Three PNC Plaza Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Client Space Pittsburgh’s first high-rise in 20 years, and one of the largest environmentally friendly mixed use buildings in the nation, Three PNC Plaza is the culmination of sustainability and workplace best practices. Inside, the new corporate offices support a variety of team and individual workstyles, while reflecting a consistent aesthetic that aligns the PNC brand throughout the United States.
“Communities benefit when corporate leaders commit to economic, social and environmental responsibility. Three PNC Plaza has the potential to be a high performance green building that is not only environmentally responsible but one where employees can thrive and productivity can soar.” —Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO and Founding Chairman, U.S. Green Building Council The new PNC workplace, designed to extend the company’s existing Pittsburgh campus and expand on its award-winning com-mitment to sustainability, is a beautifully innovative, collaborative, and environmentally responsible structure. The financial service powerhouse’s commitment to sustainability, employees, shareholders, and stakeholders is evident. Based on thoughtful, research-based design, the space maximizes daylight, supports a variety of workstyles, and encourages team interaction. In addition it incorporates environmentally conscious and recycled materials, minimizes energy consumption, and reduces the company’s carbon footprint. Even interiors products were selected for sustainable manufacturing practices and recycled materials. For example, the Zody® chairs not only offer exceptional functionality and ergonomics, but are made with 51 percent recycled content, and are 98 percent recyclable. As a result of all these conscious decisions, the building has been certified at the LEED® Gold level. These individual open work spaces are available for short-term use and are equipped with network and power connections. The spaces can be used by internal PNC visitors, interns or staff that work away from the office and only needs drop-in space while in the office.
PNC Plaza / 12.10 For lunches, impromptu meetings or workers looking to get away from their own workstations for awhile this space has the views and flexibility to accommodate multiple uses. The four floors devoted to PNC employees feature private offices, individual workstations, training rooms, meeting rooms, and more. In addition, technology- ready touchdown stations are available for visitors and PNC’s increasingly mobile workforce. And a break area provides an informal setting for individual or collaborative work. What’s more, the development of this space will guide the look of future PNC branches and offices, so the company can put forth a consistent face to employees, customers, and the public. To ensure brand and aesthetic alignment, PNC has adopted the intuitive Mosaic™ facilities management tool , which ensures that a consistent brand can be easily adapted to any work site or style. Meeting tables and standing height files are located in “neighborhoods” for impromptu, informal meetings among teams. Confidential conversations are best held in the private office or conference room area. Plenty of storage is available for all workers.

Top: For personal banking between a PNC rep and a client, private offices in each retail branch are used on a daily basis to discuss confidential information (such as long-term savings or investment strategies). Paper storage is limited as most client information is stored virtually. Bottom Left: Stations are available for personal electronic banking and guest lounges are used while waiting for meetings with PNC representatives. Bottom Right: The 2380 square foot wall is outfitted with hardy evergreens and perennials held within 602 soil-filled panels. Not only does the wall add aesthetically to the façade of One PNC Plaza, but it also provides shading and insulation, which lowers the building’s cooling needs.
PNC employees, at various branch locations, spend their entire day at their workstation in order to be readily available for walk-in customers. Highly ergonomic chairs are adjustable to allow workers to change from sitting to standing throughout the day.
