THE MESSENGER CARLSRUHE – SADDLEWORTH LUTHERAN PARISH St John’s Carlsruhe Pastor Leon Rosenberg 42 Belvidere Road St Matthew’s Riverton SADDLEWORTH SA 5413 Trinity Ph/Fax 8847 Black 4429 Springs Zion Saddleworth Mob 0402 439 334 Email leonrosenberg55@gmail.com March/April 2019 28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. 31 They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.) 34 While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” 36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen. (Luke 9:28-36) For the depths of growth. Have you ever wondered why Jesus showed ‘his glory’ to those three disciples? Could it be that they were about to enter a very difficult time as they accompanied Jesus to Jerusalem, putting it the words of this Gospel reading (for The Transfiguration) “his
departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem” or as we usually put it, Jesus’ suffering and death. They needed to experience the height of Jesus’ glory so they could appreciate the depth of his shame. They needed to be strengthened to enter this time of their own testing alongside Jesus. God needed to get their attention, so they could be assured that what Jesus was about to go through was indeed part of His plan. Transfiguration is not only the climax of the season of Epiphany – the season of light: God revealing who Jesus really is, it is also preparing up for that dark season of Lent: where out of love for us, Jesus went through the shame of suffering and death. Lent is also a time of our testing and our growth. (This year as are using the Seven Deadly Sins/The Seven Virtues for this). It is all part of God’s plan. It is a good reminder that God’s plan for our life is not always to be seeing glory- going through good times but He may be giving us good times to prepare us for the depths of growth that comes in the darker times of life. Pastor Leon What is pastor doing this year? As I have said in the past I love to operate in ‘seasons’. This year they roughly align with the months. January, as I stated in the first Bulletin of the year was when I did a lot of administration: set the 2018 records in order, write my 2018 AGM report and prepare ‘The Journey 2019’ as well as being open to receive invitations ‘to pop in’. In February I visited at least 20 homes with the question, “What can the Church do to help you?” It was an enlightening exercise from which I could share at the congregational AGMs. March/April is for the most part Lent and Easter with midweek Lenten service as well as the Sunday worship to prepare. I plan to use more regularly the congregational offices (at the back of Riverton church and Carlsruhe church) to be more assessable, as well as the Adelaide office (on Thursdays). Pastor Leon
What came out of our Parish AGM? Wow! Riverton Lutheran Church looked full for this year’s Parish AGM on the 10th February- just as it did when I was installed about 4 years ago! With nearly 50% more in attendance than last year! It was a calm meeting ….. but what came out of it? We are presenting a proposal back to Balaklava Parish that our leadership came up with, of sharing 20% of our pastor with that parish (which equates to about a Sunday a month for worship and a half a day a week). This had come from their request for pastoral assistance which we have been considering for the last 6 months. And in the course of our discussion, a number of interesting views were presented. These are a few that caught my attention: Whether they accept the proposal or not, we should get to know Balaklava Parish better and to this end have a few fellowship events with them in the coming year. A shared arrangement with Balaklava Parish could be a means to revitalizing our youth scene because Balaklava community has a strong ecumenical youth group. What can we be doing personally to encourage those people who used to worship regularly to do so again? We wouldn’t have such a need to have to respond to Balaklava’s request if those people were worshipping regularly. Why don’t we see any need for a lay-worker working, alongside our pastor in our parish? Are our goals/vision/ appreciation of the needs of our community too low? Meetings such as our Parish AGM can be ways in which God opens our eyes- the possibilities of what could be doing. May He open your hearts as well, so that you have the desire and confidence to do these things that God is showing us. Pastor Leon
LENT 2019: The Seven Deadly Sins/The Seven Virtues. Lent is a good opportunity to examine ourselves, so as to allow God, by His Holy Spirit to lead us to repentance and to replace any wrong attitudes we have with a more God- pleasing ones, motivated by Christ’s suffering and death for us. A couple of years ago we used The Ten Commandments as ‘God’s Good Gifts’ for this purpose. It was very familiar to many of us because we were taught at Confirmation to use The Ten Commandments to examine ourselves in preparation for Holy Communion. Last Lent we used The Fruit of the Spirit (of Galatians 5:22, 23) to do the same thing. In both of these Lenten seasons, I had developed a wooden disk (a ‘Handy Prayer Help’ H.P.H.) to assists us in the process and as a reminder to do this. This year I have developed another disk. It is based on the Seven Deadly Sins. I have used the standard list (there are others) of “The Seven Deadly Sins” of pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, sloth. The Seven Deadly Sins originated with the ‘desert-fathers’. They thought of them as evil thoughts or spirits. They became an established teaching of the Church and in 590AD Pope Gregory 1 came up with this standard list. I have wood burnt these Seven Deadly Sins on one side and burnt the Seven Virtues- which are the positive side to those poor attitudes of the Seven Deadly Sins, on the other. The Seven Deadly Sins The Seven Virtues Pride Humility Greed Liberality Lust Chastity Envy Kindness Gluttony Abstinence Wrath Patience Sloth Diligence I used planks from pallets to prepare these but have also used 5ply and 7ply for all who would like the H.P.H. in that format. They will be available from me during Lent. During Lent I plan to base our mid-week Lenten service (Wednesday evening’s devotions) on each of the Seven Deadly Sins and the Sundays in Lent on each of the Seven Virtues and continue this into the Easter weekend in accordance with the schedule below.
1. Ash Wednesday 6th March Pride at Saddleworth th 2. Wed 13 Sloth at Riverton th 3. Wed 20 Wrath at Carlsruhe th 4. Wed 27 Gluttony and Greed at Saddleworth rd 5. Wed 3 April Lust at Riverton th 6. Wed 10 April Envy at Carlsruhe As you can imagine the Wednesday addresses will have many allusions to Jesus’ passion, as we do during such a series. 1st Sunday in Lent (10th March) Humility 2nd Sunday in Lent (17th March) Diligence 3rd Sunday in Lent (24th March) Patience 4th Sunday in Lent (31st March) Abstinence and Liberality 5th Sunday in Lent (7th April) Chastity Palm Sunday (14th April) Humility (2) Maundy Thursday (18th April) Kindness at Riverton Good Friday (19th April) Love at Carlsruhe and Saddleworth Easter (21st April) Joy Of course, every address will be based on God’s Word and not just the tradition of the Church. I pray that this Lent will be a time of self-examination, enlightenment and renewal for you. Have a blessed Lent.
