Christianity: The creation story
Christians believe that the universe didn’t just make itself but was designed and made by God.
God created all things that exist ex nihilo “out of nothing’.
We have looked at this before, so it is a great way for recap!

Task B: Make notes on the creation story and write down what happens on the 7 days of creation

1.1 The origins of the universe
                                Christianity P86-87 Islam: 74-75
• Explore religious beliefs about the origins of the universe.
• Understand the Big Bang theory and religious responses to this.

Remember Christians and Muslims have very similar beliefs about the origins of the universe.
The sacred text in the religions state that the universe was created by God in six days (phases).
According to these religious texts, before time existed, only God existed, and he created the
                                  universe with his divine word.

Islam: The creation story
• Although some translations of the Qur’an do refer to days, most Muslims understand the
original text to mean six phases, or periods of time. As a day (24 hours) is something which
   humans have invented.
• Unlike the Bible, the Qur’an does not specify exactly what took place on which period, but it
does describe at various points some of God’s creation.

Task D: Watch the video on Muslim beliefs about the creation story and note their beliefs
                          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKYptpzmvdo

Task E: Explain what the quotes teach Muslims about creation

“Your Lord is God, who created the
heavens and earth in six Days, then
established Himself on the throne; He
makes the night cover the day in swift
pursuit; He created the sun, moon and
stars to be subservient to His command.
All creation and all command belong to
Him. Exalted be God, Lord of all the
worlds!”
                             Qur’an 7:54

                                                                                                2

1.1 The origins of the universe
                                   Christianity P86-87 Islam: 74-75
• Explore religious beliefs about the origins of the universe.
• Understand the Big Bang theory and religious responses to this.

“And We put firm mountains on the
earth, lest it should sway under
them, and set broad paths on it, so
that they might follow the right
direction, and We have made the
sky as a well-secured canopy- yet
from its wonders they turn away. It
is He who created night and days,
the sun and the moon, each floating
in its orbit.”
                     Qur’an 21:31-33

    • Once creation had taken place, the Qur’an does not mention a day of rest (unlike the Bible).
    • It describes how, after the six periods of creating the heavens and the earth, God then
organised the whole universe to be under his watchful command, and befitting is glory.
    • Muslims believe that God’s work and creation never ends as it continues with every new birth
and every new seed that grows.

Task F: Explain what the quotes teach Muslims about creation

“Vegetation come out of good land
in abundance, by the will of its
Lord.”
                        Qur’an 7:58

Task G: Note the similarities and differences between the Biblical and Quranic accounts of creation

                                         interpret the Genesis story.

The Big Bang Theory
• According to cosmologists the world, all the planets and our sun came form dense clouds of
  gas.
• These clouds collapsed and the pressure of their mass gave enough energy to turn hydrogen
  to helium.
• This is how a sun like ours is created.
• They also believe that the entire universe came from a single massive explosion, 10 to 20
  billion years ago.
• Generally it is pointed to 14.7 billion years ago, but it’s not definite.
• This explosion is called The Big Bang Theory.

Task I: Explain what the Big Bang Theory is in your own words. Use P87 (Christianity) and the internet

Task J: Using p87 (Christianity) and p75 (Islam), Explain Christian and Muslim responses to the Big bang

1.2 The Value of the world
                               Christianity P88-89 Islam: 76-77
• Understand religious beliefs about the value of the world and the duty/ responsibility human
  beings have to protect it.
Christian views towards stewardship
• Christians believe that God has given humans the privilege of living on plant Earth but with
the responsibility of looking after it and preventing it from being ruined.
• There is only one planet Earth and it cannot be replaced.
• This special responsibly to protect and care for the earth is known as stewardship.
• In Genesis 2, Adam was given the task of looking after the garden of Eden.
• As stewards of the natural world, Christians believe that people have been appointed by God
to respect and manage the world, working with nature to preserve what God has given..
• In return we are able to use what is provided in a sustainable way for our survival.
• Many Christians believe that they will be accountable to God concerning how week they looked
  after the Earth.
Muslim views on stewardship
• The Qur’an says that God created the world and gave humans the responsibility of taking
  care of the planet.
• In Islam this is referred to as stewardship (khalifah).
• Both Sunni and Shi’a Muslims believe that people are stewards who should protect the
  environment.
• Their duty as trustees it to look after the world for God and for future generations and to
strive to maintain the harmony and balance which was created.
• On the Day of Judgement, humans will be answerable to God concerning how well they have
  fulfilled this role.
• In the Qur’an, it explains that the laws of his creations should not be altered.
• The central belief in the Tawhid is at the heart of Muslim beliefs about looking after the
  environment.
• This recognizes that God is the creator and we are responsible to him for all our actions.

