to be aware of this issue, and if you see anyone dumping rubbish or see anything suspicious, please contact the FLYSWAT team at the following email address with relevant information, photographs etc: etc: flyswat@boston.gov.uk Thank you! Peter Bateson Chief Executive
Census 2021 Census population estimates are vital in helping to shape the communities in which we live and work. Billions of pounds are allocated to local authorities every year using census information. It is important that census estimates are accurate, so these funds are allocated where they are needed. To get accurate estimates, we need a good response to the census from all areas and communities. Please be sure to fill out your Census to help our area get the funds we are entitled to. Census officers are out and about helping households who have yet to complete the census. Safety is paramount for us all and all staff have been supplied with PPE and are working within government COVID-19 guidelines. If you do get a knock on the door by one of their officers they will identify themselves as being from the Office for National Statistics and will always carry an official ID badge. If you haven’t already completed your Census you can fill it in now at http://ow.ly/gRFM50Ehs7F For more information, please visit www.census.gov.uk or for any help please call 0800 141 2021
Wrangle (St Mary and St Nicholas Churchyard) Commonwealth War Graves Did you know that the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) are commemorating War Graves week from 21 – 28 May 2021? Did you know that we have 7 war graves in Wrangle’s Churchyard? From WWI we have: Lance Corporal George Saul, 10th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, died 3 June 1918 Private C Walker, West Yorkshire Regiment, died 27 August 1918 Lance Corporal W Walker, Royal Fusiliers, died 9 November 1918 aged 23, Distinguished Conduct Medal, son of Alfred and Eliza Walker, Station Road, Old Leake, born at Wrangle. Sapper John George Simpson, Canadian Railway Troops, died 21 November 1918 aged 19, son of Alfred and Lizzie Simpson of Wrangle. Private Richard Henry Leary, 1st/6th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment, died 29 July 1920, son of Richard and Mary Elizabeth Leary of Wrangle. From WWII we have: Volunteer Cyril Harness, 1st Holland (Boston) Battalion Home Guard, died 18 August 1941 Leading Stoker Benjamin Frank Barber, HMS Ark Royal, Royal Navy, died 17 October 1943 aged 26. Son of Frank and Gertude Barber, Old Leake. Not all war graves are made of traditional Portland stone as some are made from slate or granite. Some have personal inscriptions at the request of the family and others don’t have the traditional headstone as families were able to choose private memorials instead. Many of these headstones are now over 100 years old so are historic monuments. The CWGC has records of casualties and will maintain any CWGC war graves but families remain responsible for private memorials. Where there is no known grave, individuals will be remembered on a memorial. My own great Great Uncle, Serjeant Maurice Gault, 8th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment, who died on 25 Sep 1919, is remembered in the Loos memorial in France. I visited the memorial in 2019 and laid a poppy cross. The names of all those from our village who gave their lives during WWI and WWII are commemorated on the war memorial close to the church. These names are: WWI Eligh Burr, George Clarke, Jonas Clarke, Joseph Cole, George Coupland, William Dawson, William Futter, Basil Hammond, Cyril Harrison, William Henry Haw, Fred Lamming, John Thomas Lea, Samuel Leggate, Edward Lowe, Earnest Metcalf, Leonard Metcalf, Arthur Pickwell, Earnest Roberts, Samuel Walker, Donner White and George Wilkinson WWII Leslie Alfred Dobson and Jack Robinson There is a circular walk (2 miles) starting from Wrangle Parish Hall which allows walkers to stop by the war memorial and church so you can visit the war graves. It follows pavements, roads and public footpaths. The website below contains a map and directions. https://www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/downloads/file/2448/wrangle-directions-map Clare Law

Nature’s Gift I’ve created a gentle world; There is no competition, true ‘Pollyanna’ style, no clamour to be heard, where happily I relax just flowers, trees and calmness for just a little while… and the occasional passing bird! There is no blaring music, We all need a quiet corner; or voice with discordant chime. somewhere to unwind. It is a world of peacefulness, A restful space, away from life a welcome break in time. where peace of mind we find… © Annette Borrill A tiny ‘woodland-glen’ beyond; pine needles on the ground. Violets, scattered everywhere, in the undergrowth are found. The whisper of the willow wands, the rustle of the rest; treasured tranquil time where nature knows what’s best. © Annette Borrill

Cllr George Danby, Chairman of the Parish Council, gave the following report at the Annual Parish Meeting, held remotely on 06 April 2021: It seems so soon, but another year has passed, and it has been a year when I have several firsts to report. We held a successful First Aid course, in the Parish Hall, for members and interested parishoners. The Parish Council helped the formation of the Wrangle Local History Group with a donation towards set-up costs. We obtained a £5000 grant which has enabled us to refurbish the toilet block at the Recreation Field. All members were issued with a new, dedicated email address for Council correspondence. A dementia talk was arranged and proved very informative. A personnel committee was elected, consisting of chairman, vice chairman and Cllr Seymour. Sadly, the lead thieves finally attacked our lovely church, on two occasions, creating a lot of work and expense. Thankfully, the culprits have now time to consider their actions at Her Majesty’s pleasure. We have provided new goals for the Recreation Field. At our September meeting we welcomed a new member, Cllr Wrisdale, following a shortfall at the May election. As usual, we laid a wreath at the war memorial on Remembrance Sunday. Fly tipping and littering still seem to be a problem. It’s such a shame that a minority feel it is alright to blight the countryside for everyone. S137 donations were given out as usual. Recipients were the Church, Chapel, Youth Club and Bowls Club. The Community Orchard produced some good fruit, though still not up to expectation. My thanks to Teddy, our clerk, for all her hard work and diligence, and to Bryan my Vice Chairman and all members for your support and work over the year. I wish you all good health, and good luck for the year ahead.

The Borough Councillor had nothing to report The County Councillor reported: A collapsed drain on the A52 has stopped the vibration to the properties in that area, for some reason. Pot holes will be filled prior to the scheduled surface dressing taking place. LCC have provided the drainage board with the finances to do the work required at The Gride. Lincolnshire has five and a half thousand miles of road to keep in order, but received the lowest amount of funding for highways from the Government. Recreation Field The Football Club are applying for a grant and want to use the money to improve facilities in the pavilion, showers, kitchen etc. There were no problems with this, should the grant be approved. The toilet block has been refurbished and should be used by the football team, there are no drains at the pavilion to allow for a toilet there. A resident has some concerns about some trees at the recreation field. It was resolved to have a look at the trees to see if any action should be taken since the work previously recommended has been carried out. Glass can be mixed in the glass banks when the required one is full. Fly-tipping should be reported to the Borough Council on 01205 314200 Dog fouling is becoming an issue again including on the football pitch The recreation field is for the use of everyone DOG FOULING IS NOT ACCEPTABLE Cont…..
