The Parishioner Volume 26 Issue 07 A Publication of St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church July 2021 FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ. It’s July already??? It’s hard to believe, but at the end of June, Jessie and I have been here for 8 months. We are so thankful for each of you, for your love, support, and welcome. As your Pastor, I am grateful for your patience – adjusting to a new Pastor and making it through the added challenges brought about by the pandemic. I want to address something that is on the minds and in the hearts of several members of St. Mark’s: What about the Saturday night service? Let me begin by letting you know that we (Council, Personnel Committee, Worship & Music, & I) have been having a lot of discussion about it. I am going to be honest with you, so you know the things we have been considering and some of the questions that have been asked. I will offer a few thoughts (some of which go beyond just the Saturday service) as I proceed. Is the Saturday evening service necessary at this point? This is the question that stood out at the beginning of our discussions. In conversations with Worship & Music Committee, Personnel Committee, and Church Council, we know that there are some members who have a difficult time getting up and ready for the Sunday morning 9:00 service. We also know that there are people who can come on Sunday, but won’t, simply because they prefer Saturday evening. What is the purpose and nature of the Church? Just recently I was approached by a “Saturday Night” person who has been worshipping on Sunday morning. She said to me, “You know, Pastor, it’s so nice to be here together with so many people. I’ve gotten to know some people I had not met before.” The committees and council have already agreed we would not return to two Sunday morning services unless we “outgrow” the sanctuary. It’s like having two (and, in the case of Saturday evening, three) separate congregations. Given everything we have been through and all the challenges we have faced, it has been a very real and deep joy to be together in the sanctuary, to confess our sins and receive absolution, to sing, to hear the reading and proclamation of God’s Word, to pray, and to gather at the Lord’s Table to receive the Sacrament. On Easter we celebrated First Communion of Caleb and Gianna. On Sunday, 6 June, we celebrated the Sacrament of Holy Baptism of Alivia Gregory (and there will be two more baptisms later this summer). On a date still to be determined, we will celebrate the Rite of Confirmation. Since I assumed ministerial duties here on 25 October, I have seen an increase in attendance (last Sunday there were 147 people here [we did celebrate baptism]!!!). We have welcomed a number of visitors, some of whom have inquired about membership. The current on-the-books membership of St. Mark’s (active & inactive) is over 1000 people!!! Over the past 2 years we have averaged under 200. Where is everyone? What does it mean to be a member of a Church, a member of the Body of Christ? A congregation is strongest and healthiest and is therefore able to minister more effectively to the community when it is unified as “the one body of Christ” where it is called to serve. The Parishioner 1
What about necessary staff? Without going into detail (there are a lot of details and “moving parts”), Rebecca Veith has told us she is willing to resume playing for the Saturday night service. However, she recently underwent some medical tests and was told she will have to have surgery in late June and then begin treatment. She doesn’t know what effect they will have on her. (Please remember her in your prayers.) After further discussions at the June Worship & Music Committee, it was deemed best to wait, possibly until September, to resume the Saturday night service. We will keep in close contact with Rebecca and continue to talk openly with her about her health and availability. As you can tell, there are several issues/factors that we have been and are wrestling with and considering as we try to make decisions that are best for St. Mark’s, our worship, fellowship, ministry, and staff. It is impossible to please everyone. We all know that we can’t do everything that everyone prefers or likes, otherwise there would be chaos, nor could we find the time or the resources. So, as we move forward, please pray for your St. Mark’s family, please be patient, and please, in the meantime, come to worship on Sunday morning. I close with these words from St. Paul to the church in Corinth: 12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. 14Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15If the foot would say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16And if the ear would say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? 18But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20As it is, there are many members, yet one body. 21The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23and those members of the body that we think less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our less respectable members are treated with greater respect; 24whereas our more respectable members do not need this. But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honor to the inferior member, 25that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the same care for one another. 