neighbourly.co.nz AUGUST 30, 2017, NAPIER MAIL 7 Options for new Napier pool revealed SIMON HENDERY Three options for Napier’s proposed new Aquatic Centre have been released. Napier City Council is propos- ing spending between $19.5 million and $37 million on the options. It will also consult the public on two alternative options – a more expensive Olympic-size 50m pool or a cheaper extension of the existing facilities. Option one, the Ivan Wilson Expansion, was the most cost- effective of the options. It would see the current Napier Aquatic Centre close temporarily while wide-scale renovations took place. The result would be a $19.5m extension of existing facilities – a new 25m x 25m pool, a 12.5m x 8m years. 18 NAPIER MAIL, AUGUST 30, 2017 neighbourly.co.nz WHAT’s ON Guided See what’s happening in your city walks on Marine Parade Napier’s Marine Parade has been the setting of earthquakes, aquariums, legends, murals and just off its stony shore a secretive U-boat mission! These stories are set to be shared duringTe Wiki O Te Reo Maori (Maori Language Week). Jake Brookie and Brenda Gunn from the National Aquarium of New Zealand are hosting free guided walks – for locals - of Marine Parade, with a focus on what connects the National Aquarium to the sea, early next month. Napier’s waterfront has been the site of many and 18+ varied activities and attractions. “Many landmarks of Napier were made around the pre-earthquake estuary. Even the wooden beacons near Hawke’s Bay Airport were used to guide ships into the much larger, pre-earthquake estuary,” says Jake. Participants will also be encouraged to learn how to introduce themselves in Te Reo. “Te Reo is a truly living language. Place names around Ahuriri have a direct link to our history, something I am eager to share,” Jake says. “Napier has a wonderful connection to the sea and this connection goes back centuries,” adds Brenda. The walks will be part of a National Aquarium experience offered to tour groups visiting Napier this summer. “We have had a great response from international tourists when we have mentioned 26 Sept to this new tour and we are really excited to add it to our customer offerings,” says Rob Yarrall, Manager 8 Oct 2017 National Aquarium. hbaf.co.nz Places on the 45-minute long walks, at 10am on 9, 10 & 11 September, are limited to 15 and booking is essential.
