LIFE IN MANHATTAN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Why A Rooster? The symbol for Manhattan Presbyterian Church is a rooster grasping onto the cross. Simply put, it is picture of God’s grace to sinners. It is an image of Peter’s failure and Jesus Christ’s triumph. Peter’s denial of Christ and the rooster crowing is recorded in all four gospels (Matthew 26:30-35 & 26:69-75). This event made Peter a broken man, a man who repents and experiences grace. In the Gospel of John, Jesus is risen and shows up on the shoreline while Peter and the others are fishing. When Peter sees Jesus, he dives in to swim to Jesus excitedly. Think how much guilt Peter must have felt after the rooster crowed. We so often want to run away from God in these moments, but we see Peter do what the Gospel calls sinners to do: run to Jesus, not from Him. He follows Jesus, moment by moment dependent upon the Gospel. Peter does so by grasping onto the cross of Jesus Christ every step of the way. That’s a picture of the redeemed, the people of God, the Bride of Christ, the Church. Sinners clinging to cross of our Savior. Historically many Protestant churches in Europe placed a rooster atop their steeples to distinguish them from Catholic Churches. The rooster has been a Christian symbol since God used it to show the weakness of man with Peter and the triumph of Christ in the resurrection. There is hope in the Gospel for sinners everywhere including you. 4
GOD CALLS US Reflection “A stroke, from guilt, from wrath, broke Judas’ heart into despair; a look from love, from Christ, broke Peter’s into tears." - George Swinnock “That weather vane on the steeple was brought from Maine by my grandfather and stood above his church for many years. He gave it to my father on the day of his ordination. The people in Maine used to put those roosters on their steeples, he told me, to remind themselves of the betrayal of Peter, to help them repent. They really didn't use crosses much at all in those days.” - Gilead, by Marilynne Robinson Standing Call to Worship God invites us from 1 Timothy 1:17 to worship Him, we respond to His invitation. Pastor: Let us praise our God and King! People: To the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever! 5

PREACHING OF GOD’S WORD We preach from the Counting Crows: Luke 22:54-62 English Pastor Brian Hough Standard Version. Bibles Isaiah 40:8 are available to “The grass withers, the flower fades, use and keep on the but the word of our God will stand forever.” Welcome Table. As the Bible is the primary means by which God speaks to and edifies His people, we read and listen to the Scriptures together in worship. In ancient Israel and the early church, services of worship were organized for the public reading of Scripture - a practice vital to building up the community of faith. A sermon is not just a teaching for living; it is mainly a time when Christ encounters His people through His Word. 13

GOD COMMUNES WITH US The Lord’s Supper Communion is a sign and seal for those who believe in Jesus Christ alone for the forgiveness of sin. It's not for good people. It's for you if you believe and embrace that you are worse and more messed up than you ever dare to admit; and yet you are more loved and accepted by our Savior than you had ever dared to hope - this is because of the life, the death and the resurrection of Jesus for you. You will be invited to come forward. We serve wine, but also offer grape juice (cups on the outside ring) for those who prefer for reasons of personal conviction. We offer a gluten free bread option for communion for those whose diets necessitate it. Please let us know in advance if you need this option and we can accommodate you. Children are welcome to come with their parents. Each child should talk with the elders about his or her belief in Christ before taking the Lord's Supper. Please contact us to do that at a future date. If you are not taking the Lord's Supper with us today, we don't want this to be an awkward time. You can come forward and an elder will pray with you or you may stay seated and pray one of the prayers provided on the next page. We're glad you're here today. Words of Institution Pastor: Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: People: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Pastor: Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed for us. People: Therefore, let us keep the feast. Pastor: The gifts of God are for the people of God. Come eat and drink with thanksgiving. Prayer of Thanksgiving 15
GOD COMMUNES WITH US The prayers below are provided as guides for your silent, individual prayer during the Lord’s Supper PRAYER FOR THOSE SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH Lord Jesus, you claim to be the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open me to the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent and convincing, and that leads to the life you promise. Amen. PRAYER OF FAITH Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserved in order to offer me complete forgiveness. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Amen. PRAYER OF COMMITMENT Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen. PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESS I do not presume to come to this your table, O merciful Lord, trusting in my own goodness, but only in your righteousness credited to me. I am not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose manner is always to show mercy. Grant me, therefore, O Lord, the grace to commune now with Christ by faith, that I may evermore live in him and he in me. Amen. 16
