Rejoice, the Lord is King (Tune: Darwall)

Rejoice, the Lord is King;
your Lord and King adore;
let all give thanks, and sing,
and triumph evermore;
       Lift up your heart, lift up your voice.
       Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!

Jesus the Saviour reigns,
the God of truth and love;
when he had purged our stains,
he took his seat above:
     Lift up your heart…

His kingdom cannot fail,
he rules o’er earth and heaven;
the keys of death and hell
are to our Jesus given:
      Lift up your heart…

He sits at God’s right hand,
till all his foes submit,
and bow to his command,
and fall beneath his feet:
        Lift up your heart...

Rejoice in glorious hope;
Jesus the judge shall come,
and take his servants up
to their eternal home:
      We soon shall hear the archangel’s voice;
      the trump of God shall sound, Rejoice!

Greeting
Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Blessed be God’s kingdom, now and forever.

Invitation to Confession and Absolution
“Hear, O Israel, the Lord is one: you shall love the Lord your God with all
your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your
strength.” Jesus said: “This is the great and first commandment. And a
second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.”

Silence may be kept

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God’s
forgiveness.

Merciful God,
our maker and our judge,
we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
and in what we have failed to do:
we have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;
we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.
Father, forgive us.
Strengthen us to love and obey you
in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness
to all who turn to him in faith:
pardon you and set you free from all your sins,
strengthen you in all goodness
and keep you in eternal life,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The First Reading                                                Don Menzies
A reading from the Book of Exodus
Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he came down from the mountain
with the two tablets of the covenant in his hand, Moses did not know that the
skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. When Aaron
and all the Israelites saw Moses, the skin of his face was shining, and they
were afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them; and Aaron and all
the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke with them.
Afterward all the Israelites came near, and he gave them in commandment
all that the Lord had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. When Moses had
finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face; but whenever Moses
went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would take the veil off, until he
came out; and when he came out, and told the Israelites what he had been

                                      7
commanded, the Israelites would see the face of Moses, that the skin of his
face was shining; and Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he
went in to speak with him.
                                                         [Exodus 34.29-35]

Psalm 99.1-7, 9
Response: Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!
                  Let your glory over all the earth be found.
The Lord reigns; let the peoples tremble!
The Lord sits enthroned upon the cherubim;
let the earth quake!
The Lord is great in Zion,
and is exalted over all the peoples. Response
Let them praise your great and wondrous name!
Holy is the Lord!
Mighty Ruler; lover of justice,
you have established equity;
you have executed justice
and righteousness in Jacob.                 Response

Extol the Lord our God.
Worship at the Lord’s footstool!
Holy is the Lord!
Moses and Aaron were among God’s priests,
Samuel also was among those who called on God’s name.
They cried to the Lord, who answered them,
who spoke to them in the pillar of cloud.
They kept God’s testimonies,
and the statutes God gave them.
Extol the Lord our God,
and worship at his holy mountain;
Surely the Lord our God is holy! Response

The Second Reading
A Reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians
Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness, not like
Moses, who put a veil over his face to keep the people of Israel from
gazing at the end of the glory that was being set aside. But their minds
were hardened. Indeed, to this very day, when they hear the reading of the
old covenant, that same veil is still there, since only in Christ is it set aside.
Indeed, to this very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their
minds; but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord
is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And all of
us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in
a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of
glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit.
Therefore, since it is by God’s mercy that we are engaged in this ministry,
we do not lose heart. We have renounced the shameful things that one
hides; we refuse to practice cunning or to falsify God’s word; but by the
open statement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of
everyone in the sight of God.
                                                     [2 Corinthians 3.12-4.2]

‘Take up your cross,’ the Saviour said
                              (Tune: O Jesu Christ, Meins Lebens Licht)
‘Take up your cross,’ the Saviour said,
‘if you would my disciple be;
take up your cross with willing heart
and humbly follow after me.’
Take up your cross; let not its weight
fill your weak spirit with alarm;
his strength shall bear your spirit up
and brace your heart and nerve your arm.
Take up your cross, nor heed the shame,
and let your foolish pride be still:
your Lord refused not even to die
upon a cross, on Calvary’s hill.

                                      9
Take up your cross, then, in his strength
and calmly every danger brave;
it guides you to a better home
and leads to victory o’er the grave.
Take up your cross and follow Christ,
nor think till death to lay it down;
for only those who bear the cross
may hope to wear the glorious crown.