Task D: Explain what the quotes teach Muslims about stewardship

“It is He who had made
you successors on the
earth.”
             Qur’an 6:165

“It is God that
everything in the
heavens and earth
belongs: God is fully
aware of all things.”
             Qur’an 4:126

Christian views on Dominion
• Christians teach that humans were given the power and authority to rule over the world.
• This is known as dominion.

                                                                                                9
1.2 The Value of the world
                               Christianity P88-89 Islam: 76-77
• Understand religious beliefs about the value of the world and the duty/ responsibility human
  beings have to protect it.

Task E: Explain how the quote links to dominion and what the quote teaches Christians

“God blessed them and said to
them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in
number; fill the earth and subdue
it. Rule over the fish in the sea and
the birds in the sky and over every
living creature that moves on the
ground.”
                           Genesis 1:8

•A small amount of Christians have interpreted ‘subduing the world’ as meaning that people can do
what they like with it and everything in it because they are in charge. (Another way of
interpreting the quote)
•The majority of Christians believe that humans have been entrusted to be caretakers
(stewards) of God’s world. They can’t damage the world even if it benefits them.

Task F: In your extended writing tasks, you need to use PEE (point, evidence, explain) to
                                      structure your work.
On the next page, you have 8 points, 8 pieces of evidence, and 8 explanations. You have two
tasks:
1) Decide whether or not these views are of STEWARDSHIP or DOMINION. Shade
stewardship views in GREEN, and dominion views in RED.
2) Match up each point with the evidence and explanation (one has been done for you as an
example).

GRADE 7+ (Looking for Level 4,10-12/12) Rank each argument, from most to least convincing.
Do you agree more with the stewardship view, or the dominion view? This links to your analysis-
Why is the point/ PEE chain a good argument or a weak one? Explain

                                                                                                10

The environment “Not one sparrow of nature and the environment
and animals belong is forgotten by then they are more important
to God God” than either of them – they

Human beings are a “I make rivers Even though God is all-powerful

the environment Lord” humans more important.

                                                                  God planned the environment

Did you know?
• 27,000 trees are cut down each day so we can have Toilet Paper.
• Aluminium can be recycled continuously, as in forever. Recycling 1 aluminium can save enough
energy to run our TVs for at least 3 hours. 80 trillion aluminium cans are used by humans
    every year.
• When you throw plastic bags and other plastic materials in the ocean, it kills as many as 1
million sea creatures annually. Plastic take 450 years just to begin decomposing. It takes
another 50 to 80 years to be completely decomposed. This also means that every single
piece of plastic even made has not even started to decompose. Plastic take 450 years just to

• A glass bottle made in our time will take more than 4,000 years to decompose if it is not
    recycled.
• Only 1% of our planet’s water supply can be used. 97% is ocean water and 2% is frozen solid
    in the Arctic, for now.
• Our planet gains inhabitants numbering to 77 million people a year.
• An estimated 50,000 species inhabiting our tropical forests become extinct annually. That’s
an average of 137 species a day.
• Rainforests are cut down at a rate of 100 acres per minute.
• Landfills are composed of 35% packaging materials.

Pollution puts the health of humans, animals and plants at risk.
However, despite laws to limit pollutant and attempts to clean up the environment, pollution
continues to be a problem as technology advances and the world’s population grows. There are
                                    many forms of pollution including:
Air pollution, land pollution and water pollution

Christian views on pollution
• Christians believe the world is on loan to humans, who have been given the responsibility by
     God to look after it.
• The parable of the talents warns that when God returns, he will judge how responsible
     people have been.
• Polluting the planet is not good stewardship, as God’s creation is being abused.
• Pollution also harms people, so it not ‘loving one’s neighbour’ or helping future generations.
• Christians, out of respect for God’s creation, believe they must help protect the natural
world from being harmed by pollution.

Task B: Explain what the quotes teach Christians about pollution

“The earth is the LORD’S,
and everything in it.”

• Muslims believe that the environment should be nurtured, valued and restored to what God
  intended it to be.
• Irresponsible behavior that leads to pollution is seen as unacceptable.
• In cases where the consequences are fatal, particularly to human life, pollution is haram
  (forbidden) in Islam.

Christians and animals
• Christians believe that animals were created by God for humans to use and care for.
• Many believe God values animals but animals but that humans are more important because they
were created in the image of God, and have souls.
• The story of Noah shows this.
• God commanded Noah to take animals into the ark so they would be safe.
• Animals are used by humans as pets, for transport and work, for food , sport experiments and
  entertainment.

