Building strength, stability, & self-reliance through shelter. HabitatCSC.org THE HABITAT TIMES Homeowner Newsletter WINTER 2019 Homeowner Spotlight: Andra Andra has two sons, now ages 46 and 30 years old. Before her family partnered with Habitat for Humanity in 1993, she and her young boys were staying in a room together in her mother’s house. Andra was a pillar for her mother when her father passed away, but to her mother’s mixed emotions, she wanted to pursue a home of she and her sons’ own. She remembers vividly the day she closed on the house and moved in. Her son Michael, then nine years old, ran around, playing in his new yard. They had a band, food, and a festive celebration on that special day. Raising her boys as a single mother, Andra always put her children first. Though she talks with pure joy, their journey has not been without large challenges. Soon after they moved into their new home, Andra developed health issues and, no longer was able to work. Andra emphasized how hard it was to pay her bills and mortgage on such a tight income. However, through hard work and dedication, she was able to reach the finish line OTHER STORIES INSIDE and in 2017 she paid off her mortgage. THIS ISSUE: A few years ago, when Andra’s health took another difficult decline, the doctors told her son to make her final arrangements for her. From there, she perked up, proved them wrong, and Homeowner Highlight........1 came back home with spunk, wit, and appreciation for her life. News & Events...................2 Her son, Darius, goes to Helping Hands during the day. He has Home Repair Highlights............3 autism and is under the care of Andra. His artwork is collected Restore..............................4 and saved, a special highlight of their home. Her son, Michael, was an honor roll student and wrestling state champion in high school. He graduated from the University of South Carolina as an art major, and is currently working as a physical trainer at a gym in Columbia. She is so proud of them both. They are a close family, each looking out for one another. Andra’s dreams for her boys are for them to be happy, healthy, and together; also, for them to recognize these things with gratitude. Having a Habitat home has opened doors for their family and provided security they may not otherwise have had.
