A Note FROM THE PRESIDENT Happy Spring to all Mimosa Hills members. I’m not sure about everyone else, but I’m ready for shorts and flip flop weather and to get to work on my golf game. I’m hoping that by my next newsletter article, we will have more sunshine and less rain. I would like to thank everyone that attended the annual stock holders meeting. The Boards’ goal for that meeting was to be as transparent as possible and we feel we accomplished that. We wanted to be upfront and honest about the financial shape the club is in and the challenges we face for the new year. As we now look to 2020, we plan to implement new ideas to help make sure Mimosa Hills is here for years to come. We successfully rolled out a new membership initiative in February. We recognize that current members are our biggest recruitment tool. We hope you all help in the recruitment of new members and our incentive program is our thank you for promoting Mimosa Hills. We hope to get continued feedback throughout the year on our promotions, incentives, and special mem- ber offers as we move through these challenging financial times. Furthermore, if you have suggestions, myself, as well as the rest of the board, is open to hearing them. I would like to welcome new board members James Robertson, Brandon Gallion, and Tom Wohlgemuth. These guys have already made a huge impact to the board and club. We are looking forward to a positive and successful year. -Randy Walker
From Your GOLF PROFESSIONAL The transition to our new handicap system has seemed to have gone smoothly considering the overwhelming changes in plat- form. Our system now is fully functional, including the ability to post scores hole by hole rather than just total score. This is, however, not a requirement by the USGA or by Mimosa Hills. Advantages to posting by hole include allowing a golfer to track trends in scores on certain holes and having the system automatically compute your maximum score you can take on certain holes. If you chose to use the hole by hole platform, simply put in the gross score you made on the hole. For example, if you make a 10 on hole number 1, the system will automatically adjust the score back to the maximum for you. A scratch golfers score would adjust back to a double bogey. Keep in mind that your handicap updates daily, not monthly, therefore your maximum on certain holes can change from day to day. I would encourage you to come out Thursday, March 26th to participate in our Rules of Golf trivia night. We will use the Kahoot system to administer the game. Bring your smart device and enjoy a fun night of golf trivia along with some helpful hints to help you adjust to the many changes in the rules and handicap system. -Jimmy Piercy Solid Tine Venting March 24th Tee times will be delayed until 10:30 am to accommodate the maintenance process. From Your GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT As mentioned in the last newsletter, the aerification program of the greens will be similar to last year’s. We have only one deep pencil sized solid tine venting scheduled for Tuesday, March 24. Last year we did one in March and April. After a double roll, the disruption to putting is minimal. Around the same time we will do a light verti-cut and topdress of the greens. We will pick a day in April to do the same. This process only makes the greens smoother. No core removal or heavy sand topdressing will occur until May 4-5. And like last year, the ‘Dryject’ sand injection process will be done as well but instead of Thursday aerification week will occur on Monday, May 11. The idea of a double aerify is to attack the thatch twice in May when the healing process is rapid unlike March where cold temperatures slow the healing considerably. The spring/summer pre-emergent weed control was completed in February. The main target weeds are crabgrass and goosegrass but the product covers many others. The rule of thumb is that crabgrass germinates when the red bud, cherry and pear trees are blooming and the goosegrass with the dogwoods and azaleas. Ac- cording to NC State, everyone should count on getting done two weeks prior to other years due to above aver- age temperatures. So far, December – February has been about 8 degrees above normal averages. The month of March is the time we aerify all of the bermudagrass tees, fairways and roughs. Hopefully the golf course will dry out after a wet January / February. Weather permitting on a given day, we pull the cores, drag the cores, verti-cut the tees and fairways and blow off the debris. This is very time consuming so typical- ly we attack about 4 holes per day. Those holes will likely be closed until mid afternoon. If you wish, check with the pro shop in the morning for updated work schedules. April is a busy golfing month and our goal is to have the golf course in the best condition as possible. The ber- mudagrass should be greening up nicely and the greens are in great shape. Thank you to all who are supporting the Mimosa Hills Preservation Donors Club. Weather permitting, the irri- gation and drainage on hole #15 will take place by an outside contractor in March. Then in early summer we will prep and lay bermudagrass sod in bare areas on both sides of the cart path. If funds remain we can patch bare areas between holes #14 and #15. So please join in and help our golf course improvement projects. Over the years the efforts have been astounding! The City of Morganton’s tree crew is removing any trees or bushes that are encroaching on the cable, phone and power lines along the golf course property. The overgrown Leyland Cypress is the main target. As many of you are aware over the years they became unmanageable from a pruning, disease and insect damage stand- point. We are reviewing the planning of more Arborvitae and placement of boulders in key locations. The Ar- borvitae will be planted away from the power lines, spaced appropriately and pruned only for several years eventually let go to a the matured height. This plant is more disease and insect resistance and not as much of a proliferate grower as the Leyland. Our CGA agronomist visit will be free again this year due to us hosting the Mimosa Hills Junior event in Au- gust. Each year we invite Bill Anderson from the CGA to evaluate our programs, budget, equipment, new trends etc. Prior to Mr. Anderson’s role as CGA Agronomist he was a Golf Course Superintendent at Carmel Country Club in Charlotte, NC for 41 years. He is a graduate of the turfgrass program from Michigan State University. He visits golf courses throughout North and South Carolina with varying designs, environments, budgets, grasses, resources and problems and challenges that exist. A detailed report is sent to us after the visit of which gets included in the newsletter for all members to read. Board members, the general manager and the head golf pro are encouraged to attend so that any questions can be addressed during the visit. If you want any question addressed please contact myself, a board member, Roger Moon or Jimmy Piercy. The date has not been set as of this article writing. -Dan Winters
