neighbourly.co.nz SEPTEMBER 6, 2018, BAY CHRONICLE 7 M. bovis spreads to Northland ESTHER TAUNTON A Northland dry stock farm has tested positive for Mycoplasma bovis, the first confirmed infec- tion in the region. Biosecurity New Zealand said on Thursday a property in Northland had tested positive for the cattle disease, taking the number of infected properties nationwide to 37. The infected property was a dry stock beef farm. It was ident- ified through the tracing of animals movements from other infected farms and was now under a ‘‘restricted place’’ notice. Restricted place notices mean a property is effectively in quar- antine lockdown, with no movement of animals or other risk goods on and off the farm. Biosecurity NZ would not name the farm but neighbours who shared a boundary with the infected property had been noti- fied. However, the risk to neigh- bouring farms was ‘‘very low’’. Infected cattle on the property would be culled as part of the Government’s $886 million attempt to eradicate the disease. Biosecurity NZ was planning a public meeting for next week in Northland and further details would be announced in the next few days. 14 BAY CHRONICLE, SEPTEMBER 6, 2018 neighbourly.co.nz Mongoose hunt for Pipi the pooch BAYLEY MOOR Pipi the German Shorthaired Pointer from Pakaraka is destined for a career in Japan hunting mongoose. Mongoose are weasel-like creatures, famed for their ability to kill venomous snakes, includ- ing cobras. They’re a pest on the Japanese island of Amami Oshima, eating endemic rabbits, rats, birds, insects and lizards. Dogs from New Zealand are providing valuable assistance to the Japanese conservation group called Amami Mongoose Busters. Mongoose detection dog hand- ler Ryo Yamashita said mongoose were introduced to the islands of southern Japan to curb the poisonous Habu snake population. However because the snakes are nocturnal and the mongoose are active during the day, the idea was not successful. Pipi will team up with Yamashita to detect and ‘‘point’’ to mongoose burrows which will then be flushed with smoke to kill the animals. Yamashita has been trapping the animals since 2001, forming the Amami Mongoose Busters in 2005, with dogs introduced to the eradication programme in 2008. 16 BAY CHRONICLE, SEPTEMBER 6, 2018 neighbourly.co.nz Far North’s ‘medieval’ coverage BAYLEY MOOR Frustrated residents have labelled the lack of cellphone coverage in parts of the Far North as ‘‘medieval’’. Anne Miller lives in Takahue, near Kaitaia, and said cellphone coverage is non existent. The settlement has been identified under the Government’s Mobile Black Spot Fund. ‘‘It really is medieval, for this day and age it’s shocking,’’ Mil- ler said. Miller moved from the Coro- mandel to Cable Bay on the east coast of the Far North, which had VDSL broadband and cellphone coverage. Now cell phones sit ‘‘dead as’’ in the drawer in Takahue and they’ve only recently found an internet provider in Uber Broadband. Just 12km out of Kerikeri, Claire Pitfield frequently misses cell phone calls due to patchy coverage. Pitfield runs a taxi business and drives a truck and said mobile coverage is essential. Calls to her cellphone usually went straight to voicemail. ‘‘It’s costing me because I have to call people back,’’ Pitfield said. ‘‘It’s frustrating we don’t have good reception since we are only Claire Pitfield said coverage can be hard to find at her place near Kerikeri.
