Help Support Our Animals A Little History Are You Aware That... • Othello had a dog pound that was closed years ago. You can see what remains by traveling west on W. Main from Broadway. • ACPR made its first presence in Othello in a trailer house, that was lost in a fire about 10 years ago • ACPR signed an agreement with Adams County for a new location, allowing for the construction of a building shell and the drilling of a well. • The shell was completed before the 2014 Adams County Fair. Paid for by private donations. • From 2015-2016 there was a volunteer effort to complete the project. • Unfortunately many deficiencies remained. • Starting in April 2017 a plan was put in place to correct the deficiencies that would be funded by private donations. Out-of-County Adoption Program ACPR receives more animals each year than can be re-homed in Adams County. Why does this happen? It’s all about location. Adams County is bordered by Grant County on the north and west, and Franklin County on the south. However, the major population of people and animals live within 15 miles of Othello. The circle defines the economic support area of Othello and Adams County Panhandle Here’s The Problem When an animal is brought in from another county, ACPR is “considered” to have the obligation to care for, and re-home the animal. However, there are fewer animals re-homed in Adams County each year than are received each year. Here’s The Solution Teach all animals how to read roadsigns, or continue to expand ACPR’s aggressive Out-of-County Adoption Program. Page 12 June 4, 2019
Out-of-County Adoption Program Locations We transport cats and dogs to adoption events in Tri-Cities, Moses Lake, and three sites in Western Washington. The events are held in Pet Stores in these cities. Logistics With 63 adoption events a year, we may send vehicles to more than one adoption site on a Saturday. For example one vehicle may go to Western Washington while another would go to Tri-Cities. Staffing Staffing of event sites require an average of two employees. With driving to and from each site and working the adoptions, each event runs from 8.5 to 13.5 hours requiring overtime. Costs These costs include staffing, transportation and overhead. Total budgeted cost for 2019 is $29,500. PetSmart Program Helps • Late 2017 we partnered with PetSmart in Puyallup and started taking cats and kittens to one store, providing a much needed adoption venue for our cats. • In early 2018, we expanded to a Seattle PetSmart store providing increased exposure for cat adoptions. • Starting in 2019, we’ve added another Petsmart store in Lynnwood for normal adoptions and placement of senior cats (special project sponsored by PetSmart with community help). • PetSmart has incentives that can be earned for different levels of adoption numbers. An example: 500 adoptions reward us $10,000. • By being a PetSmart Partner we also gain additional bonuses of donated food and supplies. • And, we re-home 500+ animals a year that otherwise would not have a home. Help Support Our Animals by Donating to Support Continuing Shelter Operations You can see large investments have been made in Fixed Assets over the last two and a half years. ACPR currently has over $1.1 million in facilities and capital im- provements, and no debt. But the job is not complete. These assets have all been funded through private donations and a one time $25,000 Waste Management settlement grant in 2015. Regular Annual Governmental support is used for continuing operations only. Are these Assets Being Used? You be the judge. Animal adoptions by year. 2015....................159 2017................... 782 2016....................515 2018................. 1093 Here’s how you can help. The only way non-profit shelters can survive is with donations, large and small, from caring supporters. The staff and management of ACPR ask you to review the cost of the activities and supplies, used seven days a week for animal care. While the donations for facilities have been extremely important, without them we would not be operating. However, with rising operational costs, we are facing a shortfall in operational income. The good news is, over the last two and half years, our unrestricted donations for operations have more than doubled. Even with this growth, there was a 2018 budget shortfall. To assure no budget shortfall for 2019, an addi- tional $100,000 will be required in community donations. Like the Phoenix it will be done. Page 14 June 4, 2019
