According to these religious texts, before time existed, only God existed, and he created the universe with his divine word. Islam: The creation story • Although some translations of the Qur’an do refer to days, most Muslims understand the original text to mean six phases, or periods of time. As a day (24 hours) is something which humans have invented. • Unlike the Bible, the Qur’an does not specify exactly what took place on which period, but it does describe at various points some of God’s creation. It is He who created night and days, the sun and the moon, each floating in its orbit.” Qur’an 21:31-33 • Once creation had taken place, the Qur’an does not mention a day of rest (unlike the Bible). • It describes how, after the six periods of creating the heavens and the earth, God then organised the whole universe to be under his watchful command, and befitting is glory. • Muslims believe that God’s work and creation never ends as it continues with every new birth and every new seed that grows. Christian views towards stewardship • Christians believe that God has given humans the privilege of living on plant Earth but with the responsibility of looking after it and preventing it from being ruined. • There is only one planet Earth and it cannot be replaced. • This special responsibly to protect and care for the earth is known as stewardship. • In Genesis 2, Adam was given the task of looking after the garden of Eden. • As stewards of the natural world, Christians believe that people have been appointed by God to respect and manage the world, working with nature to preserve what God has given.. • In return we are able to use what is provided in a sustainable way for our survival. • Many Christians believe that they will be accountable to God concerning how week they looked after the Earth. Muslim views on stewardship • The Qur’an says that God created the world and gave humans the responsibility of taking care of the planet. • In Islam this is referred to as stewardship (khalifah). • Both Sunni and Shi’a Muslims believe that people are stewards who should protect the environment. • Their duty as trustees it to look after the world for God and for future generations and to strive to maintain the harmony and balance which was created. • On the Day of Judgement, humans will be answerable to God concerning how well they have fulfilled this role. • In the Qur’an, it explains that the laws of his creations should not be altered. • The central belief in the Tawhid is at the heart of Muslim beliefs about looking after the environment. • This recognizes that God is the creator and we are responsible to him for all our actions. Task D: Explain what the quotes teach Muslims about stewardship “It is He who had made you successors on the earth.” Qur’an 6:165 “It is God that everything in the heavens and earth belongs: God is fully aware of all things.” Qur’an 4:126 Christian views on Dominion • Christians teach that humans were given the power and authority to rule over the world. • This is known as dominion. 9

(Another way of interpreting the quote) •The majority of Christians believe that humans have been entrusted to be caretakers (stewards) of God’s world. They can’t damage the world even if it benefits them. Task F: In your extended writing tasks, you need to use PEE (point, evidence, explain) to structure your work. Human beings have “You appointed Humans should treat the environment with respect a soul and human them rulers over because it does not belong to life is sacred all you had made” them – it belongs to God. “And God breathed God gives man a specific task, God made humans which is to protect the Garden of the breath of life into stewards of his the man, and he Eden and help it grow. The creation environment must be important became a living being” for God to give humans this job. No other part of creation was “Your body is a made ‘in the image’ or ‘to be like’ God “breathed” God. This means that human temple of the holy life into Adam beings are special, and more spirit” important than the other things God created. 11

In a UK-wide survey of 1,491 adults and 1,582 children between 2008 - 2011 2% of both adults and children reported that they were vegetarian. • The number of committed vegetarians has actually remained fairly stable over the last ten years. The real growth area is in meat reducers. These are people who haven't given up meat completely, but are making a conscious effort to eat less of it. The value of the vegetarian food market has grown from £333million in 1996 to £786.5million in 2011 (Mintel), showing that a lot more vegetarian food is being eaten throughout the country. • Everyday, in the UK alone, more than 2.5 million farm animals are slaughtered for meat. Task J: Mind Map Give reasons why people do not eat meat Christian views towards eating meat • Christians have the choice to be meat-eaters, vegetarians or vegans. • They should be sensitive to the beliefs of others about what they wish to eat. • Most Christians eat meat, as do around 90% of other people in the UK • Those who decide to be vegans or vegetarians usually do so because they are against killing animals, they believe that animals should not be harmed. Task K: Explain what the quotes teach Christians about eating meat “The one who eats everything [meat] must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them.” Romans 14:3 27
1.5 The use and abuse of animals Christianity P94-95 Islam: p80-81 • Understand religious beliefs about the use and abuse of animals. • Understand and explain religious attitudes towards animal experimentation and the use of animals for food “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.” Luke 12:6 Muslim views towards eating meat: • Muslims are only allowed to eat meat that has been killed according to Shar’iah law. • For food to be halal (permissible) it must have been farmed and slaughtered according to Muslim teaching. • This involves killing the animals ‘in the name of God’. • A sharp knife is used to cut the throat, windpipe and the blood vessels in the neck and the blood is drained. • This must not take place in front of other animals. • The Qur’an expressly forbids the eating of pig meat and it is also haram to eat any animal which has not been ritually slaughtered or has died in the wild. • To provide food is an example of a just cause, but hunting for entertainment and pleasure is not.. • Most Muslims are meat-eaters but some choose to be vegetarians. Task L: Explain what the quote teaches Muslims about eating meat (animals) “Whoever kills a sparrow, or anything bugger than that without a just cause, God will hold him accountable on the Day of Judgment.” Hadith GCSE 4 Marker Explain two contrasting religious views towards eating meat __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ 28