26If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it (1 Corinthians 12.12-26). Notes from Katie’s Kitchen ……. Happy July & Happy Birthday to the USA. Hopefully, you are enjoying these beautiful summer days & soaking up some of that glorious sunshine that we long for in January! Give me the sun & a 72 degree day with a slight breeze & I’m a happy girl! All of the rain that we had in June should make for a bumper crop of cucumbers & lots of hydrangea blooms! I know that the plants that I recently planted or moved are thrilled with the rain & I’m thrilled I don’t have to water daily! God continues to bless Katie’s Kitchen with willing volunteers & nutritious food supplies to feed our friends who visit us weekly. I would like to spotlight several who fly under the radar but are a huge help to me: Each week of the month the list of volunteers changes to some degree. Some volunteers come every week, some bi-weekly & some come once a month. Trying to keep the lists straight & to remind volunteers who are scheduled to help is the job of Karenlynn Rauschenberger and Carol Holt. They graciously make weekly phone calls to check on volunteers to see if they are available for their scheduled weeks. It saves me a great deal of time & energy and makes my job so much easier! I’m so thankful for the effort that they give to this ministry! Please remember Jean Arnold who made phone calls for a long time as she continues to recover from a stroke. Two others that are critically important to what we do are custodians, John & Larry. They are always available to accept my food deliveries & refrigerate or freeze them appropriately, move tables, or clean our floors. They answer all of my questions & are quick to respond to anything I ask! They are a wonderful asset to St Mark’s & I truly appreciate ALL that they do for Katie’s Kitchen! A shout out goes to Bobbi Wick who has been volunteering at KK for some time. Her new schedule will conflict with our serving hours. We appreciate all Bobbi has done to help us & wish her the very best!❤ I have said before & continue to believe that it “takes a village” to do what we do. In this land where we are so blessed with so much, we have a responsibility to help our neighbors who may not have as much as we do. Right now many are still suffering from the effects of this pandemic which we still are not out of. Physically, mentally, or emotionally many are still hurting. Please remember to be KIND. We have no idea what some are going through. The freedoms we share in this country also mean that we have a responsibility to care for those less fortunate. As we celebrate the birth of our great nation, let’s remember the great men who signed the Declaration of Independence wanted freedom for all men! It might have taken us a while to get there— & yes, we are still working through those ideals but, all in all, we are incredibly blessed! God Bless America & all of the good that she stands for, -Justine The Parishioner 4

The Declaration of Independence Wasn’t Actually Signed in July - On July 4, 1776, Congress officially adopted the Declaration of Independence, but it actually wasn’t signed until almost a month later. When the declaration was officially approved on July 4, John Hancock and Charles Thompson (president and secretary of the Continental Congress) signed the draft that day. But the official copy wasn’t signed by all 56 signers until August 2, 1776. 2. George Washington Celebrated the Holiday with Rum - While many of us enjoy a red, white, and blue cocktail on the Fourth of July, George Washington may have been the first to start the tradition. On the second anniversary of the first Fourth of July, America was still fighting for independence in the Revolutionary War. George Washington ordered a double ration of rum for his soldiers (along with an artillery salute) to celebrate the holiday on July 4, 1778. 3. Three Presidents Have Died on July 4 - While only one president has been born on Independence Day, three have died on the holiday. Presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson actually died on the same day, on July 4, 1826, the fiftieth anniversary of the Fourth of July. Later, President James Monroe died on July 4, 1831. 4. Apple Pie Is Considered the Most American Dessert - When the colonists first came to America, they were looking for ways to distance themselves from Britain. They ditched their traditional scones and cakes and learned how to make a flaky pastry crust from Dutch immigrants who had also come to America. Since apples were easy to come by, they filled the pastries with apple slices and the tradition of apple pie (and independence) was born. JULY “WEATHERLORE” July is a month with some good weather lore. First, July 3rd marks the beginning of the “Dog Days of Summer,” the period between July 3rd and August 11th when the Sun occupies the same region of the sky as Sirius, the Dog Star. It was once believed that due to the star’s position at this time of year that it somehow conspired with the Sun to make the days hotter. July Weather Lore Dates: July 15 — St. Swithin Day — if on St. Swithin’s Day ye do rain, for forty days it will remain. July 25 — Puffy white clouds on this day foretells much snow in the coming winter. July 26 — St. Anne’s day — Rain on St. Anne’s will continue for a month and a week. “When the moon is in the north, The skillful fisher goes not forth; When the wind is in the east, ‘Tis good for neither man nor beast; When the wind is in the south, It blows the flies in the fish’s Mouth; But when the wind is in the west, There it is the very best.” Source: https://www.farmersalmanac.com/july-lore-12293 July Quiz CHECK OUT St. Mark’s member 1.