Task C: Explain what the quotes teach Christians about how to treat animals

“Take with you seven of every kind
of animal, a male and its mate, and
one pair of every kind of unclean
animal, a male and its mate, and also
seven pairs of every kind of bird,
male and female, to keep their
various kinds alive throughout the
earth.”
                          Genesis 7:2-3

Everything that lives and moves
about will be food for you.’
                            Genesis 9:3
                                                                                             23

• Understand religious beliefs about the use and abuse of animals.
• Understand and explain religious attitudes towards animal experimentation and the use of
  animals for food

“Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading
out the grain”
                         Deuteronomy 35:4

“The righteous care for the needs for
their animals.”
                          Proverbs 12:10

Muslim views on the value of animals:
• Muslims believe that God made all living creature and they all worship him in their own way.
• Each animal is valuable to God, has right and should be treated with kindness and compassion.
• There are over two hundred verses in the Qur’an which mention animals and sex chapters
  (surahs) and names after animals.
• Islam teaches that animals have been made for the benefits of humans but they are not to be
  abused.
• Animals must not be beaten unnecessarily nor used to fight each other for human
  entertainment.
• Animal cruelty is to be avoided and is haram (forbidden)
• Battery farming or keeping animals in cages, goes against the principles of justice and
  compassion in Islam.
• Many people do not support zoos because they object to animals being kept in cages, although
some would accept zoos and safari parks which are helping with conservation projects and
breeding programmes to preserve species from becoming extinct.
• Muhammad is a role model for how he treated animals.
• There exists a story of how he cut off part of his cloak rather than disturb a sleeping cat.
• On another occasion it is said that Muhammad told a man to return a bird's egg when he saw
the distress of the mother bird.

Task D: Explain what the quotes teach Muslims about the way they should treat animals

“The seven heavens and the
earth, and everyone in them,
glorify Him. There is not a
single thing that does not
celebrate His praise.”
                       Qur’an 17:44

with their wings are
communities like yourselves.”
                        Qur’an 6:38
                                                                                             24

reach any destination you wish on
them: they carry you, as ships
carry you [on the sea].”
                        Qur’an 40:79-80

• Understand religious beliefs about the use and abuse of animals.
• Understand and explain religious attitudes towards animal experimentation and the use of
  animals for food
Facts about using animals for food:
• 90% of people in the UK eat meat
• It is a good source of protein, vitamins, minerals especially vitamin B12 which is only found
in food from animals eg meat and milk
• A vegetarian does not eat any meat, poultry, game, fish, shellfish or crustacea, or the by-
    products of slaughter.
• Department of Health and Food Standards Agency (FSA) – National Diet and Nutrition
    Survey. In a UK-wide survey of 1,491 adults and 1,582 children between 2008 - 2011 2% of
both adults and children reported that they were vegetarian.
• The number of committed vegetarians has actually remained fairly stable over the last ten
years. The real growth area is in meat reducers. These are people who haven't given up meat
completely, but are making a conscious effort to eat less of it. The value of the vegetarian
food market has grown from £333million in 1996 to £786.5million in 2011 (Mintel), showing
that a lot more vegetarian food is being eaten throughout the country.
• Everyday, in the UK alone, more than 2.5 million farm animals are slaughtered for meat.

                                            Task J:
                                           Mind Map
                                         Give reasons
                                         why people do
                                         not eat meat

Christian views towards eating meat
• Christians have the choice to be meat-eaters, vegetarians or vegans.
• They should be sensitive to the beliefs of others about what they wish to eat.
• Most Christians eat meat, as do around 90% of other people in the UK
• Those who decide to be vegans or vegetarians usually do so because they are against killing
animals, they believe that animals should not be harmed.

Task K: Explain what the quotes teach Christians about eating meat

“The one who eats everything
[meat] must not treat with
contempt the one who does not,
and the one who does not eat
everything must not judge the one
who does, for God has accepted
them.”
                       Romans 14:3 27

  animals for food

“Are not five sparrows sold for two
pennies? Yet not one of them is
forgotten by God.”
                          Luke 12:6

Muslim views towards eating meat:
• Muslims are only allowed to eat meat that has been killed according to Shar’iah law.
• For food to be halal (permissible) it must have been farmed and slaughtered according to
  Muslim teaching.
• This involves killing the animals ‘in the name of God’.
• A sharp knife is used to cut the throat, windpipe and the blood vessels in the neck and the
  blood is drained.
• This must not take place in front of other animals.
• The Qur’an expressly forbids the eating of pig meat and it is also haram to eat any animal
which has not been ritually slaughtered or has died in the wild.
• To provide food is an example of a just cause, but hunting for entertainment and pleasure is
  not..
• Most Muslims are meat-eaters but some choose to be vegetarians.

Task L: Explain what the quote teaches Muslims about eating meat (animals)

“Whoever kills a sparrow, or
anything bugger than that without
a just cause, God will hold him
accountable on the Day of
Judgment.”
