Health Safety Precautions (August 2021) Due to the recent increase in Covid-19 cases, CDC & DHEC recommend the wearing of face masks indoors. There are masks and hand sanitizer located in the Narthex. We ask you to respectfully observe social distancing by seating in every other pew, especially if you choose not to wear a mask. Additionally, the clergy will take precautions (mask and gloves) in Administering Holy Commun- ion in one-kind (wafer only). These protocols are expected to remain in place for the foreseeable future. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Rags+ 2
Saint Matthew’s Church The Thirteenth Sunday After Pentecost August 22, 2021 • Eleven O’clock The Holy Eucharist The Organ Prelude The Processional Hymn #11 “Awake, My Soul ” The Acclamation Celebrant: Blessed be God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. People: And blessed be his kingdom now and for ever. Amen. BCP The Collect for Purity…………………………………………..…….124 The Summary of the Law……………………………………..……...124 The Kyrie………………………………………………………..……124 Gloria……….………………...……Hymnal S280 or …..……..…….125 The Collect of the Day (kneeling) Let your continual mercy, O Lord, cleanse and defend your Church; and, because it cannot continue in safety without your help, protect and gov- ern it always by your goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The First Lesson: Joshua 24:1-2a, 14-25..............…ESV…...….. p.198 Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel. And they presented themselves before God. And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, 3
‘Long ago, your fathers lived beyond the Euphrates, Terah, the father of Abraham and of Nahor; and they served other gods. “Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served be- yond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fa- thers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods, for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our fathers up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight and preserved us in all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed. And the Lord drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.” But Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm and consume you, after having done you good.” And the people said to Joshua, “No, but we will serve the Lord.” Then Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the Lord, to serve him.” And they said, “We are witnesses.” He said, “Then put away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your heart to the Lord, the God of Israel.” And the people said to Josh- ua, “The Lord our God we will serve, and his voice we will obey.” So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and put in place statutes and rules for them at Shechem. Psalm 16 (standing, sung) 1 Preserve me, O God, *for in you have I put my trust. 2 O my soul, you have said unto the Lord, * “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.” 3 All my delight is upon the saints who are on the earth, *and upon those who ex- cel in virtue. 4 But those who run after another god *shall have great trouble. 5 Their drink offerings of blood I will not offer, *neither make mention of their names with my lips. 4
6 The Lord himself is the portion of my inheritance and of my cup; * you shall maintain my lot. 7 The boundaries have fallen for me in pleasant places; * indeed, I have a goodly heritage. 8 I will thank the Lord for giving me counsel; * my heart also chastens me in the night season. 9 I have set the Lord always before me; * he is at my right hand, therefore I shall not fall. 10 Therefore, my heart is glad and my soul rejoices. *My flesh also shall rest in hope. 11 For you shall not leave my soul in the grave, *neither shall you allow your Holy One to see corruption. 12 You shall show me the path of life; in your presence is the fullness of joy, * and at your right hand there is pleasure for evermore. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; * as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The Second Lesson: Ephesians 5:15-33 ................…ESV…..…..p.978 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but under- stand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is de- bauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in eve- rything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to him- self in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their 5
own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. The Sequence Hymn #607 “O God of Every Nation” Verse 1 & 2 – All Verse 3 – Choir Verse 4 – All All standing, the Deacon reads the Gospel, first saying: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. The Gospel: John 6:60-69 .…………….….…..ESV……..…..p. 892 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can lis- ten to it?” But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.” After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” 6
