4 THE SATURDAY EXPRESS, JUNE 23, 2018 neighbourly.co.nz Photographer shoots for the stars MATT BROWN The star cluster Matariki, also known as the Pleiades, the seven sisters and Subaru signals the beginning of the Māori new year. As a part of Picton’s first ever Matariki festival, wildlife and night sky photographer Tamzin Henderson is running a pho- tography class teaching the tech- nique of long-exposure shots. ‘‘It’s what I do for fun. I like to push boundaries,’’ Henderson said. A photographer for four years, Henderson recently returned to Marlborough to take over the family business with her sister, Lana. The business, Henderson’s, is a boat chandlery and fishing supplies shop. It should come as no surprise, then, that her passion is the ocean. Specialising in wildlife pho- tography, she recently travelled halfway to Antarctica in her search of the perfect shot. After seeing a fishing boat on TV3’s Ocean Bounty, Henderson decided she wanted to go along for the trip. ‘‘I basically Facebook stalked them,’’ she said. ‘‘I asked if they would take a photographer along Nature photographer Tamzin Henderson is running a class in long-exposure night photography as a Matariki event in Picton. Marlborough Girls College’s senior choir Ovation and Nayland College’s boys choir Augmented were both highly commended for their performances over the weekend. Ovation won first place in the ‘art music’ category, Augmented won first place in the ‘NZ song’ category and and they both came first in the ‘other styles’ category. Marlborough Girls’ junior choir Crescentia also placed second in the ‘NZ song’ category. Both the Motueka High School Suono Bellissimo choir and Motueka Singers choir were commended, as well as Nayland’s mixed choir Naycol Chorale and Marlborough Boys College’s No Girls Aloud choir. The Big Sing National Festival is a national group-singing competition for secondary school students. More than 10,000 young people from over 250 schools nationwide are taking part in regional festivals this year. Nayland College principal Daniel Wil- son said it had been the school’s third year of taking part in the competition and they had been ‘‘the standout school of the event’’. ‘‘It was exceptional, the changes I’ve seen over the last three years with the choirs when they first performed have been exponential. ‘‘The students were extremely focused ... the performance was just outstanding.’’ Nayland College head of music Nigel Weeks said the choirs had worked ‘‘exceptionally hard’’ towards the event. ‘‘It is a credit to the amazing students and staff we have at the school that they were able to perform at such an outstand- Call in and see us today at our new Mazda showroom ing level.
