I'm sure that Martin Davies again next year. will make a superb Seniors Captain and that you will continue your excellent We have now finished the inter club matches support. JUNIOR CAPTAINS -CIARA EGAN AND JACOB FAWCETT We have had a great summer of Junior Golf, with many different types of events and successes, both at the club and away at County and National events. Our Captains’ Day was held on the 14th of August and it was a great day. Everyone really enjoyed the day and it was great to see so many young juniors starting to take part. Together we raised just under £1700 for our chosen charities which we thought was excellent. We have also enjoyed many different types of other events. We had a pilot for a new 3 hour weekly coaching, which was very well received, and a Summer Series Stableford which was well attended, and counted towards the overall Order of Merit. Along with friendly matches against other clubs, our annual match against the Ladies and Seniors, and the new Junior Ryder Cup event over 2 days, where the Juniors (Europe) beat the adults (USA) 8 ½ to 3 ½ , there has been something for everyone. The successes of our juniors away from home is a long list. The stand outs would be that both Ben Loveard and Rosin Scanlon represented England, Roisin playing against Wales, and Ben playing in the Home Internationals, Chanel Fontaine-Geary winning the Faldo Series Under 18’s in Wales, and Tom O’Kane winning the St Andrews Boys Under 18 Open. We now concentrate on the Vale League for our scratch team, and may more events over the October half term before the season ends, and we both hope everyone has a great end to the year with some good golf. UPDATE ON THE COURSES As I write this column, we have enjoyed the best week of Summer so far with desired recovery period. The team have been undertaking additional works 3 days in September above 25°C. around members events in order to gain full recovery. Although the average temperature has crept up slightly this season we have We have recently undertaken drainage installations on the 16th Marquess experienced less hot days and rainfall has never been too far away. As Autumn approaches the greenstaff will begin aeration This August we undertook a process called Dryject for our annual works across all playing surfaces, in the form of solid tine renovation work on the Duchess greens. This process involves injecting water spiking. The last two Autumns have rapidly become very at high pressure into the greens, which in turn draws dry sand into the profile wet at the start of October and our schedule of fairway under vacuum. The goal of this being to increase the percolation rate and aeration is designed to ensure we can undertake works firm the playing surfaces through winter. We would have expected a slightly on the perennially wet areas ahead of this change in longer recovery period for this practice versus our usual renovations, but weather. unfortunately the works were preceded by heavy rain which was followed by As ever, please do not hesitate to contact me on site if John Clarke the dullest August we have seen in many years resulting in a longer than you have any questions. Courses Manager WOBURN GOLF CLUB AND THE ENVIRONMENT Battery powered mowers With 135 hectares of woodland at the golf club, our green keeping team is responsible for the management and preservation of a diverse range of trees and shrubs which create the character and uniqueness of our three courses. Our goal is to balance a continuous cover throughout the woodlands, encourage a healthy habitat for wildlife whilst maintaining playability and conditions conducive to turfgrass growth. Each course has a member of the green keeping team who is responsible for our woodland management plan. They work alongside Courses Manager, John Clarke, our Estate woods team and our external consultant Andrew Bowmanshaw to ensure consistent progress is made. Projects cover tasks such as the clearing areas of Bracken or Gorse to allow the regeneration of Scots Pine, removal of dead / dying or dangerous trees that are competing with healthy trees and replanting trees, gorse, and rhododendron to achieve continuous cover. During the winter months as grass growth slows, Woodland works become a large part of the green keeper’s duties across all three golf courses. Plants spaced out ready for planting The planting plan 12
CLUBHOUSE It has been great to see so many members once again enjoying the clubhouse to its full extent attending events such as Lady Captains Day, The Kevin Byram Swindle Day and Captains Day, to mention but a few. The festive period will soon be upon us and you can now view menus for the Christmas Carol Dinner and Christmas Lunches on the member’s area of the website. Bookings for these events and the Children's Christmas Party have now opened. After significant investment in terms of both time and money, we are delighted to announce that we have a ‘free to download’ members APP that runs in conjunction with our club management software - Elite ESP. The App will have great deal of functionality and will allow you to: • book and manage your tee times and activities at the club, • update you on your levy spend and when you may need to top up, • alert you to important club news like course closures or changes to buggy usage. A visual showing the planned improvements for the main terrace Towards the end of the year, it is our intention to make significant improvements to the main terrace. The installation will provide an area with a retractable roof to include built in heaters, which will increase the flexibility of use. We recommend you take the time to download this app and get familiar with the functionality, as we will be using it for more and more member communications in the future. Whilst recruitment