Monster pumpkins help raise funds for playground KIRUP Primary School recently raised more than $1,700 by bringing back a legendary event from the not-so-distant past. The Giant Pumpkin weigh-in was a regular event in Kirup with the most recent winner being Mick Zwart, who still had some of the seeds from that competition. With help, careful supervision and expertise from Brett Thomas of the Mullalyup Forrest Farm Nursery, more than 60 seedlings were carefully sprouted and, in October 2020, through the P&C Council, they were sold to families and friends of Kirup Primary School to raise funds PHOTO: Kirup Primary School students think humungus pumpkins rock. for the new Nature Play Playground. Balingup Townscape Committee digs in to upgrade community facility WHEN the Balingup Progress Association (BPA) purchased the Balingup Community Centre building from CALM and then transported it from Grimwade to its current location, a toilet block was built out the back. That was in the early 1990s and, while improvements have been made over time, including the addition of a shower and disability access, the facility was finding it difficult to cope with crowds from the Medieval Carnivale, concerts and other events. When the Donnybrook-Balingup Shire Council obtained a grant for the new block it was agreed that the Balingup Townscape Committee (a sub- committee of the BPA) would undertake the work and PHOTO: Fred Mills and Mark Giles work on the changeover organise the tradies. to new leach drains at the Community Centre toilet block. The Townscape Committee is pleased with the new arrangement. "The new agreement with the Council regarding how the Balingup Townscape Committee works and is funded each year has been going very well," Committee chair, Helen Christensen said. "We are more than happy with the support we have received from the CEO and from staff, Steve Potter, Damien Morgan and Shawn Lombard, and we look forward to working with them into the future. "As a long-time member of the committee, I'm very proud of the achievements and improvements we have made around the town and I would like to thank all community members for their contributions over the years." The work of the committee benefits from many hours of volunteer work, though this has slowed during the winter months with work on the weir, for example, having to wait until the spring/summer. Ample rains have relieved Geoff McMullen of his weekly watering duties but John Bailey continues his work on hanging baskets and the planter boxes around the town. The committee has finalised its plan for the footpaths and submitted it to the Shire for consideration in the 2021/22 budget. Preston Press, Issue 211 - August 2021 9