The Gospel Reading
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
From the shining cloud the Father’s voice is heard:
“This is my beloved Son, listen to him.” Alleluia!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Luke, Chapter 9,
beginning at the 28th verse.
Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and
John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. And while he was
praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became
dazzling white. Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to
him. They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he
was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions were
weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his
glory and the two men who stood with him. Just as they were leaving him,
Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three
dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah” — not knowing
what he said. While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed
them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud
came a voice that said, “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!” When
the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in
those days told no one any of the things they had seen.
                                                           [Luke 9.28-36]
This is the Gospel of the Lord
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Sermon - The Rector

                                     10
The Creed
Let us stand and join together in the words of the Nicene Creed.
We believe in one God,
the Father, the almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge
the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

                                  11

Offertory Hymn
How good, Lord, to be here (Tune: Carlisle)
How good, Lord, to be here!
Your glory fills the night;
your face and garments, like the sun,
shine with unborrowed light.
How good, Lord, to be here,
your beauty to behold,
where Moses and Elijah stand,
your messengers of old.
Fulfiller of the past,
promise of things to be:
we hail your body glorified,
and our redemption see.
Before we taste of death,
we see your Kingdom come;
we still would hold the vision bright,
and make this hill our home.
                                   12
How good, Lord, to be here!
Yet we may not remain;
but since you bid us leave the mount
come with us to the plain.

The Presider says
Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation.
Through your goodness we have these gifts to share.
Accept and use our offerings for your glory
and for the service of your kingdom.
Blessed be God for ever.

                         The Great Thanksgiving
Please remain standing
The Sursum Corda
We sing together
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

The Presider continues
All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere,
mighty Creator, everliving God.
We give you thanks and praise for your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ,
who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary
and lived as one of us.
By his death on the cross
and rising to new life,
he offered the one true sacrifice for sin
and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people.
Therefore with angels and archangels,
and with all the company of heaven,
we proclaim your great and glorious name,
for ever praising you and singing:

                                    13
Merciful God, we thank you
for these gifts of your creation,
this bread and wine,
and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit,
we who eat and drink them
may be partakers of Christ’s body and blood.
On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread;
and when he had given you thanks
he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,
‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you.
Do this in remembrance of me.’

After supper he took the cup,
and again giving you thanks
he gave it to his disciples, saying,
‘Drink from this, all of you.
This is my blood of the new covenant
shed for you and for many
for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’

                                     14
Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:

Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded:
proclaiming his offering of himself
made once for all upon the cross,
his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension,
and looking for his coming again,
we celebrate, with this bread and this cup,
his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice
for the sins of the whole world.

Renew us by your Holy Spirit,
unite us in the body of your Son,
and bring us with all your people
into the joy of your eternal kingdom;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
with whom, and in whom,
in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,
we worship you, Father,
in songs of never-ending praise:

                                        15
As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come,
   your will be done on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
   and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

           The Breaking of the Bread and the Communion

The Presider breaks the bread and says:
We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
We who are many are one body
For we all share in the one bread.

Please sit to sing the Agnus Dei:

The Presider says
The Gifts of God for the people of God. Come, let us take this
holy sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ,
in remembrance that he died for us,
and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. Amen.

         Communion will be administered at the Chancel Steps.
        Please come forward and remember to socially distance.
                                    16
Communion Anthem
Please be seated while the choir sings
See us, Lord, about your altar (Tune: Drake’s Broughton)
See us, Lord, about your altar;
though so many, we are one:
many souls by love united
in the heart of Christ your Son.
Hear our prayers, O loving Father,
hear in them your Son, our Lord;
hear him speak our love and worship
as we sing with one accord.
Wheat and grape are rich with meaning:
food and drink he is to all;
one in him, we kneel adoring,
gathered by his loving call.
Hear us yet: so much is needful
in our frail, disordered life;
stay with us and tend our weakness
till that day of no more strife.
Members of his mystic body,
now we know our prayer is heard,
heard by you, because your children
have received the eternal word.

                     The Sending Out of God’s People
Gracious God,
we thank you that in this Sacrament
you assure us of your goodness and love.
Accept our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving
and help us to grow in love and obedience
that we may serve you in the world
and finally be brought to that table
where all your saints feast with you for ever.

Father,
we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Send us out in the power of your Spirit
to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.

                                      17

Final Hymn
O Master, let me walk with thee (Tune: Maryton)
O Master, let me walk with thee
in lowly paths of service free;
thy secret tell: help me to bear
the strain of toil, the fret of care.

Help me the slow of heart to move
by some clear winning word of love;
teach me the wayward feet to stay
and guide them in the homeward way.

Teach me thy patience; still with thee
in closer, dearer company,
in work that keeps faith sweet and strong,
in trust that triumphs over wrong,

in hope that sends a shining ray
far down the future’s broadening way,
in peace that only thou canst give,
with thee, O Master, let me live.

The Blessing and Dismissal
The peace of God which passes all understanding keep your hearts and
minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son, Jesus Christ
our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and
the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
In the name of Christ. Amen.