within hospitality continues to be a significant challenge and a constant focus, I am pleased with how effective the team have been bringing in In closing, please be aware that we have reinstated the laundered white new members of staff to our team. hand towels within all the washroom areas. Firstly, preheat your oven to 180 ‘C and line a square tin with parchment paper. In a large bowl mix the butter and sugars until smooth, add the eggs and vanilla and mix well, stir in the flour and custard powder until smooth then finally add the chopped custard creams and chocolate chips. Pour the mixture into the baking tray and cook for 25-30 minutes, the blondie should have a slight wobble in the middle, this will make it gooey and soft. Once cooked leave to cool before portioning with a knife. They can be decorated with a drizzle of melted chocolate or sprinkles. And the best bit - enjoy! Makes 16 pieces 13
BE A VERSATILE BUNKER PLAYER! By Head Professional and Fellow of the PGA, Daniel Grieve The greatest skill in being a good bunker player begins before you even set-up to the ball! The ability to assess the lie and make the relevant adjustments is vital to achieving a good contact and therefore distance control over your greenside bunker shots. Many of you will have specialist Sand Wedges which have been designed with expertise to allow the sole to slide through the sand and splash the ball out softly. However, as we head into the Autumn the sand will inevitably become more compact after rainfall and the ability to adapt your Set-Up and Swing means you can still achieve a solid strike and reduce the risk of a thinned strike. There are a few simple Set-Up adjustments to be made which will promote more of the front section of the bounce entering the sand rather than the back section from the soft sand. You can see I have moved the ball further back this has added in a greater forward shaft lean which reduces the bounce angle of the Sand Wedge. I strike down behind the ball with a little more 'thump' with a curtailed finish. This is in contrast to where I would finish for a softer sand lie where I have a full, released finish which encourages the bounce to slide through the sand and under the ball. Switch on your senses when you walk into a bunker, does it look more compact, does it feel firmer underfoot, if so, you now know how to play the shot and make sure you are putting for your next shot! I hope you have all enjoyed your golfing season and now is the time to start working hard on your games, if you need any help preparing for next season, myself and our team of coaches will be delighted to help you. Ball markings - line or no line? AimPoint golf discusses by Jamie Donaldson Players often ask me should they use a line on their ball to help aim their putter face. CUSTOM FITTING New Irons from Ping, Taylormade and Titleist all new to the Woburn Performance Centre New - Ping i59 Irons The New Ping i59 iron has a crisp, consistent impact, solid feel and a flighted trajectory with added forgiveness. These are the result of an aerospace grade aluminum insert (AlumiCore™) joined to a forged 1025 carbon steel body and 17-4 stainless steel laser-cut face. To deliver precise, reliable distance and performance across every club, the face is engineered with MicroMax™ grooves. • AlumiCore™ Technology - an aerospace grade aluminum insert allows approximately 30 grams of material from the center of the club to be redistributed to the perimeter in the form of toe and shaft tip weights, elevating the MOI to match that of the larger PING i210 iron. • MicroMax™ Milled Grooves - the precision machined face has new MicroMax™ grooves for tighter spacing and a geometry that results in an average of four extra grooves to reduce fliers in the short irons and preserve spin in the long irons. • Higher MOI - toe and tip weighting elevate MOI to reduce the stat area and achieve a level of forgiveness unprecedented in a forged design. New - Taylormade P790 Irons The New P790 irons from Taylormade are packed with technology to suit the Mid to Low handicapper, they include: • SpeedFoam™ Air - newly engineered SpeedFoam™ Air is 69% lighter than its predecessor. It provides an average of 3.5g of weight savings that has been redistributed to further optimize mass properties for better launch conditions. The new formulation gives you exquisite sound and feel while producing a fast, flexible face. • Thin-Wall Construction and Forged L-Face - a new 8620 carbon steel construction makes the head thinner by up to 37.5% in strategic locations, allowing for a significantly lower CG placement. This new thin-walled design pairs with a responsive 1.5mm forged 4140 steel L-Face to promote supreme flexibility, fast ball speeds and distance while upholding a premium forged feel. • Thru-Slot Speed Pocket™ - the Thru-Slot Speed Pocket™ provides increased face flexibility while preserving ball speed and distance on low face strikes. • Intelligent Sweet Spot - using data analytics, we have repositioned the sweet spot lower on the face to naturally capture more shots and provide performance where golfers need it most. • Tungsten Mass for Low CG - engineers developed new construction methods to thin out the body, allowing for up to 31g of tungsten to be placed in the toe. It creates a massive amount of stability and forgiveness wrapped in a player’s package. New - Titleist T-Series Irons New Titleist T100, T100•S, T200, and U•505 irons are now being validated by the world's best players. Validating product performance across the worldwide professional tours is a critical step in the development of all high-performance Titleist golf equipment. Based on initial testing and feedback, the new line-up is poised to continue Titleist's long run as the most played irons on the PGA TOUR.
