Club Speaker Shirley Wilson was born in Wanganui 1934 of Yorkshire parents. Her father was an ICI chemist. After several years in India he accepted a post in NZ in 1932 at the Wanganui woollen mills. Her mother followed six months later & they were married the day she disembarked. After moves to Australia and Auckland, they were in Milton, south of Dunedin, in 1939. Shirley grew up there during the war years. When Shirley was 14, her mother had another daughter, the only sibling. They moved to Palmerston North in 1949. Shirley went to PN Girls’ High School, then at 15 became an apprentice milliner, finishing her time in Auckland. In 1955 she married Barry Spencer & whilst he built their house they lived in the garage. They had two children. Shirley took up dressmaking to supplement the housekeeping budget, making everyday clothes but specialising in wedding dresses. She worked at Bernina taking stretch sewing classes. After her marriage broke up, Shirley took a fulltime job at Alexander Clark as décor coordinator. She then married Alan Wilson and worked in Guthrie Bowron’s paint shop with him. In 1992 they opened a shop, Decorator Court, on Broadway but it closed four years later. Shirley went back to millinery, making hats for Catwalk. She had great successes at Fashion in the Field, Melbourne Cup & won Easter Bonnet at Ellerslie. Shirley was the first Lotto lady in PN. She still lives on the same plot of land (65yrs) in Totara St. Her passion is her garden. She has been President of the Awapuni Garden Club twice & now looks after the library. She has two children, 7 grandchildren & 3 great-grandchildren. Report continued on Page 3.
