WELCOME TO THE WARKWORTH SHOW SECOND VIRTUAL EXHIBITION 2021 Last November at the Warkworth Show AGM (when I was appointed Chair of the Show), who could have envisaged that we would be planning a second Virtual Show for 2021? At that time, my thoughts were with a beautiful sunny day in the traditional marquees in the castle grounds with the pandemic behind us – a day when the community could come together safely again, when people could gather with old friends and new, and when people could meet face-to-face with those only previously seen on Zoom! However, the Executive Committee agreed that the first and foremost priority is the safety of the community and that a second Virtual Show is the best course of action for this year too. Lessons were learnt from last year’s Virtual Show, and as such, some classes have been adapted and changed. In addition, the restriction on entries being only to residents of Warkworth Parish has been lifted, and now anyone living within a five mile radius of Warkworth Castle is encouraged to enter. Ahead of the Virtual Exhibition, we are running exciting weekly “Challenges” throughout June and I look forward to seeing examples of all the artistic and creative talent we have in the area. The Virtual Show will have the usual well supported classes, giving you and your family the opportunity to take part. Entries to the Show will be photographed, uploaded, judged and will then will go live on our website on Show Day, August 21st 2021. Please keep an eye on our website, www.warkworthshow.co.uk, and our Facebook page for the latest updates and information about the second Virtual Exhibition. If you do not have access to the internet and would like more information please ring Catherine Dowlen, the Show Secretary, on 01665 713709 or me on 07773024528. Ann Burke– Show Chair Date for the diary: Our 150th Show will be held on Saturday 20th of August 2022 when we look forward to returning to Warkworth Castle. 4
COVID’S CREATIVE CHALLENGE As in 2020, a second Warkworth Show Virtual Exhibition is being organised and to help its success – and relieve some of the boredom of Covid restrictions – you are invited to demonstrate your creativity and commitment to the Show by taking part in this year’s Challenges. One challenge is set for each week in June. When you have completed the challenge, send a photo of your entry to marketing@warkworthshow.co.uk. It is open to all ages and you can enter either as an individual or as a group. There are no prizes but all entries will be uploaded to the Warkworth Show Facebook page where visitors to the page can “like” the entries and the entry with the most “likes” will be highlighted. Now, isn’t that better than a cash prize? You don’t even need to have a camera. If you are not able to photograph or upload your entries, then please phone Catherine Dowlen (the Show Secretary) on 01665 713709 and she will help you – whilst still maintaining social distancing of course. One “rule” that we didn’t have last year! Each challenge has a deadline for uploading entries. Please respect that to ensure that the Show’s able band of helpers isn’t overwhelmed by the sheer number of entries all arriving at once – or trying to work out which photo represents which challenge. So here we go! Week 1: Submission dates between 3rd and 9th June 2021 Create an image of a landscape, using natural and recycled materials Week 2: Submission dates between 10th and 16th June 2021 Create a flag for Warkworth Village, incorporating sights which you feel epitomise the Village. The flag with the most “likes” will be made into a real flag and flown at the 2022 Warkworth Show. Week 3: Submission dates between 17th and 23rd June 2021 Collect as great a variety of leaves as possible and arrange them into a gorgeous pattern (using up to 100 leaves). Week 4: Submission dates between 24th and 30th June 2021 What does the Warkworth Show mean to you? Create a word map of what you value about the Show. Have fun! 5
INFORMATION FOR ENTRANTS INTO THE 2 ND VIRTUAL SHOW As this is a Virtual Exhibition, we want to make use of email, digital photography and the internet wherever possible. However, we are aware that some may not have these facilities and we are keen that they are not disadvantaged. Entrants who do not have access to the internet should telephone the Show Secretary, Catherine Dowlen, on 01665 713709 for details of how to enter. Entry to the 2nd Virtual Exhibition is to anyone living within a five mile radius of Warkworth Castle. All exhibitors must use the entry form on our website or the one in this schedule. Entry forms are to be emailed to the Entries Secretary at entries@warkworthshow.co.uk by the 31st July. No entries will be accepted after this date. There will be no cups or trophies awarded this year, nor will there be any prize money. On the plus side, there will be no entry fees. Every exhibit will be identified by a 6 digit number. The first 3 digits should be the Class No. 101-327 and the last 3 digits should be your personal number allocated to you after your entry form has been processed. When staging your exhibit ensure the appropriate and unique 6 digit number is written just below each exhibit so that it can be included in each photograph. Use a small label if necessary. Only one entry per person per class allowed. NO multiple entries will be accepted. Where there are less than 3 entries in a class, placings will be awarded at the judges’ discretion. In every case, the decision of the judges will be final. Children’s entries All children’s entries apart from the Children’s Sunflower classes (numbers 108,118 and 128) should be photographed and then emailed to the entries email address (using the same process as detailed for the Art, Writing and Photography classes). A photographer will take the photograph as detailed under the Horticulture section below for the Children’s Sunflower classes. Horticulture Once your entry form has been processed you will receive an email (phone call for those without email) informing you of your personal exhibitor’s number, and date and time slot to stage your exhibit(s) for the photographer. Most exhibits will be photographed at your house (front door step, garage, shed etc) by a photographer at a time agreed well before Show Day. Your exhibits must be ready and placed for the photographer at the required time slot. The photographer will take up to 2 images of an exhibit. Feel free to be inventive with how you stage your exhibit, and the background you choose. The photographer will need to get close to the exhibit whilst maintaining social distancing. Once all the exhibit images have been uploaded they will be made available to the judges who will award a 1st, 2nd or 3rd for each class as appropriate. Once the judging is complete the images of all the exhibits will be displayed on the website from 10am of Show Day – Saturday the 21st August. 6
Industrial - Art, writing and photography These classes require the exhibitor to upload their own photograph of their exhibit to the Show organisers. Once your entry form has been processed, you will receive an email (phone call for those without an email address), informing you of your personal exhibitor’s number. You will also receive confirmation of when to send your images. Guidance and hints on how to take photographs of artwork is available on the Warkworth Show website. All creative writing entries and poetry entries should be emailed to the entries email address (see below) as a word document. In the photography classes, exhibitors may use post-production software. All images are to be saved as a .jpg file, with a maximum size of 2mb and sent to both of the following email addresses: entries@warkworthshow.co.uk and marketing@warkworthshow.co.uk. Please name all image files with the 6 digit number, class number and your unique exhibitor’s number which will be emailed to you once your entry form has been processed. Addendum There are no classes in Handicrafts, Honey and Preserves and Baking this year as the virtual format prevents the close examination of handicrafts, and food items should be tasted in order to fairly judge entries. Every Show Day over the years, entrants and visitors have asked the same question – namely “Why did the judges award that one the first prize?” In order to support everyone who hopes to enter into the 2022 Show, the panel of judges have agreed to answer the question by describing exactly what they look for when judging the following classes: Handicrafts - quilting, embroidery, cross stitch, knitting, crochet, soft toys and machine made articles; Honey (clear and set), chutney, jam, lemon curd, jelly and fruit spirit; Baking – pastry, cheese scones, dropped scones, bread, swiss roll, Victoria sandwich, decorated cakes, gingerbread loaf and shortbread. The judges comments and advice will be available on the Show website (www.warkworthshow.co.uk ) from July 2021, giving people plenty of time to practice for next year’s Show. 15
